Remote and hero5 session

Hello I’ve had a hero5 session for a couple of years, but recently bought a GoPro remote (not the smart one, the one with just two buttons). I had no problem paring the remote to the camera. When I first used it I used the GoPro app to set up the position of the camera and then used the remote to start/stop a recording just to make sure it was working. I then powered off the remote / camera by holding down the power/mode button. 10 mins later I powered back on and started a 2 min recording. I then stopped and powered off the camera again. 5 mins after that I tried to power on the remote/ camera but the remote just continuously showed the Wi-fi connecting icon. I cycled on off a few times but the remote would not connect to the camera. They were about 10m apart outdoors. When I got home I tried again and it worked, then it didn’t, then it did! It seems very unreliable! If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated!

Re: Remote and hero5 session

@jfbwilts, since the GoPro camera connects via Wi-Fi, it might be possible that the camera automatically connects to your phone whenever it detects the wireless enabled in the mobile device. What I can suggest is, you can turn off your mobile device's Wi-Fi if you won't be using the GoPro App to control / access the camera.

If the connection drops at a certain range, it can be because either the camera's Wi-Fi is getting blocked or it is eventually dropping. Have you tested this while in an open field, no visible Wi-Fi signal obstructions (e.g. concrete/brick wall, ceramic, water, metal, and mirrors) between the camera and the remote?

If there are no obstacles that can possibly cause the connection issue, you can try re-flashing the camera's firmware to help correct any errors with the current software installation. Follow the manual update instructions specified on this article: Software Update Instructions for Session Cameras

Re: Remote and hero5 session

Hi @jfbwilts

Thanks for sharing the details of your concern.

You may try resetting the camera's Wi-Fi information.

Once done, proceed with the pairing process again.

See if the same happens.

Re: Remote and hero5 session

I have improved the stability of the connection I think by turning the Wi-fi and Bluetooth off on my phone when using with the remote. This seems to have improved things. Could it be that they were interfering or the camera was connecting to the phone and not the remote?

Re: Remote and hero5 session

One other thing to add. The camera is attached to the wing of a flexwing microlight (ultralight) aircraft. This is about 4.5metres away from the remote which is attached the metal (aluminium) control frame. This is a open cockpit aircraft so should be little interference. We are moving through the air at approximately 70mph. Is any of this relevant to a poor connection?
