So this has wasted a fair bit of time, but the solution is to disable your graphics card..... GO Figure GO(not so) Pro. If I do that it works. Otherwise it crashes.
If you still have issue do a manual update on the camara as I was also having trouble with the SD card corrupting (not 1 card, several) and so far so good that fixed it. All in all rather disapointing from a premium product but at least its all working, for now....

On all the promotion video's of GoPro you guys make it look easy, but the reality is completely different, first, when you buy a GoPro you'll need a huge amount of patience. second, allow for forking out big bucks to get your computer up to scratch to run the gopro software. Third, deal with the frustration and bug fixes, crashing software etc. Sorry guys would be nice to see your shares going up again.....

I was having the same issue and my have resolved it, at least on my case. Quik would crash every time i would open files in Create Mode. What I finally realized, by reading through all these forums, is that Studio is not a stand alone app anymore. I finally uninstalled Studio and and Quik and re-installed just Quik. That seemed to do he trick! I guess my system was holding on to some of the old Studio files. I did use Revo uninstaller's hunter mode to make sure all of the old Studio files were gone. Studio wasn't listed as a program in the Windows uninstaller. Now only if they could mirror the the desktop version to the mobile version of Quik.

I read several aticles and nothing could make the Quik works! Changed compatibility mode, installed and uninstalled the applicationa many times, .netframework, c++ redistributable, updated windows, graphics driver etc etc etc... nothing seems to solve it. Anyone else?
