GoPro GPS not working? - Performance stickers and telemetry FAQ
[ Edited ]

This video summarizes some of these tips (disclaimer: the video promotes the Telemetry Overlay software)
https://youtu.be/4R4X_Vs3LFA

My GoPro video shows no GPS path (performance stickers). Why?

First, let's make sure you are recording a GPS signal. GPS is only recorded in your videos if you get a GPS signal BEFORE hitting record. You know you have a signal when the GPS icon (a map pin) is white. You will usually only get a reliable signal when the camera is outdoors with an unobstructed view of a clear sky. GoPros rely only on satellites to get a location (as opposed to mobile phones, which use cellular antennas too), so any obstacle around you might hinder the GPS signal and prevent Quik from showing the telemetry overlays. The location of your camera plays a big role too. Over your helmet is better than under your chin, outside the car is better than inside it, and so on. The GPS antenna is next to the record button, so don't mount the camera upside down, if you can.

How can I check that my GPS data was recorded if Quik does not recognize it?
You can see all the telemetry your camera records with the Telemetry Extractor.

I had a signal before hitting record, but I still don't have GPS gauges. Why?
GoPro's Quik video editor is not compatible with the GPS data format of the new cameras (Hero 9, Hero 8 and GoPro Max, keep reading for solutions). On both Quik and the mobile GoPro App gauges/stickers are only enabled if they consider the GPS signal to be good enough. To get a better signal, follow the tips on the first question. Some locations and times work better than others (see below). Also, the longer you wait to hit record, even after the GPS icon is on, the better the signal will be, usually.

Is there no way to activate gauges / performance stickers in Quik for videos that do contain GPS data?
Yes. You can use the GoPro GPS Quick Fix, with both old and new cameras.

How do I know if a location and time are good for recording a GPS signal?
You can use popular drone apps like UAV Forecast (available in the Apple app store and Google Play) to get an estimate of the number of satellite locks you are likely to get at any location and time of day. An estimate of nine satellite locks or better will give the best results. Unseen environmental factors can interfere with the camera's ability to capture GPS. Examples include Solar Weather (Kp Index), multipath propagation, radio wave interference, and high level cloud cover.

Should I use the QuickCapture feature (power on and record automatically)?
No. The camera needs time to acquire satellite lock before the recording begins. If the camera does not have at least four satellites locked and giving good location data before recording begins, GPS data will not be captured. Even if the camera does acquire adequate satellite data during the recording, if it does not do so BEFORE the recording begins, it will not be captured.

My camera always gets bad signal, even in wide open spaces
Some models appear to be more reliable than others (for example, Fusion seems to get very accurate locations whereas Hero 7 can be hit and miss). Some specific units also seem to produce better results than others. If you suspect that your camera GPS might be faulty contact the GoPro Support Team.

The mobile GoPro App (Android/iOS) shows gauges but Quik desktop (Windows/macOS) doesn't!
New cameras (Hero9, Hero8, Max) are not supported in GoPro Quik. You can use the GoPro GPS Quick Fix, to make your videos compatible with Quik, or use alternative software options.

Which cameras contain telemetry?
All cameras since the Hero 5 contain telemetry.
Hero 5 Session, Hero 2018 (to be confirmed) and Hero 7 White contain basic data (gyroscope, accelerometer).
Hero 5 Black, Hero 6 Black, Fusion, Hero 7 Silver, Hero 7 Black, Hero 8 Black, Hero 9 Black and Max also contain GPS. The newer the camera, the more metadata streams (sensors) it contains.
The Hero 4 Black can theoretically record metadata into the videos if attached to a Bluetooth metadata device. All the other mentioned cameras should be able to take in external Bluetooth telemetry too, although there is no documentation on how to achieve that.

What other data streams exist?
New cameras include multiple streams, such as: Exposure time, White balance (Kelvin and RGB), Sensor ISO, Average luminance, Image uniformity, Scene classification, Face coordinates and details (smiles), Predominant hue, Camera orientation, Image orientation, Gravity vector, Wind processing, Microphone is wet, AGC Audio level, Disparity matrix... In some cases tools to use these data easily do not exist yet, but you can convert the data to other formats (CSV, JSON...)

Do edited or processed videos have metadata?
Generally, no. Some of the GoPro processing software (Fusion Studio) does retain some of the metadata, but it's not something you can rely on.

