External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

I'm using a Gopro7 Black in an airplane, powered by an external battery. I cannot see any of the flashing red lights while recording videos in flight and therefore can't tell whether the camera is recording, or not. So I bought a smart remote, which flashes red during recording. Unfortunately, however, when I use the smart remote to stop recording, the external battery shuts itself off after a few seconds of inactivity, and then the GoPro's internal battery discharges at its normal rate--before my flight is concluded. So the smart remote is worse than useless in flight. Is there some way to use the smart remote to start and stop recording without causing the external battery to disconnect?

Re: External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

Thanks for your good advice.  I've managed to get the GoPro7 Black to record video with the internal battery removed and power from the external battery.

When I turn the external battery on (or plug it in) the GoPro's red lights flash once after about 2 seconds, but the displays remain off (dark).

Then when I press the GoPro's side button, there are 3 beeps and red flashes, and the displays light up.  The back display shows "NO BATT" and a white x in a red box.  The front display shows a power plug symbol in the lower right corner.  After that, pressing the top button starts and stops recording normally.

As long as the GoPro's screen is lit up, there's enough power draw to keep the external battery awake.  (I'm sorry to report that the new battery times out at 30 seconds of no load, just as the Jackery Bolt does, and I imagine that all lithium batteries probably do the same.)

So I can record video and start and stop the recording repeatedly with the camera's top button.

Also, after several unsuccessful attempts to get the Smart Remote to control the GoPro7 Black, it has suddenly begun working as I think ought to be normal. It takes several seconds to make the connection, but once that's done it seems to work reliably. Pressing the Smart Remote's red shutter/select button causes the camera to start and stop recording.  That didn't use to work--would cause the camera to lock up with the displays dark and the red lights constantly on--and the only way I could get it to respond was to remove all power.  But now, for whatever reason, it seems to be working correctly.

Pressing the power/mode button on the Smart Remote for several seconds causes repeated beeping and flashing, and both the camera and the Smart Remote go dark.  Pressing it again WITHIN 30 SECONDS re-starts them both.  But after 30 seconds the external battery shuts itself off and with no internal battery, the GoPro, it shuts itself off, too.  After that, the only way to resume recording is to turn the GoPro back on manually, and then usually the Smart Remote will reconnect within about 10 seconds or so.  Usually it continues to display the wifi symbol, but after about 20 or 30 seconds, pressing its red button causes the GoPro to begin recording, and then the Smart Remote's display changes to reflect that state.

So it looks like I'll be able to control the camera with the Smart Remote as long as I don't hit the power/mode button.  That's certainly not ideal, but it's acceptable until you can revise the GoPro7 Black's software to make it do what your advertising copy claims it does.

I hope you'll let me know when the update is ready--please.

The camera's software is version 01.80.  The Smart Remote's is 1.1.0.

Re: External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

Hello @greenpeak18725. This could be due to the fact that the battery does not get charged when the camera is recording. The external battery stops supplying charge to the battery/camera setup when recording starts. when the recording is stopped, the camera detects only the internal battery.

We tested and found out that in order for the camera to continue deriving power from the external charger, the battery can be removed. The camera continues to record even without the battery as long as it remains connected to an external power source. Starting and stopping recording does not interrupt the connection between the charger and the camera. Caution must be taken for this setup though - the connection between the external charger and the camera must be secured (physically) to avoid total loss of power, and the camera should not be powered off.

Re: External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

Thanks for your reply and suggestion to record with the internal battery removed. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make it work. My GoPro7 Black will start up on external battery alone, but when I use the Smart Remote to start recording a video, the camera's display goes completely black (appears to be still on but displaying the color black) and the red "busy" lights stay on continuously--no blinking. And the camera doesn't respond to ANY inputs. Neither button works, short or long press, and the remote's buttons seem to have no effect, either. The only way I can get the camera out of that mode is to disconnect the external power. If it had started a video file, the file is corrupt, with zero video content.

So it was a good try, but it appears not to work. Do you have any other suggestions?

Re: External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

Hi @greenpeak18725

Thanks for getting back to us.

Please try running a manual update on your camera. https://gopro.com/en/us/update/hero7-black

Once done, try the camera again with the same setup.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks!
Ej

Re: External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

The manual update installed and the camera seems to work properly.  With the battery removed and the GoPro7Black plugged into an AC-powered 5 volt USB supply, the Smart Remote works exactly as I wanted: it starts and stops video recording and turns the camera off and on.

Unfortunately, though, that doesn't work with the external battery.  The update seems to have made no difference there. When the remote starts a video, the camera's front screen goes to 1 second and then the screens go black, the red lights stay on constantly, and the buttons are unresponsive. I have to power the camera down in order to get it to do anything.

So it looks like the problem now is with the external battery, a Jackery Bolt. Evidently its controller won't keep the GoPro powered correctly when it's recording. That seems odd, though, because the Bolt will power the GoPro for more than 4 hours when the internal battery is installed.

I'll try fooling with it a bit more, hope against hope.  But I've also just ordered a 20000 mAh battery, a Boulder ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGGGQBS/ref=psdc_7073960011_t4_B07PHQF6WG ) that should at least give me longer duration than my airplane has in fuel capacity. It's auto-powerdown time is said to be "15 minutes," which is a lot longer than the Jackery Bolt's 35 seconds. That may help, too.

By the way, the user guide that came with my smart remote stops the pairing instructions with the Hero6. As I recall, the Hero7Black requires a slightly different method.

My Smart Remote pairs (via magic, I think) but it takes what seems like a long time to get ready to control the camera--something like 10 or 20 seconds. That gives me the willies when I'm trying to get the airplane and myself ready to take off.

I really like two features of the 7Black, compared to the 3 Black I've been using since it was the newest GoPro: The back display is obviously very useful. But what I like best of all is the Auto stabilization. It's simply terrific in the airplane cockpit! It produces an interesting effect: the airplane seems to move around while the horizon outside stays rock-solid. That enhances the viewer's impression of being aloft, without being intrusive at all. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD2IZRiaahg  Just skip to 2:20 or 3:00 to see the auto-stab effect.

This is a twilight flight to beat the night, to land on a river before it got too dark to see the water and return to an airport in time to comply with the FAA's night non-currency prohibition against flying a passenger later than one hour after sunset. The purpose was to re-familiarize a seaplane

Re: External battery disconnects after stopping video recording with the smart remote

Thank you for the update, @greenpeak18725. Great to know that the manual update worked. Great video, too - made it seem like we were in the plane as well. Thank you for sharing!

We appreciate the feedback on the user guide. Although the process is generally the same, specific instructions can be found at How to Pair Your Camera with Your Smart Remote . We will pass your feedback to the team.

If you haven't yet, try resetting the remote control and pair it with the camera again. This should take care of the issue on delayed reaction.

This is just to confirm that using the GoPro7 Black with an external battery and the standard, internal battery removed works fine with the Smart Remote. I tried it in flight yesterday and successfully started and stopped recording many times without any problems at all. I took care not to press the Smart Remote's power switch, and all was well.
