Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]
I haven’t been able to get this mode to work. It was trying to track satellite the first time but never did it again. Now it instantly gives me a time.It has the correct lat and long coordinates. However it’s times are way off. By 4-10 hours. I’ve tried 8 times. And tips for getting a correct time?

You must also have the camera's time and date set accurately.  USe this first https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/precisiontime/

So I just did the time at and tried it for sunset..... 15minutes before and record for one hour. It said it would start at 5:30. A google search of subset for my area say it will be at 7:53. Any other things to try?

Interesting that is different this time. So it does seem to be a camera time vs GPS time issue. Use this !RESET QR Code.  Then restart the camera.  Then run the !sS sunsset start, what time do you get?

Cool! Much nicer result. Said it would star at 7:14 which is pretty close. Should I be running that reset code before I do a new QR?

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

I believe you had the wrong time and date when you first tried the Sunset timer. To avoid another long GPS lock, the camera used the last reading, it will do this for any reuse with 24 hours as a battery saving technique.  The !RESET cleared the GPS location/time info, and allowing for a correct Sunset time calculation. You will not need a !RESET next time, as long as your camera's local time is good. The Calculation is approximate, but fine for timelapses.

Yes your right. When it did not work the first time I thought it might be my time so I corrected it and tried again. I dident realize that it was reusing the first time. Thanks for the help!

So it still didn't work. I set it all up and it correctly said it would begin recording in 2.7 hours then shut itself off. I left it and came back hours later and turned it on. It immediately said it would begin in 2.7 hours hours. Interestingly the clock showed the exact time it was set to when it shut off. Come to think of it this happened several times while trying to make this work. It’s as if the clock does not function when the gopro is off. Anyone see. This before?

"clock showed the exact time it was set to when it shut off" Sounds like you included the time in your command, which included a repeat.  The camera is very literal.  You told to set the time to 'x', wake at 'y' and then, repeat, which set the time to 'x' again. Lessons learned.  Set the time, only own from here: https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/precisiontime/   And set then set your solar timelapse from here https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/solartimelapse/ .  Don't attempt to do it all in one QR Code via the QR Control Customizer.

So far I've managed to capture a Sunset but the Sunrise QR tells me that it is set and at what time - but again this morning there is no Media recorded, checked the timing etc they all appear accurate - so strange its fine in the evening!

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

I have not used the customized. That’s why I’m confused. It only have used the sunset qr created. I used the precession time QR. Then I used the sunset qr. there’s no option to input time if you use the creator. Every time I shut off the gopro and turn it back on it the time is different. I used the QR code... and also changes it in preferences.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

Any other ideas? My process is that I turn on the camera, use the time qr, then specifically the sunset QR(I do not use the general purpose qr creator), it shows on screen that it is going to start in say 3.9 hours. The camera then shuts off and never turns on again. After sunset I go back and there's nothing. It usually says the same beginning in 3.9 hours message when I turn it on. The time on the GoPro is the exact time as when I setup. It's as if the GoPro's internal clock does not work.  What do you think?

That make zero sense to me.  So let not start with the hardest thing fast.  Try this command:   !60NmV!S!3E

In 60 second (it will shutdown if working correctly) , wake in around 55s, set the mode to Video, then start recording a stop after above 5 seconds.  Report back.  This will test the wake timer, even if the clock is wrong.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

Hi,

I faced a similar issue (no footage captured) with the sunrise timer set using https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/solartimelapse/.

oC30mNLeA!r-3600S!4800E

I tried a simpler version of the command with no luck.

!r-3600S!4800E!15O

While setting up the device using the above commands, the info shown on the device after the scan was correct.

The device time was set using https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/precisiontime/.

Note: The time between the scan and the wake time (for the above two commands) was around 4-6 hours.

After a couple of failed attempts and no footage, I woke up just before the capture was set to start and saw that the device didn't turn on (even after 20 minutes of the intended time). Then I turned the device on manually and it showed me a time delay of ~23+hr (i.e. it'll start the next day).

To check if the wake timer was working, I used the below command which worked like a charm.

!90S!4800E!15O

Related experiments that worked:

Note: The time between the scan and the target wake time for the below commands was ~2 minutes.

