Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

[ New ]

Brand new Hero 6 owner here. I too am very surprised that GoPro has not delt with this issue. My Galaxy S7 internal storage is limited from all my apps. However, my 128gig SD card is plenty empty but can't get GoPro app to save files directly to it. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

My roundabout solution (after deleting as many apps as I could to free up internal storage space) is to save as many videos as I can to my phone. Once saved go into file manager and then manually move the videos from internal storage DCIM file to SD card.

Once moved over, I keep doing that until all my files are moved. It's worked so far but there will definately come a time when a long video will be too large.

I'm no programmer but I can't see having even a "save too" option when downloading files even if the default option has to be to internal for the app to work....

Should this not be a priority GoPro??

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

[ New ]

Just purchases my GoPro... Great camera + smartphone apps = perfect combination to edit and share content on-the-go... I thought,... because I soon found out I was so wrong! Appartently the app is unable to save files to the SD card of the android phone; since the internal phone memory is filled with apps there is no space for high resolution video. While 60GB free on my SD card, the GoPro app refuses to transfer the video because of "Not enough space".

This is an essential feature, without it, it renders the GoPro pretty useless as an on-the-go and user friendly compagnion of a smartphone. This is a shame for a premium product and I'm very dissapointed by this, just like all the others in this forum. And searching the web it's pretty clear we are far from the only ones.

If someone at GoPro is reading this; this question is open for almost a year now; even if it's a "no", please provide an official reply to this. And don't just say "we will pass it to the development team"; pass it to the marketing and product management team of GoPro, because this is costing you customers and your reputation!

Hello @Anonymous,

The GoPro App uses internal memory on the device and cannot be set (even by default) to save to an SD card. In order to save internal device memory, you can opt to move the media files to the SD card once they have been imported to your device.

Thanks,
Marius

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

@mariustanya we all know this and we're heavily complaining about the lack of this functionality.. how many other posts do you need to add the possibility to save into SD direclty?

Let's take the most sold Andorid Smaartphones:

  1. they have on AVG 16-32gb
  2. 10gb occupied by Android
  3. 5gb by another idiot App called Whatsapp that is not able as well to save into SD
  4. 5 gb by personal files, pictures, videos...

how do you propose to transfer 5-10GB videos 4k from GOPRO?

It's insane that an app that creates large files as GOPRO hasn't a flexibility to manage the memories! Ridicuolous!

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

Hi @mariustanya

We all know that we can transfer the videos onto our SD cards once they've been loaded onto the phone memory. That is not the issue.

The issue is...

Most phones don't have much internal memory as that is taken up by Apps. So loading a big video onto our phone can be an issue and if we move it to our SD card then Quik can no longer access it so it renders the Quik app useless

Please have a good read of the comments made by your users to get an understanding of the true issue here.

What we want is...

1. To be able to load videos directly from the camera to our external SD Card

2. Quik to be able to access our external SD cards so we can make Quik Vids

Kind regards,

Troy

Gopro just needs to hire some competent programmers or maybe just someone who cares!
Love the camera, but the app and customer service are sub standard.

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

It's not a great work-around, but here's how I was able to make videos with Quik, while having limited space on my internal phone memory.

1. On the physical GoPro4 camera, use the native clip editor which allows you to select a 5, 15, or 30 second clip to duplicate into a new, much smaller file.
2. Upload those smaller 'best of' highlight clips to your phone internal memory.
3. Then use the Quik app to compile those short clips into your short mini movie.

**This route still requires free space on your built in phone memory, however it's a lot less space needed when compared to downloading the original full length clips. Maybe this can help someone out there until GoPro gets their act together. Good lighting, and good luck!

Owner of 2 original Hero and 1 Hero3. Just bought a Hero6 Black and thanks to this incompetent and (not) designed feature of being unable to store video directly to a SD card, the Android software is useless to me. Just capture video and copy the files to my desktop to edit. Just like I have been doing for many, many years.  And to make it better, GOPRO IS NOT LISTENING. It's not a phone problem, it's a GoPro problem, and they don't care. They put more effort into the packaging then they did into the software and its' a shame. Maybe when they were a $80/share company they cared. But now, at $5/share, this is what WE get.

Thanks for advertising a feature set that the end user can't really use. You got me on this one, and I will do my best to tell everyone to stay away until it is fixed.

Awesome support. Not.

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

Judging from some of the new features in GoPro's support apps (e.g. Quick), they love iPhone and could care less about Android.  Also, I'm fairly certain that no one from GoPro reads these forums.  I posted in this thread a year ago...there has been no useful response, no acknowledgement of the deficiency in their app, and no scheduling of the feature for an upcoming release.  I've given up.  Quick is fine for watching video still on the camera, but beyond that, for Android users, Quick is utterly useless.

Initial post of the storage issue with the Gopro app was over a year ago. Still no fix. I'm very disapported with my Gopro Hero 5 Session purchase because the only features that can be used with the app are the settings. No file transfer nor editing features can be used even when I have 64Gb of memory on my phone. Please test and fix the storage location problem with the app. Over 80% of the world market uses Android.

Same issue here. Ive got several 100 GBSs worth of footage and only 32GB of space on my Samsung Tab S3. Im not even going to repeat What the problem is, cause it's been mentioned several times in this thread. Suffice to say its a MAJOR issue.

