Question about snorkeling with the Hero Black 7...

I bought the GoPro Hero Black 7 about a month ago and have absolutely loved it.  The reason I purchased it was for my family's first trip to Maui.  My question is whether or not I should get the supersuit for snorkeling.  There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer anywhere online.  While the camera says it is waterproof to 33 ft, is the picture quality just as good without the supersuit or does that provide an added level of clarity?  I'm also considering purchasing a red filter which I understand is only compatible with the supersuit.

Thanks for any suggestions.  I have read a number of responses to other questions in this forum and have loved the help and support the community seems to give one another.

Just to clarify some of the unanswered questions, the Super Suit comes with three back doors. Two which are waterproof and one that is open (skeleton). When on land, you can use the skeleton back door for access to the rear LCD and slightly improved audio (over using solid waterproof door), but you would still need to lock the rear LCD when used under water. It also does not increase dive depth waterproofing. It does, however, provide considerable protection for the camera, so if you need this, it's worth having.

You are given two water proof back doors so that you have one to put the Floaty on and the other to use without it. When using the Super Suit, the camera settings are accessed by using the front LCD. To put the camera into the settings mode, you press the Mode and Shutter button. In this mode, you can adjust settings like frame rate, resolution, wb, ISO, sharpness, EV, and Color. To change Modes like from Video to Photo, you just press the side Mode button.

For the most part, the HERO7 Black does a very good job color correcting automatically under water. You can improve it with filters and/or manually adjusting the WB. As was mentioned, it really depends on the diving conditions.

If you have a decent editor, using the Flat Color profile will allow you to make adjustments not done in camera pretty easily. Some people like to use the Native WB, but I find this much harder to color correct and not worth the extra time and effort.

Even on shallow diving I like to use the Super Suit.  I often use it when surfing as well.  It's not that I have to use it, but I like the added protection and assurance. So, to answer the question about added value, if the added protection and assurance is important to you, then I think it add significant value.

Re: Question about snorkeling with the Hero Black 7...

Hi @mjogg11

The SuperSuit makes the camera waterproof up to 196ft (60m).

Filters do help with color correction.

  • Magenta: The magenta filters are ideal for use in green waters, which are found in freshwater lakes and reservoirs or salt water that appears green due to algae.
  • Red: The red filter are ideal for blue salt water and clear fresh water, which are found in sunny tropical locations.

*Note- Filters are no longer available on gopro.com. You can still find these filters at various online retailers.

Thanks!

Ej

Thank you @aragon1006 !

Other than increasing the depth the camera can operate at does the supersuit add any value or is its purpose solely for deeper dives?  Does it allow you change settings with the touchscreen in the back?  Without it I have to lock the screen.   I have also read that the color correction within the Hero 7 Black almost removes the need for the red filter.  Is that true?

I appreciate the help!

Re: Question about snorkeling with the Hero Black 7...

Hi @mjogg11

The SuperSuit also serves as an added protection for extreme activities.

Please see https://shop.gopro.com/mounts/super-suit/AADIV-001.html for additional information.

The HERO7 Black is able to adjust its AWB settings when used in water. However, this will still depend on diving conditions.

Thanks!