My performance stickers are showing mph but I need km/h (or vice-versa)

On Android or iOS, try changing the language or regional settings of your phone to a country/language where the desired units (metric or imperial) apply. On Windows or macOS, the settings tab of Quik lets you change units. Other programs offer more flexibility with units and customization.

My gauges are out of sync

Quik versions after 2.6.0 can produce gauges that are out of sync, often by many seconds. Unfortunately, 2.6.0 is not compatible for cameras after the HERO6. So if you have a HERO5 or 6, you can look for the 2.6.0 version of Quik and use that for your performance stickers. For newer cameras, you can make your video files compatible with 2.6.0 with the GPS Quick Fix app. Third part software options allow you to adjust sync.

I can create a video with performance stickers on mobile, but if I edit it or add music to it, I lose the stickers

For now if you save a media with a sticker to the App and then select it to make a multi-clip edit, it will not have the sticker. You have to first SAVE TO PHONE, then import it from there for the sticker to be displayed.

Do 360º videos (Fusion, Max) contain telemetry?

Yes, they all do, but in some cases the processing/stitching software might interfere with your ability to use them. With third party software options you can add telemetry overlays to stitched/reframed 360 videos, by reading the data from the original file.

I want to use the metadata in different ways
Here's a list of resources that will allow you to use the data in other apps (After Effects, Virb Edit, Google Earth...), do racing related stuff with them, or even code your own custom software: GoPro telemetry resources.

I need inspiration. What have people done with telemetry so far?
Here's a playlist with some examples, but there are many more things you can come up with! GoPro telemetry, metadata and sensors.

I have more questions
Ask below 😀.

You got the dreaded "No GPS data" error. Is that true? Not necessarily!Test your video files with Telemetry Extractor: https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/fr...

Very helpful would be, that the App gives an alert or hint, when the GPS does not work properly.

We use the Gopro for business reasons. The camera is fixed outside of a car and we capture infrastructure data.

The movies will be linked inside a GIS-application. Important is, that the GPS-path can be related to the GIS-mapping data.

Strange enough: I used the GOPRO TELEMETRY EXTRACTOR - AND the GPS-data are collected --- but not showed up in Quik.

The only remedy is, to export this data into After effects and use it as a layer on top of the movie............

best

@rolandc4675 Ye, it would be useful to have the app inform you about the quality of the GPS data, and even let you decide whether you want to use it or not... despite the quality.

Would your company be interested in a feature in the Telemetry Extractor that exported every frame of a video with EXIF location data in it?

made another test today with two movies: one is fine with correct path, the other shows only a part of the route-section....

had never before such instable results. made several hundert movies before, all fine with quite fine GPS.

could this be with the last upgrade for the camera?

@rolandc4675 No. That feature is something I could create if there was enough interest in it.

Regarding the data quality, you can check what happens if you load the data in the Telemetry Extractor and set GPS Precision to 10000 and GPS Fix to "Any". You will then see how bad is the data that got filtered out. I don't think this is related to firmware updates, but I can't be sure.

I've managed to get GPX files for DashWare, but it doesn't contain the g's

Any way to get this to work?

Re: GoPro GPS not working? - Performance stickers and telemetry FAQ

Hello everybody,

not sure if I am in the right thread, however, thought I'd give it a try.

I am a newbie with respect to the GoPro. Since I wanted to get access to the GPS data of my videos I came across that fantastic GoPro Telemetry Extractor tool (Free Version). While it initially worked quite well I came now across some videos where it doesn't work. I can rule out that GPS data is not present because I see correct data (speed, elevation) in GoPro Quik. I also see data in the Virb Edit GPX export, however, Virb Edit doesn't show the data at all / incorrectly. Is there a limitation with the free tool, is there a bug or is it rather a user error?

Thank you for any feedback in advance.

Re: GoPro GPS not working? - Performance stickers and telemetry FAQ

Hi Sebastian,

The free tool does not have that kind of limitation.

If I understand correctly, you can load your video file but the exported GPX file is not working inside Virb Edit. Is that it?

You can send me the original file for me to analyse to app@prototyping.barcelona, if it is too big and you happen to have a .LRV file next to it in your SD card, send me the LRV file. Otherwise you could send me the exported GPX and I might be able to make some deductions from it.

The GPS stopped working in Quik after 2/9/20 on my 5 Black, just got the 8 Black use it today and the GPS dosen't work in Quik. This problem is in your software that needs to be fixed!!!

