How scary is a supersuit-leak while diving?

[ Edited ]

Hi! So, i have a wierd question for the board. To put it in context here's what happened; so we just bought a Hero Black 5 with a Supersuit and a red filter to bring on our honeymoon to primairly film while diving. We did not have any problems during our first 3 dives which were at about 10m. But suddenly on the fourth dive which were at about the same depth (10m or so) i suddenly discovered that we have a leak in the supersuit when we got out of the water.

I figured that i might have some sand in the sealing silicone or something and that i should just rinse the house, change the backdoor to the extra backdoor that comes with the supersuit and try again. However, it did not seem to help. After todays dive i had a small amount of water inside the supersuit when i got up. Even after a very thourogh wash and inspection.

Now, to my questions. First of all, There seemed to only have been a very small leak, the housing was not filled with water, it was just wet on the inside. How much water is actually not good for the camera when the suit is still kinda sealed. Does the preassure actully press water inside the camera and break it if there is a small amount in the supersuit or should i just carry on and not think about it?

We are currently in a place where the dives are deeper (about 10 - 18m) so im a bit scarded to try to bring it down to 18m when there is water inside the supersuit. The place we are also has no camera shop so we cant really just buy a new housing to be able to film the rest of our honeymoon, is there anything i can do to the housing to fix the problem?

I'm so sorry for the long post. Thank you so much for all your help!

Re: How scary is a supersuit-leak while diving?

Hi @graytree88844,

I am very sorry to hear that you are having some trouble with that camera while on your honeymoon. I can definitely understand that you want to capture all of your dives. Water getting into the Supersuit while diving is not good. You will want to make sure that the camera is still functioning properly after the dive, and that no water has gotten into the camera. There are a number of things that can cause a leak and affect the integrity of that seal, and it can be something as small as some grains of sand. I would recommend seeing if you are able to replicate the leak without the camera in a sink or bathtub before diving again. Make sure that there is nothing that could be affecting that seal. Here are some basic steps for ensuring you are ready to use that camera:

  • General:
    • After every use in salt water, rinse the camera with fresh water, and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
    • We do not recommend the use of any solvents to clean the camera's exterior surface or internal lens.
    • We offer Screen Protectors (sold separately) to prevent surface scratches on the front and rear LCD screens.
  • Lens:
    • To clean the lens, wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
    • If debris becomes lodged between the lens and the trim ring, flush it out with water or air. Do not insert foreign objects around the lens.
  • Doors, Buttons & Latches:
    • Rinse the camera with fresh water to flush out any remaining debris, salt or sand.
    • If debris is caked into the camera, door or button crevices, soak the camera in warm water for 15 minutes to loosen the debris, and then rise the unit under running water.
    • If you find that a button is sticking, we recommend removing the door (if possible) and repeatedly pressing the button under running water. Be sure to take precautions to protect any exposed ports if you are unable to remove the door.
    • Allow the camera to air dry, or dry it with soft, lint-free cloth.
    • Prior to use, visually inspect all seals and door buttons on the camera to ensure that they are dry and free from debris.
  • Microphones:
    • For best audio performance, shake the camera or blow on the mic to remove water and debris from the microphone holes.
    • To prevent damage to the internal waterproof membranes during cleaning, do not use compressed air to blow into the mic holes.

If you are still having issues after that then you may need to contact support directly. You can do so by phone or chat! https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus

Hope that helps!

Ryan

Re: How scary is a supersuit-leak while diving?

While @ryanv12566 has given you the official GoPro response on this, I'd like to add a few things. My answer does not supercede the information you have been given and should not be considered to be coming from GoPro.

Having said that,

Your GoPro camera remains waterproof even with the protective lens off. Unless the case becomes full of water, there shouldn't be enough atmospheric pressure to force the water into the camera.

When cleaning the case you'll want to take the rubber seal off and rinse it with distilled water and hang it to dry. There are two sides to the seal. One side is flat while the other is rounded. It's very important that the flat side is against the door and the rounded side faces the camera. When shutting the door, press both sides with your thumbs starting at the bottom and then slide them up to the top. Once the door is shut, check that the seal is completely inside the groove on the case side and then engage the latch.

I hope this helps.

Come back and post some links to the vids of your dives! Always great to see what people are capturing with their GoPro cameras.

Regards,

Daniel

Re: How scary is a supersuit-leak while diving?

Hi Ryan! How did your problem with the super suite end up? Did they offer you a brand new super suit? I'm having the same issue with mine...after 5 dives :(

Thanks so much
