transfer files from android to pc with usb

Hi,

I have just been bought a Hero7 which we took away for a week. I downloaded the app to my phone. After a few days I transferred a load of files from the camera to my phone via wifi, then deleted from the camera. I now want to transfer the files from the app on the phone to a laptop via the phone USB cable. I can't find a file anywhere on the phone though, despite 32GB of data showing for the GoPro app. Is it possible to transfer videos in this way?

If not will I have to insert the memory card the phone, transfer from phone to camera, then connect the camera to the PC?

Thank you.

Re: transfer files from android to pc with usb

You need to select your media from the GoPro app and then choose Save to Phone. Your media will then get transferred to your phones media gallery. From there you will be able to access it to transfer to your computer.

Join the club!  You are the third person to ask more or less the same question within the last 24 hours.  I am on iOS, but I too have the same issue, I brought a camera, went on holiday, used my iPad to take all content off the camera, and am now stuck, stuggling to rescue the content from 'within' the GoPro app on the iPad.

I could be wrong, but I think GoPro uses some form of internal file encoding to store the content, which is only accessible by the app.

Re: transfer files from android to pc with usb

Thanks @danielr15.  I appreciate that saving to your phone’s media gallery is the GoPro intended way for this to work, but it really doesn’t fit for me.  I use iCloud photos which is brilliant for my use case, any pictures taken on or imported into any of my iOS devices pretty quickly get synced to the cloud and my other devices, including my Mac.  However, this is my photo library, and I really don’t want to fill it up with video content, particularly unedited video content.  I simply want to get the raw video files off my iPad into folders on my desktop which I can then trim, edit etc..

In addition, I’m assuming that by exporting to the phone (or iPads) media library, you would be duplicating the content, that is it will exist on the device within the GoPro app and within the devices media library!  Not great if you have 60Gb of video content!

Re: transfer files from android to pc with usb

I don't believe the media is supposed to remain in the app memory once it's downloaded to the local media. If not, you can just delete it out of the recent media in the app, so either way, duplication shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Once you have the media on the local gallery, isn't the intention to move it onto your desktop? Could you not just Cut/Paste or just delete it when done? Turning off your iOS devices connections first should prevent it from syncing to your other devices.

I'm not trying to debate the merits of it being a good process or not, just provide the "How To" for moving media from the app to a computer. The answer is simply, save to device (phone/tablet) gallery and then transfer to your computer.

Re: transfer files from android to pc with usb

Thanks @danielr15.  I don’t believe media is automatically deleted from within the app when you save to local media.

As an iOS user, the local media is the Photos app which you can’t in anyway copy and paste from.  Essentially you can have it automatically upload to iCloud which then syncs with other devices (this is what I do), or you can plug it into a computer and use iTunes to sync photos.  I haven’t done it for some time, but I believe the iTunes sync will simply try and sync everything (40k+ photos) to my Mac, quote possibly getting stuff confused with the actual library which is already synced via iCloud.

I do appreciate your comment, and I will look into things, but from my previous experience trying to sync media from iOS to Mac via different methods, it often ends up in a world of hell and duplicates!

Essentially Photos (by name!) on iOS just isn’t the place to sync many gigs of video content, and by pushing users down this route GoPro have made, in my mind, the wrong decision.

Re: transfer files from android to pc with usb

It does sound like a poor design choice by Apple and it sounds like a very frustrating experience.  I use Android so I have full access to the file structure of my mobile device, so I'm not familiar with the limitations you're facing, sorry.  I'm not sure how GoPro could have made it any simpler, since the other option (other than saving inside the app) would be to save directly to your Photo gallery; which, sounds like Apple traps you into using iTunes or iCloud just to transfer to your computer.

Of course, if you utilize GoPro Plus, the app will automatically upload your GoPro media to the GoPro server and you can just select and download to your computer what you want, but this will be yet another cloud service for you.  Are you not able to use a SD adapter to just move the files from your mobile to an SD card or other external storage from your Apple device?  If so, then you could just move it from your mobile to your desktop this way.  It's terrible if Apple wont allow even this simple act of moving files from their devices.  Best of luck!

This has worked for me, that's brilliant.