!s-11:30S!10E!15O
!r-22:36S!10E!15O
!r-81000S!10E!15O

Additional info:

Firmware version: 01.70.75

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

I'm going to have to work on the Sunset and Sunrise Time-lapse configuration page.  I think other settings that are already on the camera are having an impact.  Using mNL to enable Night Lapse is not reliable as it only works if the camera is using video mode not photo mode, which the QR Code can't set yet. Also you must make sure the default mode is for timelapse. There are likely a few gotchas like that that are preventing this from working for everyone. It does however work when the camera is configured correctly. I just did a sunrise timelapse that worked perfectly.

Steps

1) Set you date and time with the QR Code.

2) Set you timelapse mode and settings (Night Lapse Video, interval etc.)

3) Set you default preset to Last Timelapse

4) Initialize the solar timelpase from the web page, get the GPS lock, etc. and the camera auto shutdown.

5) Manually restart the camera to confirm the correct wake time.

if good, let the camera auto shutdown, it will work.

if bad, cancel, and do the steps again.

Things to avoid:

 1) Do not charge the camera during any long time-lapse.

OdanO, I just purchased my 1st GoPro and was excited to learn about the sunrise time lapse. I've tried the QR codes two days in a row and have the same issues. I'm going to follow the steps you listed, however, I'm unsure of the steps you list - specifically, step 4. Is there a place I can find more details about steps 3 & 4? Thanks

3) Set you default preset to Last Timelapse

On camera, Preferences -> General -> Default Preset = Last Used Time Lapse.  This can be done with the QR Control Customizer https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/custom/ and the mobile app.

4) Initialize the solar timelpase from the web page, get the GPS lock, etc. and the camera auto shutdown.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

Thank you for your response.  I've got things programmed and can't wait to see it work.  With regards to the Sunrise setting, I understand the start time before the sunrise.  I live in a high rise with a SE view where the best colors are often before the sunrise itself.  However, I'm uncertain as to the stop time.  End after XX minutes of capture.  What does that mean exactly with regard to the stop time?  If I set the start to be 60 minutes before sunrise, does setting this for "90 minutes of capture," mean the recording will stop 30 minutes after the sunrise time?

Also, is there any way to provide continuous power to the camera in order to capture extended time lapses?  I have a Nikon and found a plug-in power supply that uses the battery connection to the camera to keep it powered.    Thank you for your advice and help.

Yes.

Yes, the camera can be powered by USB.  However, remove the battery, as the wake timer will not work if a battery in being charged.

+1 for this - the sunrise function timelapse function doesn't work for me either.  As a workaround I'm looking at the timed start function instead (which should do the same thing as a 1-off but it would be awesome if sunrise / sunset did work properly (and I did have a good GPS lock)).

Great work Labs guys!

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

I promise you the sunrise function does work, I just used it again. Only use https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/solartimelapse/  as it avoids common user mistakes.

I can technically prove it works.  As you have stated, you can manually set the start time, and that works correctly.

Example:

!05:00S!3600E!R  <- So 5am Start, ending 1 hour later, repeat, this is working for you.

All that does is create a file called MISC/delay.bin

In that file is:

[05:00:00]!S!3600E!R    <- a slightly different format, but the same command, this is what the camera runs when it wakes. If you formatted your SD card, added this file to the MISC folder, turned it on, it would begin a scheduled capture at the planned time.

So what is different with GPS scheduled captures?  Almost nothing.

So just now I did the sunrise timelapse webpage (linked above).

It took about a minute to get a good lock and location, this part is different. But once it calculates the start time, the process is the same.

I looked on my SD card for MISC/delay.bin and this is what is contained:

[05:52:08]!S!3600E!R

It is the same command.  So it is technically not possible for manual setting to work and sunrise setting to fail.

But I can help you.  Also in the MISC folder is qrlog.txt.  Here is the relevant section from my log file.

[2020-07-16 09:04:02 81% 37c] Read QR:oC30mNLeA!r-60S!3600E!R

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

Hello, it's been a few weeks since I implemented the solution recommended and it works 90% of the time.  However, there are a couple of quirks that I can't figure out.  Sometimes when I set up the sunrise, the camera skips over the next sunrise.  For example, one time I woke in the middle of the night and realized the camera wasn't set up.  I changed the battery and turned on the camera.  I used the precision date and time QR code first.  Then used the same sunrise QR code that works almost every day - without changing anything.  My default settings are as you described earlier and the same ones that most of the time.  The camera display acknowledges the settings but displays a turn-on time that skips the impending sunrise which was only 3 hours away.  It did the same thing last night after I went through the same sequence at 10:30 pm the night before the sunrise - which would have happened approximately 7.5 hours after.  This has happened 2-3 times.  Why isn't the camera consistently scheduling the on time for the immediate sunrise and occasionally skipping till the next day's sunrise?  I'm puzzled.

