Make Sure Your Camera Has the Latest Software
You’ll need the latest HERO8 Black software to unlock all of Media Mod’s features.

Update Your Software with the GoPro App
  1. Download the app from the Apple® App Store® or Google Play.
  2. Follow the app’s on-screen instructions to connect your camera to your mobile device. If new camera software is available, the app will tell you how to install it.
Update Manually
  1. Visit gopro.com/update.
  2. Choose HERO8 Black from the list of cameras.
  3. Select Update your camera manually and follow the instructions.


Inserting HERO8 Black into Your Media Mod
Take the door off your HERO8 Black, and then slide the camera into your Media Mod.

User-added image WARNING: Media Mod is not waterproof. Using it under water will damage both your Media Mod and your camera.



Using Your New Microphone Settings
Once you connect Media Mod to your HERO8 Black, you’ll discover new settings that let you take full advantage of Media Mod’s built-in directional mic.

 
  1. Tap the Video settings.

OptionDescription
Front (Default)Use the Media Mod directional mic to prioritize audio coming from in front of the camera.
BackUse the Media Mod directional mic to prioritize audio coming from behind of the camera.
StereoUse when wind is not a factor and you want to ensure that your GoPro records in stereo.

Heads Up: Your camera’s previous mic setting will be restored when Media Mod is removed. The mic setting you selected above will be restored the next time you use your Media Mod.

PRO TIP: You can set up a shortcut if you change microphone settings often. Press and hold an existing shortcut and then choose Microphones from the list on the right.



Connecting an External Microphone
Media Mod has a built-in 3.5mm external mic port that lets you use an external microphone to enhance the audio in your videos. Plug in your microphone, and then select the best audio input setting for your video.
  1. From your camera’s main screen, swipe down to access the Dashboard.
  2. Tap Preferences > Input/Output > Audio Input.
  3. Scroll through the options on the right and choose the one you want.

Standard Mic (default)Use with standard non-powered mics.
Standard Mic+Increases standard non-powered mic sensitivity by 20dB if the audio is not loud enough.
Powered MicUse with self-powered mics.
Powered Mic+Increases powered mic sensitivity by 20dB if the audio is not loud enough.
Line InUse with audio equipment other than a mic (mixer, guitar preamp, karaoke machine, etc.).

Heads Up: If you’re not sure which option to select, check the information that came with your microphone.


Connecting to a Big Screen with an HDMI Cable
Media Mod has a micro-HDMI port that lets you connect your HERO8 Black to an HDTV. You’ll be able to see your photos and videos on the big screen or to use it to preview your shot. Plug a micro-HDMI cable (sold separately) into your Media Mod, and then choose an HDMI setting in your camera’s Preferences menu.
  1. From your camera’s main screen, swipe down to access the Dashboard.
  2. Tap Preferences > Input/Output > HDMI Output.
  3. Scroll through the options on the right and choose the one you want.

MonitorDisplay your camera’s live view with camera info on an HDTV.
LiveDisplay your camera’s live view without camera info on an HDTV.

Heads Up: 4K preview and playback on a 4K TV will be displayed in full resolution at a maximum of 30 frames per second. The maximum resolution while recording is 1440p for 4:3 content and 1080p for footage shot in 16:9.

Media Playback on Your HDTV
There are two ways to navigate the media playback menu on your TV. 

Button Control
  1. Press the Mode button User-added image on your camera to cycle through your options.
  2. Press the Shutter button User-added image on your camera to make a selection.

Touch Screen Control
Swipe and tap your camera’s screen to navigate and select items.



Combining Mods
Media Mod can be used with other GoPro Mods to create custom capture solutions for your HERO8 Black.
