Re: mandatory login after upgrade

Running an iPhone so a rollback is very difficult. I have to wait for the retard who added in forced authentication into the capture app to realise what a stupid idea this is to people who use their cameras outside network coverage or are taking their cameras overseas and don't have a roaming plan.

I'm now using action camera suite. Allows me all the controls I had with capture without the authentication pain in the arse.

Thanks for the tip. One more step towards completely severing Go Pro related products from my hobby. Between this and the inexpensive accessories I get from Amazon, I'm glad I'm not giving this company any more money. When my GP cameras die, I'll just get Garmin Virbs.

Hi toughnoost144. You're lucky then because I can't get mine to work without having to login every single time I want to use my GoPro. 10 minutes drive and I'm out of mobile range so essentially this makes the camera useless.

I fully agree: Log-In requirement needs to be removed!

Just to make you guys aware of (for those who don't know): changing settings on the GoPro just requires http calls to the GoPro access point (wifi network).

You can simply connect your phone to the camera and send the command manually. O.K. not that convienient, but allows you to change the settings at least, so: better than nothing!

That's ridiculous Jeff and **bleep**ing stupid! I wanted to smash my GoPro yesterday trying to get it to connect in the backcountry without cell service. GoPro keeps making one stupid decision after the other and you're not going to be around for long if this keeps up. Now, **bleep**ing change it so I can skip the step to log in if I don't have any internet connection. Absolutely stupid!!!

This is just insane! GoPro, go hike in nature and clear your minds a bit, ok? Then try using your product and let me know if you find it cool to login at 3350m altitude without service looking at an amazing landscape.

Seriously, I fully understand your "need" for data, I work in a mobile software company, but have you heard for login tokens, device id and other, numerous ways of storing someones id and their actions OFFLINE and then SYNC that data once the user is back online?

If NOT, I will come to your offices and code that myself for FREE!!!!

It's unbeliavable to me that you are preventing users from using your product?

You have my email, I'm serious about coding this myself if you are so lazy!?

Totally not acceptable. When I was with the family in party and waiting for the registration to use the GoPro. Then they wait for so long that the candle finished burning. What the **bleep** is such feature? You want to collect my data, so force me to connect to the server everytime when using the GoPro.
I smash the camera just because it screw up the moment when I need the camera.

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

I am so frustrated with GoPro, support said the "log out feature" was disabled. Apparently it has been renabled, or a new bug has been created. Everytime I launch Capture after a day or two, the App launches and disconnects and requires a new login. Thankfully, The login seems to stay connected for the remainder of the day. It would seem when I do have cell coverage it disconnects more regularly. IDK. GoPro support said their servers went down around Christmas. This bait and switch has left me very angry at GoPro, I have given the company multiple chances, I've contacted GoPro numerous times, enough. GoPro basically gave us Pro users a [edited].

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

GoPro obviously doesn't care about their users experience all that much if they can't address such a big problem with their app.  There are multiple threads in this forum about this issue.  Meanwhile the mod won't even respond.  In a support forum, a problem causing users to be totally unable to use your product, and no official response or offer of help, that's a Vegas strip kind of sign saying to stay away.

I received a new Session 5 for Christmas, but I have since returned it and bought the new Virb.  I am stuck with my old Hero4 as it's too old to return, but it won't be getting much use anymore.

Are you able to tether with the Virb as the GoPro had intended? I've been researching alternatives, Virb and the Rincoh are at the top of the list right now... I loved my GoPro 4 and the old GoPro App that didn't require a login, I have one of those 24 hour batter packs and loved not having to worry about power. Sigh. I have bought a ton of GoPro gear and suggested the gear for years, but no more.

As an IT professional working in ecommerce for one of the worlds largest companies, survival means customer focus and service. Understand your customer, their needs and pain points, something gopro appears to have forgotten. This company is going nowhere, revenue comes from wowing your customers and winning new, not screwing the existing! Well done gopro, i've been a customer for less than a month and the experience was Sh*t!

There is NOTHING signing in does to help the customer / camera user. It is only data mining by GoPro. I've had enough. I want to throw it through the window.

Uninstall Capture then from iTunes reinstall the old GoPro app. No login required. Just never never never reinstall Capture

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

From this link.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/5p0zff/gopro_update_about_capture_app_login/

GoPro reached out to us about an update coming to the Capture App that should eliminate issues with not having internet when you go to use the application. Here is info:

With Capture 3.0, we added the account login/sign-up requirement in order to lay the groundwork for new features we’re bringing to the app that require user accounts. One of the key features that requires an account is Plus (which includes the ability to access your GoPro media anywhere). Additionally, our product team wants to better understand how people use our products across multiple products (i.e. Quik for mobile, Capture, Quik for desktop and our web products) and having a common account enables us to do that. By better understanding our users’ behavior, we can learn crucial information that allows us to provide richer customer support and build better products.

The introduction of login was rough and we’re aware of the frustration it’s caused. We’ve fixed some bugs that were causing users to get logged out while still working on fixing others. We also recently added Facebook login as an option to ease the process of creating accounts and are looking at other ways to make logging in even easier. We also recognize that we didn’t include an important accommodation to use Capture when you’re in a spot with no (or limited) internet data.

If you have ever signed in before, you should remain signed in (even if you’re in a remote area with no internet data), but if you got signed out or have never signed in, you were stuck and that is a suboptimal user experience.

