Any ideas what would cause this issue, even though the OnePlus 6 is in the list of supported devices?

What firmware version is your Fusion on?
Is your GoPro App up to date?
When pairing the camera, try selecting HERO7/6 Black for the model.
See if this completes the pairing process.

Thank you for your reply.
I tried selecting the device as Hero 7, and it paired. My concern was would I be able to use overcapture if I paired it as Hero7, looks like its possible to do it.
But how does the firmware update work in this case? Will I get relevant updates for the Fusion even though I select the device as Hero7 whilr pairing?

It should work.
If you notice, your camera is listed correctly.
The app recognizes that you have connected a Fusion camera even if a different model was selected.
Feel free to post back if something comes up.

The gpro fusion cannot connect to my one plus 6t. Everythig is uptodate.
My app recognise the fusion however as soon as i hit ok to connect, the app immediatky respond it cannot connect to your fusion since the phone (onr plus 6t) is not compatibel..
This is really very frustating!

My fusion is on latest beta ver 2. My app is 5.2.2.
It recognises that the camera as fusion but as soon as i click connect, it says as it premeditated.. without any attampt to connect that "your phone can't support fusion .......etc..
I tried the workaround by pretending that this hero black and it connected.
Question - Why should I do a workaround?
