I'm having the same issue with this software constantly being unresponsive and SUPER slow. All I want to do is overly the GPS data in my video and I can't. Anyone have alternative software suggestion that can do this for me?
My system is pretty respectable.
-ASUS GTX 1080TI Strix GPU
-16GB DDR4 Memory
-Windows 10 with all updates and latest drivers.

RaceRender is easier and had more options, but the free version limits you to five minute videos. Dashware is GoPro's software, but can be more difficult.
Quik should win fine, especially if you are just using the trim function to add GPS overlay.
I wouldn't use Quik for making videos (mobile app is good though). If you have an iOS mobile device you can add GPS overlay stickers with the GoPro app.
After applying the GPS overlay with either Quik, RaceRender, Dashware, or the GoPro mobile app (on iOS) you can combine and edit your videos with any of these free editors:
VSDC on Windows- http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor/download.
DaVinci Resolve https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve
i have tried all the fixes and reinstalles, and its not better, same as everyone else i run a monster computer that can do this sort of stuff in its sleep, i already run pro editing software and cad software and even that software can render ok on my machine but the go pro just hangs or crashes,
ive now just given up with go pro software and moved over to cyberlink for editing gopro footage
all very frustrating, time consuming and disapointing gopro
