How Does Karma's Follow Auto Shot Path Work?

by GoPro on ‎05-13-2020 07:47 PM
Karma uses GPS to automatically frame and follow your controller. You can choose one of two Follow Modes, Mimic or Leash, to best match your activity.

Follow Menu

How does it work

Karma puts you in frame first, and as soon as you are within the Follow parameters, you can tap "Play" to start Follow. If the play button is greyed out, it means you would need to move the drone until your are within the parameters.

Follow Parameters
  • Min. Follow Distance = 10m (33ft)
  • Min. Follow Altitude = 10m (33ft)
  • Max. Follow Distance = 100m (328ft)
  • Max. Follow Speed = 33mph (55kmh)

Follow Modes

Mimic

Mimic is the default follow mode. This mode will allow the drone to follow the Karma Controller at a fixed perspective. This mode is great for walking along a stunning beach, while the Karma drone faces and follows you with the sunset in the background.

Leash

Leash mode will allow the drone to follow behind the Karma Controller at a distance. Think of it like a balloon on a string. This mode is great for running on a winding path, while Karma trails behind you as you make every turn in your path.

Additional Controls with Follow
  • Pilots can switch between Follow modes, Mimic and Leash, mid flight.
  • Pilots can adjust the camera tilt.
  • Pilots can make slight yaw movements (turn left/right or move up/down)
  • Karma will orbit around the pilot if the right joystick is pushed left or right.
  • It is very important to ensure there are no obstacles in Karma's flight path. Karma will not automatically avoid obstacles when in Follow mode.

Follow FAQ

Does the Karma Controller need to stay open while in Follow mode?
  • The Karma Controller needs to stay open in order for Follow to work. Follow relies on the GPS signal of Karma and the Karma Controller. If closed while in Follow mode, the controller will give an audible warning that "Following has stopped." Karma will hover in place. When the lid reopens, the controller will give an audible message "Auto Shot Path cancelled."
Can I choose a preset length for the leash mode?
  • For both Leash and Mimic, the length to start is set at the distance where Follow mode was activated.
Can Follow work at any distance?
  • Before Follow will start, Karma must be at a minimum distance of 10 meters from the controller and at a minimum altitude of 10 meters. The maximum distance allowed is 100 meters before Follow will stop.
What happens if the pilot is going too fast for Karma to follow?
  • Follow will work at a max distance of 100 meters and has a max speed of 33 mph. If the pilot is moving faster than Karma, the distance between the controller and Karma will gradually increase. Once the distance between Karma and the controller exceeds 120 meters, Karma will stop following, hover in place, and eventually initiate Return to User.
Can I still control Karma while it's in Follow Mode?
  • The pilot will have "nudge" control while Karma is in Follow Mode. Adjusting the camera tilt and slight yaw and pitch movements are allowed.
Is Follow good to use for all activities?
  • Follow is great for casual use cases where the pilot is not moving faster than the drone.