Re: GoPro GPS not working? - Performance stickers and telemetry FAQ

more than 6 months after Gopro8 release...still can't get the telemetry properly viewed in Quik for windows...that is soooooooooooooo frustrating.

I can understand a small delay between a feature is announced and the actual fix, but with an average of one new version every year we're half way of Gopro8 life and can't benefit from telemetry...

The only way is to pay for an external software...which means this is technically doable...but GOPRO doesn't seem to consider this as a problem.

Lack of focus on customer feedback.

Was lässt uns das vermuten .... ?

Could you tell any estimation when you fix the bug(GPS) in Quick App for Windows?

Current installed version 2.7.0.945

I am really upset that I should buy additional software for getting GPS data. I could agree with price 5$ but not 50$
You spent too much money on adverts of the new version of the camera but didn't tell that it doesn't work with Quik App.

Smiley Sad

@grandtree40486 Quik is not going to be updated. They are working on a new editing software called Mural, but nobody knows whether this will be for normal edits or 360 videos, or when it will come out.

So, let me get this straight.

The Quik app says "Gauges are only available for videos captured with the Karma drone, or HERO5 and newer cameras with GPS turned on."

My Hero9 has it's GPS turned on, and is newer than the HERO5.

And GoPro's solution for me is...  Nothing?

Learn to read would be my only advice. Maybe then you'd see there is a firmware fix coming this November yo fix gps issues with the hero 9. Also quik is discontinued software as well as being terrible software. So learn to use a real video editor.

GoPro QUIK for desktop (windows/Mac) was discontinued a number of years ago.  It is no longer supported or updated, the last camera it fully supported was the GoPro Hero 7.  It will not support the GoPro Hero 8, it will not support the GoPro Hero 9.

Quik for Android and iOS is fully supported and up to date, so you can use that.

If you want to add gauges using windows or mac, you will need to download something like this:

Ma Ti embra possibile che il software non supporti più le camere 8 e 9 e la MAX? Non mi sembra assolutamente una cosa corretta da parte di GoPro! File da 4 GB non posso scaricarli sul computer e gestirli come sembre con Quik per Mac o Windows ma devo gestire il tutto da cellulare? quindi andando a consumare batteria sia del cellulare che della GoPro ed attendere il caricamento di più file da 4Gb?

A me non sembra corretto, anzi, non è proprio corretto!

As stated, GoPro Quik for desktop does not support the GoPro Hero 8, GoPro Hero 9 or GoPro Hero Max.  This is because the software was long discontinued before those particular camera's were released.  They all record the GPS data in a completely different format.

GoPro were no longer going to support a problematic, terrible piece of software which was costing them time, resources and money when there was so much competition out on the market (dashware, racerender etc).

They provide a completely free app for Android and iOS which works quite well and is constantly being improved.  According to the last investor relations meeting notes, GoPro will be looking at a new desktop app, but there is no timeline on when that could be.

You seem to imply that an Android or iOS app is sufficient.  It is not.  A phone or tablet may be good enough for editing a 3 minute video of your kid's birthday cake, but it is a TERRIBLE platform for editing large high-resolution 4K or 5K  videos that can reach 40 GB or more each.  If Quik on your phone suits your needs, that's fine.  But don't snidely suggest that no one else needs anything more capable. Quik on Android or iOS is grossly inadequate.

GoPro software support is abysmal.  It is the worst of any tech company with which I have ever dealt.  They also acquired Dashware then left it to rot on the vine.  It is shameful that this company doesn't provide even a simple mechanism for merging chapter videos from their flagship products while preserving telemetry data.

You seem to imply that an Android or iOS app is sufficient.

Sufficient for what?  I never made any claims as to what it's sufficient for, so what do you think it's sufficient for?  GoPro know where their customer base lies and that's what they are concentrating on.  Casual users will want to post social media clips and will quickly do so using the app, pro users will user prosoftware packages.

It is not.

It is not for what?  Make complete statements.

A phone or tablet may be good enough for editing a 3 minute video

Yes, I agree with that statement, for a quick 3 minute of less video, use a mobile app if you need to.  Frankly the majority of users stop watching a video around the 15 second mark, so why you would want to make a 3 minute video is beyond me unless you've got some stunning content.

of your kid's birthday cake,

Definitly not stunning content.

but it is a TERRIBLE platform for editing large high-resolution 4K or 5K  videos that can reach 40 GB or more each.

Yes I totally agree.  Anyone editing such video on their phone or even a tablet needs their head examined.

