Why is Quik Desktop so different from the Quik Mobile App?

Just getting started with the Quik mobile app - it's great! I love that there are many template options with interesting transitions and lots of music to choose from. It's really convenient to have the app do most of the work and I just fine tune the final cut...
...but here's the thing - it absolutely crushes the battery and processor on my phone. If I try to pull in more than 5 clips from my Hero 6 Black it's almost completely unusable. I can't actually edit the video if the playback is sputtering and freezing on one frame for several seconds. Yes, I've tried using the app while charging - that solves the battery drain issue, but not the processing/playback/editing issue.
So I installed the desktop version since my laptop has a lot more horsepower, and was disappointed to find out that the it doesn't have any of the cool features that make the mobile app great. No templates, limited music selection (unless you subscribe to Plus) and I can't even manually insert those transition effects... they're just nowhere to be found.
What's the deal with that? Is the desktop app still in development? If not I'll probably just uninstall because it's not "quik" at all. And doesn't even have the basic editing features of something like Premiere, Camtasia... even Windows Movie Maker has more editing features! It's kind of a drag to find out that all the cool stuff in Quik is exclusive to the device that has a much harder time editing videos. If anything, it should be the other way. Ideally, I would have the same features on both versions (same name, completely different capabilities).
Almost forgot the biggest difference - Quik Desktop doesn't allow me to import any media that wasn't captured with my GoPro camera, but the mobile app is totally fine with outside media. What gives???
Please let me know what the plan is for Quik desktop. At the moment, using either version of the app leaves that sick edit I'm looking for just outside my grasp. Thanks!