We're excited to say that we’re solving for this offline use case with the next release of Capture that is due to release in February. When you have no data connection, or a limited data connection, you’ll have an option to bypass login and use Capture as normal until you get a solid internet connection again. That’s the basic description and more specific information about how the policy works will be posted in the GoPro support center when we release the new version of Capture.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to evolve our policies and better balance our business needs with creating a frictionless software experience for you, our most valuable users.

GoPro,

Make the login fully optional and you will be moving down the correct path, otherwise, you can keep your login and your cameras.  Until then, I will just use my new Virb.

So to the GoPro person who sent you that I ask how does being able to use FaceBook to login help, if I have no internet connection because I'm out in the middle of nowhere and have no phone or wireless connection to use at all. You know out using the **bleep** camera for what it was designed for.

Dear Mr GoPro. Please do what your customers are asking and simply get rid of the **bleep** mandatory login. Put all the bells an whistles you like into the app but as long as you have a mandatory login we can't use your app.

Ok, so if you are looking for information on how your products are used. Please ask your customers and read this:
GoPro ads feature numerous shots of outdoor action sport in remote locations. So that's where your customers would like to use your products. Like the session 5. As stated above the session cameras don't come with a display to see if your camera position is correct to make the best picture. So that's why your customers used to use your iPhone app Capture. As you need to login now this is no longer possible whiteout an internet connection. If you really want to make your product better then remove the login wall blocker and return it the way it was. This is the worst update you ever made and a big mistake. I'm thinking of returning the camera. As it has become useless this way. I'll get myself a Sony

Furthermore, you do realize that when connecting to the camera via wifi you do not have an active internet connection via wifi at the same time. So login does not work and you'll have to switch wifi settings again. A big flaw in the setup. So please just remove the login and let your customers choose if they want to login and send you data.

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

I just got upgraded to "Capture" last night, and when I went to use my camera this afternoon... DaFuq?  A quick google and I found this thread.

This is one of the most idiotic features I have ever seen, and I've been in IT for about 25 years.

I know GoPro is losing market share, but come on! Are you that desperate that you will hold users - who've paid good money for your product - hostage to your marketing dorks?   I was willing to put up with the juvenile "extreme brah" vibe that you cram into all your produts, but this is fuqing ridiculous.

GoPro finally released a bypass to the required login. The App update came out this morning. I did a test using airplane mode and indeed was able to use the camera app when I "purposely" logged out. I've never had to log out, it always did so automatically.

Sure hope GoPro really did listen. I loved GoPro, but they lost my trust multiple times through the release of Capture.

Let's hope they refocus on the customer again as shown with this update.

This is great. So if I turn off my cell data to the Capture app and never turn it back on, what part of the "full experience" will I lose out on?

I found out about this the hard way.  To say I'm pissed off is an understatement.  This new mess you've caused, along with the terrible tech support I encountered for the Omni I was using last month, tells me it's time to look for better alternatives.

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

Since I use GoPros for my business, I had not spent much time looking at lower cost alternatives, since they're pretty cheap (for what I do).  But, since this came up, I've been reading about GoPro alternatives.  The Yi 4K looks like a good bet.  (Ordered 2 last night.)  I'd stick with GoPro out of loyalty - buying from a Chinese company isn't my first choice, but practical considerations are important.  And, as a customer, I like to feel respected.  In this regard, GoPro is a failure.

Glad to find a solution, and releaved to see gopro listened to their fans.  Requiring login, internet connection, data mining, and any attempt to leverage customers are really foolish short sighted ideas.  If anyone makes a great product or service they won't have to force it on people, we will happily sign up for it.

jefft. Just to be clear are your saying if we have no internet coverage for more than 24 hours your still going to lock us out of using our cameras through the Capture App.

@Anonymous - You're not going to be locked out at all. The 24 hours is in regards to how often you're asked to log in. If you are without service, you can continue to skip the login.

That will work for me. The functionality is secure in any environment eigh or without service. I can live with an option to log in voluntary. The daily reminder is okay too since I have the option of not logging in if I choose. Thanks.

FWIW, I think it's even intrusive to to be required to login just to use the camera download app on my PC. Why DaFuq do I need to alert GoPro when I want to interact between my own PC and my own camera?

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

[ New ]

Just curious. What if I don't ever want to sign up for an account or sign into an account? I just want the phone to connect to the camera like it did with the old GoPro app that I'm still using because of this ridiculous boondoggle (ya I used that word) with trying to data mine my information.

FWIW, I still think that adding that login requirement to their app for a product that is often used in remote locations is one of the biggest screw ups a company has ever made. I shoot travel vids and will often attach my camera to the outside of my camper van. When I saw the ability to start and stop the camera remotely from my phone I was thrilled. I've always used GoPro but found it a nuisance to scrub through hours of footage looking for shots. Last year, on a drive through northern California I could not use the app because I had no service. Even when I had service I was given incorrect login messages time and time again. Thankfully someone had posted the old APK and I found functionality again but this Capture software was completely ruined, as was my love for GoPro, when they required an account to use MY OWN EFFING CAMERA. Give you heads a shake guys, there are other ways to make money. You're not Google.

Re: mandatory login after upgrade

I see you've deleted my post about this.  Wow, that's good support, if you don't like your uses opinions, just delete it.  GoPro no longer cares about their customers and their products, just their customers data for selling.  Turn a deaf ear to it.  Nearly half of the threads on the front page are about this.  The login requirement is total bs.
