The app will allow me to connect to my hero 5 black but when i try to log into gopro plus or try to update my camera it says i am not connected to the internet, even though i am.

Sorry for any troubles caused.
Please open the link on a computer web browser and run through the manual update on your camera - https://gopro.com/update/.
Once it's fully updated, you should be able to connect to the GoPro app and use it as normal.
