Things that are broken, unusable or dysfunctional in iPhone GoPro App.

[ New ]

GoPro 8 and iPhone SE II 256GB iOS 13.5.1

Bugs:

  • The App crashes regularly. There is no obvious pattern, it just crashes.
  • The "Stickers" function does not appear to work correctly. Drag and drop of a sticker does not work, only re-selecting the sticker multiple times moves the location from corner to corner.
  • After adding stickers, the file appears black in the file list with no opening frame displayed for the file.
  • When downloading multiple files, if an out of space error or GoPro flat battery condition is generated, the iPhone App hangs and must be manually crashed
  • The "Highlight tag" on a video, a function with no obvious utility, is not reversible.

Dumb stuff:

  • When all files are selected for download, the download sequence is not chronological, possibly due to the bizarre naming convention.
  • The "file info" data does not have the Timestamp or File name, the two most relevant data points.
  • The editing icons bar has no >> indicator that more options exist than those visible

Missing stuff:

  • No obvious way to join "chapters". Long sequences of files which make up a single recording session are split at around 4GB. Joining HEVC files requires specialist software on a PC or Mac.  At a minimum, files could optionally be knitted back together on transfer from the camera to the app.

Usability of Package:

  • Forcing all activity via an iPhone is tedious, time consuming and extraordinarily frustrating for all but trivial social media videos.
  • Longer sequences with multiple large files must first be (a) transferred to the iPhone via WiFi (5 min/Gb) (b) edited, stickers added etc. (c) Exported to the iPhone Camera data area (glacial speed) (d) Transferred from the iPhone to a PC/Mac.
  • Downloading via WiFi can consume a whole battery charge for a medium sized SD

I will keep adding to this as more things emerge.

Dumb stuff:

  • After adding GPS stickers to all my videos, using select all, saving to the iPhone indicates that each 4GB file is estimated to take 25 minutes. The App must remain open in the foreground during this operation where the phone is unusable. So my 40GB will take over 4 hours.

Welcome to 2020, where the concept of background download is too advanced for GoPros team of kiddies and the clowns who manage them and signed off on this rubbish

Ed: I have zero respect for incompetent application design and execution, and this app is rubbish.

Dumb Stuff:

  • To explain the obvious, the previous point means that you need extra space on your iPhone in order to move them through the device. For reasons I cannot explain in my case, the 36GB of HEVC files used by the GoPro App creates only 20GB in the Gallery when copied there.

I bet you're asking why the GoPro App simply does not manipulate the files directly in the Gallery storage area and what happened to the HEVC files that caused them to shrink by 45% (nothing good I predict)?

I'd certainly like to know, but I am guessing no-one from GoPro bothers to come here who might answer those questions.

  • Sharing a video directly using the blue share icon apparently allows direct sharing to FarceBook and other targets, however before this can happen, yet another process "Preparing Clip" takes place. This seems to create yet another copy of the file somewhere, as it takes forever to complete before I can choose the target. Airdrop or a cloud service would seem to be the viable options. This is yet another time and battery consuming option. It is also "1 file at a time" and crashes the app pretty consistently.

I have now reviewed what the GoPro App did to the files that were saved to the pictures gallery on the iPhone, and as expected they are significantly altered during the process.

Unfortunately I do not have a Cloud Service or a way to AirDrop a file, so I do not know if these transfer modes are alse lossy.

Hello @philipl3616

We have recently released an update for the GoPro app both on Android and iOS.

Please make sure to restart your phone before pairing it with the camera again.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks!

Ej

Hi @philipl3616

Let me answer to what I can

The App crashes regularly. There is no obvious pattern, it just crashes.

> When the app is crashing you can make sure that we receive the logs.
Right after the app crashes - Open App again, go to Settings / Support / Send Feedback. There you can write a detailed explanation of what happened and it will attach the crash logs to your email.

The "Stickers" function does not appear to work correctly. Drag and drop of a sticker does not work, only re-selecting the sticker multiple times moves the location from corner to corner.

> this will be done in the future. It requires work on the Engine. It's on the roadmap and will be implemented

After adding stickers, the file appears black in the file list with no opening frame displayed for the file.

> I do not reproduce this on my. I took a video, added the GoPro Logo. Saved. I have a new video with the GoPro logo save in my App Galery. We can discuss on this if you have a bug.

When downloading multiple files, if an out of space error or GoPro flat battery condition is generated, the iPhone App hangs and must be manually crashed

> when the app crashes we get the logs so we can trace them back

The "Highlight tag" on a video, a function with no obvious utility, is not reversible.
> True. You can add HiLights in single clip editing -> which then you will find back on this video when doing a multi clip editing. However you can't remove them from there (it puts an orange dot in the player), you can only remove them once in multi clip editing.

When all files are selected for download, the download sequence is not chronological, possibly due to the bizarre naming convention.

> GoPro App download the fastest so smalles media first - to my understanding.

The "file info" data does not have the Timestamp or File name, the two most relevant data points.

> GoPro App Android has both Timestamp and File name, so yes it would make sense to have it on iOS as well. I will see about adding that to our backlog.

The editing icons bar has no >> indicator that more options exist than those visible

> Are you saying when you are in multi-clip editing mode and you are editing a video for ex? You don't see that you can scroll to the right to the other options?

Chaptering - don't have the answer right now

What about GoPro Player on Mac?

@philipl3616

There's a bug report open on the fact that FPS is 30fps instead of 60fps when making a multi-clip edit. So this will be fixed.

This is what it looks like. I previously posted the file specs.
