@misterl - It sounds like you're trying to connect the camera to your laptop. The instructions above are for connecting using a smartphone.
If you are trying to connect to a laptop, the camera needs to be connected and also turned on for the sync to begin. Also, you'll want to make sure that you've got Quik for Desktop installed on your computer. You can get it here: https://shop.gopro.com/softwareandapp/quik-%7C-desktop/Quik-Desktop.html
Quik for Desktop should recognize your camera and walk you through the steps to download the content from your camera to your laptop. If you have any issues though, please let us know.

YES THIS IS NOT WORKING.
GOPRO and QUIK are confilcting with Apple Photos, and the GoPro camera is crashing, requiring multiple restarts of the camera.
I worked on this for an hour before finally downloading my first full camera last night.
Today I had a 1/2 full camera and had the EXACT SAME problem.
GoPro likely has has really bad USB driver interfaces on MacOS. They are letting other apps grab their device and/or they are not recognizing their own device in QUIK.
I would completely agree with another user who said this camera was a lot of work compared to other devices, and that it is not plug and play.
I don't have a lot of USB devices on my Mac, and I am a skilled computer user. That it would take me an hour, including going through exercises such as resetting USB ports, restarting the Macbook Air, restarting the GoPro multiple times, witnessing the GoPro lock up crash freeze during USB connection is sad. It is indicative of bad software from GoPro. Perhaps GoPro should spend less on advertising and actually hire skilled developers who understand the nuances of USB, networking and OSX.

@misterl @stevenn52267 and @epicvista51606 - Are you able to import content if you insert the SD card into the computer (using an adapter)? I want to confirm that the content isn't corrupted on the card.
@epicvista51606 - Apple Photos can cause issues if you try to import the content using that program. Apple Photos will convert the videos to m4v files, which Quik may not recognize. Quik will recognize the original mp4 files.
If all else fails, our Support team at https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus will be glad to work with you all individually to get any issues resolved.