If Quik on your phone suits your needs, that's fine.

I doubt you really believe that as evidenced by your next statement.

But don't snidely suggest that no one else needs anything more capable.

I didn't.  I simply stated the facts.  There was nothing snide about it.  I'm not asking you to like the facts, but they are still the facts.  Nick Woodman even said in the past that the reason they didn't spend more time on video editors is because the market was over saturated with them and it was a waste of time and resources for GoPro to try and compete.  It was also made clear in the latest invester relations talk that the only reason they'd look at the desktop editor ever again is due to the fact that they want it to push their cloud subscription.  Again, just facts.

Quik on Android or iOS is grossly inadequate.

And there was you just stating "If Quik on your phone suits your needs, that's fine".  Which is it?  Just fine or  Grossly inadequate?

GoPro software support is abysmal.

What software support have you asked for?  Who did you approach?  The software support for the app is actually run by some quite earnest people who put a lot of hard work into creating and improving the app.  It's also quite a small department so for their size vs their workload, I think they are quite great people.

It is the worst of any tech company with which I have ever dealt.

I'm sure they are.

They also acquired Dashware then left it to rot on the vine.

Actually they purchased the company so they could integrate it's software into their own without violating patents.  Many tech companies all over the world have done this.  GoPro have done nothing new here.

It is shameful that this company doesn't provide even a simple mechanism for merging chapter videos from their flagship products while preserving telemetry data.

there is already software out there that can do this, why would GoPro waste time and money developing software that does the exact same thing?

I totally agree with most of what you say (loyalexper8708). But try adding gauges to a 129 gig motorcycle ride. Even the cool Telemetry Overlay program has a hard time with that. It takes about a week for me to get down to an editable file of 335 gig after using Telemetry Overlay. I have found that if you try and process more than a few files the speed keeps getting farther off. So now I just process each one to add just the speed then once I have them all proscessed with the speed I make one large file in Telemetry Overlay then use Telemetry extractor to combine all of the rest of the data that doesnt seem to mind what ever errors are creeping in. I can then use that GPX file to create the map, distance and elevation gauges. Then I use Corel Video Stidio to edit out the parts that I don't want. What is surprising is how hard it is to take an 8 hour video and get it to less than an hour.

To be chastised by the following member is a little over the top. He may be right but GoPro is still one of the worst companies on the planet, and don't seem to care about anyone that is actually putting hours of data on their cameras. While it might be boring to some, I am always surprised at some of the scenery I missed because I was concentrating on keeping a 900 pound motorcycle on the road.

If it wasnt for Kuna's excelent programs I would have taken my Hero 8 back to Costco a long time ago.

With phone cameras so good now I don't even know why anyone would use a GoPro for short videos. My phone takes great 8K vidio but I don't have anything to watch it on. It is great for grabbing a picture that is amazingly good. So again I don't uderstand what is even keeping GoPro alive at all. Their last few cameras have all had overheating and lockup problems. They need to take a step back and get their software usable before coming out with the same basic camera year after year with no real improvements.

But what do I know, I only wrote software and built hardware for the Rockwell B1 and then for the F22 flight simulator. GoPro couldn't get a military contract if their lives depended on it.

I agree with you 100%. The Hero 8 does overheat and for me that is at 1080 resolution, no fancy video settings. The battery life is terrible. Hell, the thing draws so much power that over time it draws the battery down even when plugged into a external power source. Finally, I would still like to know when processing several hours worth of video on a phone, with it's tiny screen and limited memory, is preferable to a PC. That's a load of...  For a premium camera I expect at least a level of acceptable support. Never before have I bought hardware that didn't have some sort of VIABLE software support. By that I mean the ability to handle all the data the hardware supports on a platform that makes said data easy to process. That is not a phone!

CLP7, You hit the nail right on the head. My Harley can hardly keep the Hero 8 charged while recording at 4k with it plugged into a 4 amp

cigarette USB charger. I've tried so many chargers I've lost count. I returned a Hero 7 for locking up and loosing precious video. Lost one of me missing a deer by half an inch. Did find out the anti-lock brakes work really good.

I am really surprised that one of the half way decent video editors don't process the telemetry on the Hero's, that’s probably where 98% of the video that are edited on their programs come from. GoPro sure won't step up to the plate any time soon. They are way to busy laughing all the way to the bank.

It's been a year since your post and it's still not working, so I'd say they're not taking people's issuer seriously after all
