Getting Started with GoPro Webcam for Mac



 

Step 1: Update your HERO10 Black, HERO9 Black, or HERO8 Black (these are the only compatible cameras) to the most current firmware. 

  1. Update your camera via GoPro Quik or by manual update.

Step 2: Install and launch the GoPro Webcam app

  1. Download GoPro Webcam desktop utility and install the software on your computer. (Mac OS v10.14 or newer required)

  2. In the Status bar, you'll see a GoPro icon.

Step 3: Connect your camera

  1.  Power on your camera and connect it to your computer via USB cable.

    • Using a USB 3.0 port on your computer provides the best results to ensure battery life.

  2. In the status bar, the GoPro icon will display a blue dot to indicate a successful connection and your camera will be in USB Mode.

Preview Webcam

1. Click on the GoPro icon in the status bar and select [Show Preview]. This gives you the ability to understand your Wide field of view prior to going live.

2. You will now see the camera preview. You can switch  between [mirror] and [flip].

Camera Orientation

If you rotate your camera to a portrait orientation, the streamed image will rotate automatically. 

 


Using the GoPro Webcam in your program

1. Open your webcam application and select GoPro Camera as your preferred camera (see below for supported programs). If the app is already open, you might need to quit and restart that application for the GoPro Camera option to be visible.

2. The camera will go into GoPro Webcam mode as shown below.

3. In the status bar, the GoPro icon displays a red dot to indicate that the camera is recording.

Adjust resolution

1. To change your resolution, click on the [GoPro Camera Icon] in the top left of the status bar and select [Preferences].

2. Here you can choose between [1080p] (default) or [720p].

Adjusting the Digital Lens to affect the Field of View (FOV)

Once your camera is connected and broadcasting (showing the red dot), you can select a different [Digital Lens] to change your FOV. This change takes a couple of moments.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm having trouble connecting the GoPro. What steps can I take to fix this?
  1. Close the platform/app you are using.
  2. Unplug the camera from the computer.
  3. Turn your GoPro off and then back on again.
  4. Reconnect the GoPro to your computer. If possible, try using a different USB port on your computer.
  5. Open the GoPro Webcam Utility.
  6. Reopen your platform/app.
  7. If you still don't have success, restart your computer. You can also try a different USB cable.
My camera isn't being recognized.
  1. Unplug your camera from the computer.
  2. Ensure that you have the correct setting applied in [Preferences] > [Connections] > [USB Connection].
    • Select [MTP] if you want to use file transfer.
    • Select [GoPro Connect] to use GoPro Webcam.
Can I use a different GoPro model as a webcam?
  • Using a GoPro as a webcam is only offered through the HERO10 Black, HERO9 Black and HERO8 Black at this time.
Can I connect my camera wirelessly?
  • Wireless connections are not supported for the webcam function at this time. You will need to use a USB cable to connect the camera to your computer.
Can I change my camera orientation (portrait vs. landscape) and still have the image appear right-side up? 
  • The GoPro must be in an upright, horizontal position.

  1. Download the GoPro Webcam desktop utility and install the software on your computer. (Only Windows 10 is supported).

Step 3: Connect your camera

  1.  Power on your camera and connect it to your computer using a USB cable. The camera will go into USB mode.

To preview your webcam setup, right-click on the GoPro icon in the status bar and select [Show Preview]. This gives you the ability to understand your Wide field of view prior to going live.

2. Hover over [Lens Mode] and your Lens options will show. When you select your desired FOV, the change takes a couple of moments.

Heads Up... For Chrome support, click the Chrome’s menu button (top-right corner), then select [Settings] > [Privacy and Security] > [Site Settings] > [Camera].

Known Issues
  • OBS video sources will show a black screen when selecting the [High] preset. All other presets work correctly.
  • Safari does not support virtual Webcams. (Please use Google Chrome.)
  • Some client webcam applications will not show the GoPro Webcam as a source (or any other virtual webcam, such as Snapcam or ManyCam). Apps that have a web version typically work in Chrome.

  • Fixed issue generating a connectivity issue when upgrading the application with the camera connected.
  • Fixed minimal Windows requirement to 20H2.
  • Fixed localization for multiple countries.
  • Improved camera detection speed on local network.
  • Improved firewall detection preventing the application to communicate with the camera.
Known Issues:
  • Some users report unexpected camera behavior causing issue during sessions. If you experience this problem, please remove and reinsert the battery of the camera.
