It is GoPro's fault. I doesn't need to connect to the Internet for a person to import their footage and modify them. Although the solutions above regard one occassional a Mac solution, it also affects PCs - it's on their server-side.

open your 'hosts' file in terminal, using sudo. Its in    /private/etc/

add a new line following any lines that are there

127.0.0.1       localhost

writeout/save, exit.   quit the Qik app and try again.  Worked for me.
