Dismal experience with Smart Remote & GoPro Black 5

I tried everything to make the Smart Remote work. However, it works for a minute or two and then disconnects or freezes. 
Reset connection many times. I reset the Smart Remote. I did Factory Reset. 
Sometimes even during the pairing the Remote freezes. The camera icon just stops moving and it is gone. 

GoPro has firmware 2.60
Remote has firmware 1.10

 

I have gotten nowhere with GoPro on this issue.