Good question, and good details.  I don't know, but I will explore.  You can help by send the Log file from within MISC/qrlog.txt.  Now I don't need all of this file, just the text from the last time you read a QR code for a sunrise.

The line will look like this:

[2020-06-20 11:34:20 42% 38c] Read QR:???????

And everything after that.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

thank you and interesting.

Something weird happen on July 5th, likely the camera booted in the wrong mode:

  [2020-07-05 05:33:14] start err:-6

It worked the next 3 day (until you cancelled):

  [2020-07-06 05:33:35 95% 22c] Start in:6 seconds

  [2020-07-07 05:34:11 26% 23c] Start:no wait

  [2020-07-08 05:34:33 97% 23c] Start in:5 seconds

  [2020-07-08 07:35:47 100% 25c] Cancel:CANCEL TIME DELAY

This the weirdness you described:

You set the time:

  [2020-07-09 04:22:57 100% 26c] Read QR:oT200709042252.03

About an 1h 10mins before sunrise, you set it to capture an hour before sunrise:
  [2020-07-09 04:23:02 99% 26c] Read QR:oC30mNLeA!r-3600S!5520E!R

This might have been too close, as the camera though you meant the next day:
[2020-07-09 04:23:33 99% 26c] Woke with Command:[29:35:39]f51!S!5520E!R

Yet is should have started in 10 minutes.  This is the bug for me to explore.

What happened on 19th onward, shows I broke the web page for sunsets, now fixed.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

Hello, Me again.  I'm still taking my daily sunrise time lapses.  However, since the time change last week the sunrise times are all off.  How can we change the start times to account for the switch from standard time to DLST and vice versa?  My process is to hit the precision time and date before going to the QR code for the sunrise.

Thanks,

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

Your error was to update the camera's clock.  When the sunset/sunrise calculation first occurs, it uses your current location and current clock time to determine the offset from clock time to solar events. The camera stores this offset. I have run a year long sunset timelapse, I never changed the clock, and all worked correctly. Now if you change the clock any amount, the solar event will be off by the same amount of time.   The sun doesn't care about DST.  If you want the camera to be on the correct time, you will have to reset the location calculation.

So on any time change (if you must update the camera):

  - use the QR code !RESET to clear timezone info.

  - restart the camera.

  - set the precision time.

  - Rescan your solar event command.

The camera will recalculate the offset, and you timelapse will be correct again.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

I followed that procedure and it still did the same thing.  The start time is not accounting for the DST.  So I keep missing the 45 minutes prior to sunrise when the sky is most colorful.

Any ideas on another fix for this issue?

It works here, so you have missed a step. Do you see the camera doing a GPS lock? A new GPS look is required. It should take about a minute, showing a DOP value.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

Can you explain what I need to look for?  I'm not as experienced on these cameras as you are and don't understand specifically what your saying I should see.  I typed in the command iRESET to the QR generator.  I let the camera see it.  Then I turned the camera off.   Turned it back on, set the precision time and date then pointed the camera at the QR code for the sunrise.

I just did it again and it shows the start time being 7:03.  I don't think it worked.

Re: Sunrise and sunset QR not working

[ New ]

I verified again it is working correct.

Scan !RESET  (not iRESET)

- The camera will say "QR Reset"   (see pic)

- Restart the camera

- Set the clock

- scan for sunset time.

The camera will say Awaiting GPS Lock (see pic)

Once at 100%, it will then say

"Precise GPS Lock   DOP  <value>"  (see pic)

Then it will display your lattitude and longitude.

To will now correctly calculate the offset between the clock and location (and display the start time in 24hr format.)  If you saw 17:03, that is 5pm (seems correct for North Hemisphere with a lattitude in the mid 30s.)

Thanks.  The IReset did the trick.  The i and ! look alike.