I Suspect Gopro wants to force their customers to migrate to the "Cloud" so they can boost their income with the subscription fees.

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

I have an Android (Samsung Galaxy S9)
Here's what I found to resolve this as desired!
Open Settings
Then (you need to click 7 times on) About Phone
That enables Developer Mode
Open Developer Mode, scroll down to the end.
Click on Force allow apps on external.
See that it is enabled with the slide to the right side!
This allowed me to do the following.
Open Settings> Apps Click on GoPro.
Click Storage, click Change, NOW it presents the option to make the storage location the SD card, which means moving the App and files to the SD!
REALLY WORKED FINE FOR ME, SO PLEASE TRY IT!

Even with the developer mode workaround and moving app and its data to external SD and clearing data and cache and starting from scratch, GoPro will STILL create its media folder on the internal memory.

HOW STUPID CAN ONE BE? FOR MULTIPLE YEARS?? The Android App is effectively useless.

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

Hello @mrperes. The GoPro App still saves to the internal phone memory. If you have the latest/current version of the app installed, your GoPro media is now saved directly to the GoPro App. This makes it easier to manage, edit, and share your footage. You have the option to save the media to your device once the media have been imported to the app - this eventually allows you to access the media directly from the phone. Here's how.

Also see if the video files that cannot be found or viewed have supported resolutions for copy and share. Check out Supported Resolutions for Copy and Share in the GoPro App .

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

Thank you for the reply @mariustanya, however your suggestion does NOT eliminate the problem. The files can be transferred to the card however they will be duplicated while the originals are still stored in the app. With this said and despite all my attempts, I still cannot identify which are still left to transferred as once I pass them to the phone according to your guidelines and since the phone is quite full, the app crashes and still no solution in sight.

Sincerely your app sucks and you are not even willing to find solutions for cosecutevely reported problems for (over or almost) a year already and the competition is getting fierce. Just yesterday and just to remind you, dji launched an action cam and their app despite of possible flaws at least is working much better as I currently use some devices from them as well. You should listen to your crowd if you don't want them to leave you.

I sincerely hope the DJI OSMO Action Cam is the GoPro killer.
I stopped buying GoPro's with their Hero 5 black after getting inferior and robotic response support for any issues I had with it. Even if DJI ends up putting the osmo action camera on their Dusty shelf after a few months it would still be worth it just to see them make GoPro finally wake up.
Dreaming of the GoPro killer... hope the osmo action camera is it just to see GoPro become the best again like they were before the Hero 5 black.

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

GoPro guys, what is it about all these requests that you still don't understand?!?!?!

It's quite simple really...

  • The app stores all files directly to the device memory which usually fills it!!
  • With previous app versions, you could at least see a 'GoPro' folder in the gallery and move files to the SD card manually. This has gone!
  • So, when you don't want to use the GoPro app on the phone, but actually just need to access some files, where the f#!k are they?!?!?!
  • i.e after pulling in not much from my GoPro, I now have 494MB of 25GB free. The GoPro content was about 2GB so now I can't export them to my gallery as there isn't enough room to have them there twice. And why would I want that?!?

JUST ADD THE STOREAGE LOCATION OPTION TO THE APP SO WE CAN CHOOSE DS CARD FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

I found a bunch of files in the "go pro-exports" folder that was automatically created in my "pictures" folder on my phone's internal storage after I imported them into the app from the Go Pro and edited them and saved them to the device. They were still not visible in Gallery or anywhere on the phone, only on the app itself. I then cut and pasted the files from my phone (Go Pro Exports) into a permanent folder on my computer. I noticed that the phone's internal storage memory was still max'd out and couldn't figure out why as I had removed everything from the Go Pro Exports folder. After searching litterally every folder with no results I then just deleted them from within the app itself and that solved the internal storage problem. As everyone said, it'd be nice if Go Pro could actually create a folder rather than having all the files hidden in the app itself with no folder to reference. I also could not find anywhere in settings to adjust the default storage location on the app. Not sure if I'm missing something?

Please, how could you release the app without this option, knowing how much memory space is used by videos. There had to be at least one employee that brought this up in a meeting???

Look.

It is not about not being able to do it. It is about not wanting to do it.

YOU simply don't want to do it!

This issue has been raised for many years now. and you have refused to do something about it.

Look, a simple implementation by Netflix. There are other apps that are doing it also. but you simply don't want to listen to your customers!

haha i agree!! bad programming! My android has 64gb internal memory and a 128gb sd card and I have storage set to save to SD card but yet everytime i save media to the app ALL my internal memory gets taken up and I can't so much as render a video anymore because the app keeps crashing due to lack of memory space. This is a mobile phone app and NOT a full fledged computer app but I don't think the developers kept that in mind!

Re: GoPro Apps Storage Selection on Android

The reason for no action from gopro is very simple. They are trying to make all of us to use gopro plus £4.99/m. I don't have it but this issue makes me think about getting it which means gopro plan is half way done. Also they can not add storage selection to next update because they will risk losing the existing subscriptions on gopro plus because if you can easily save it on sd card then there is no need for gopro cloud.

It's a shame because it's a simple thing and brand like this should sort this out considering the amount of money gopro users are constantly spending on new kit.
