Quik just keeps crashing Windows 10

[ New ]
I have a new computer which runs Windows 10. I can’t edit any of my gopro footage. While the files imported (eventually, after crashing multiple times), every time I open ‘create’ the program just crashes. It’s so frustrating. I can’t understand why this is so hard!

Hello, @foggyriver47752. If Quik fails to launch on your computer, these troubleshooting steps might help. If Quik launches and crashes when opening a media, it could be due to your computer running multiple graphics cards, and Quik for desktop is prioritizing the high-performance NVIDIA or AMD card. We have a solution that you can try. Hope these help!

Hi @luisxiv,

Have you tried running it on compatibility mode or run with graphics processor?

Just right click on the app icon and choose Run with Graphics Processor or Run in Compatibility Mode.

Please let us know if that will work.

That's odd @luisxiv

Can you try to create a new Local Account on your computer?

(Just Use Local account - No Microsoft Account or Email Address)

If ever it's working on Local account there might be something wrong on your configuration.

If it's working on your local account please run SFC Scan or DISM on your Computer you may also try to remove temp files or unnecessary files .

But I would not suggest to do that if you don't have an idea about those.
It would be best to contact Microsoft Support via phone or chat.

They can assist you on how to do that or ask if it is really needed.

I fixed it in windows settings, going to System --> Screen --> Graphics Configuration (latest option)

Added GoPro Quik.exe and set it to energy saving GPU (Intel HD Graphics).

Options might not be accurate, as I am translating from spanish...

Hope it helps!

Re: Quik just keeps crashing Windows 10

There is clearly an issue going on with desktop users no matter the computer specs. I have the same issues, I can start creating in create mode, but the app itself starts to hang and ultimately makes me force close it.

specs arent the issue and that 10 step "fix" does not work either.. this is an issue with the software and the way it has all the videos rendering for preview on the left pane during create mode. and if i start playing the video it tries to "pre-render" the other videos in the sequence and just starts lagging out then crashing.

Just chiming in to say I had the same problem, potatocaster's solution worked for me. Think it might be because Quik doesn't like my GeForce MX150.

Re: Quik just keeps crashing Windows 10

I don't use the Quik desktop app for making videos, but I do use the Quik mobile app frequently. If you like Quik style videos, I strongly suggest using the mobile app. It has way more options, features, and is much more stable. For desktop editing, I use Premiere Pro, but there are many free options as well. If you don't already have a desktop editor (BTW, Windows still has a version of Movie maker built into Windows 10 but it's hidden in the pictures viewer), then you might want to try one of these:
VSDC on Windows- http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor/download.
DaVinci Resolve https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve
VideoProc https://www.videoproc.com/
HitFilmExpress https://hitfilm.com/express
ShotCut https://shotcut.org/download/
Lightworks http://www.lwks.com/
Avidemux http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
Blender https://www.blender.org/download/
EZvid http://www.ezvid.com/download
VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/
Fusion https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion/motiongraphics

Re: Quik just keeps crashing Windows 10

[ New ]

Has anyone found a realiable resolution to the Win10 Quik Desktop crashes?  I have been fighting this issue for months, and I even purchased a new $4K editing station with the latest everything (e.g. RTX2070, i7-9700K, 64GB RAM, SSD's, etc).  BTW... Quik still says that my machine doesn't support HEVC... huh?

All of the work-arounds for Quik fail immediately or eventually, and the only short-term resolution is to uninstall and reinstall the Quik Desktop app... this works for a while until I have to repeat the vicious cycle.  I can edit the raw camera footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, but the only way to get the gauges is via the Quik app.  GoPro only offers this app for managing their cameras, and they force you to run Win10... is there any intention of fixing these glaring problems with the software?

My Hero 8 just arrived and I was trying to edit my first video and... the software won't work.

So I searched for a solution, and here and I tryed all your suggestions but with no results.

It's really upsetting me...

GoPro should be the market leader and they aren't even able to fix a problem in their desktop editing software. Ok, it's a free additional software and the program itself isn't their core business, but com'on guys...

The software should work with one, two or even with a stack of video cards. Are you kidding?!

That's ridiculous! Really!

I second the comment from green range. I have wasted my morning trying to troublshoot this issue. The GoPro support comments are totally shirking the real issue, which is the GoPro software. I have the top performing Microsoft Surfacebook 2, and its a graphics spec powerhouse. There should be no issue due to my system here. I also changed the settings for the card to be used in powersaving mode, as suggested from the spanish gent. This did not prevent the lagging and crashing when even simpky trying to watch media. To be frank, this is pitiful GoPro.

Being that this is a member to member support forum, it doesn't really do any good to just post complaints.  Yes, the Quik Desktop software is not the greatest when it comes to editing.  I actually don't have any issues with my two laptops (i7-7700HQ 32GB DDR4 RAM NVIDIA GTX 1050ti SSD & i7-9700k 16GB DDR4 RAME NVIDIA RTX 2060 SSD); however, I know that plenty of people do experience issues.  In either case, it's not a great editor and there are plenty of better solutions out there, for FREE.  Rumor is that GoPro is working on a new desktop app.  Personally, I think it's a waste of resources.  They shouldn't be providing any desktop software.  There are too many free software alternatives being provided by actual software editing companies.  Instead, they should, in my opinion, be keeping their limited resources (GoPro is NOT a large company) focused on the mobile app and providing web based solutions.

Ok, I have the same problem as everyone on this group chat, I've gone through almost every post on Gopro, what I did find is that 4k is a huge problem to edit, I used 1080p and 2.7 all 60 f/s, and I had no issue, but once I tried 4k, thats it my PC crashed.!
My little bit of info.!

Also, please make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.

This worked great!

By running power saving it runs the Intel UHD Graphics 620 instead of the Radeon 530 which was meant to be the better performing card.

Re: Quik just keeps crashing Windows 10

[ New ]
Quik Desktop app is buggy and will probably be phased out or have an entire overhaul soon. You don't need it. The GoPro mobile app is much better at making Quik Stories, uploads to GoPro Plus faster, allows you to update camera firmware, applies GPS stickers more efficiently, and overall just works better.

Quik Desktop was designed for HERO5. It hasn't had an update in over a year and has never really worked great on Windows PC.

If you don't want to use the mobile app, you still don't need Quik. Just like with most cameras, you can just use Windows Explorer and copy the files to your PC. Updates can be done via manual update (which tends to work better anyway), and you can set your camera up to auto upload to Gotti GoPro Plus when it's charging. For editing, there are plenty of free video editors like DaVinci Resolve, HitFilm, Shotcut, VSDC, VideoProc..... And for GPS you can extract data using this member created tool https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/free/
and then use RaceRender, Virb Edit, Dashware, Adobe After Effects,....

In other words, just stop using Quik Desktop.

No point in debating what you should or shouldn't have to do or what GoPro should've/could've done. GoPro is not a large company. Global brand, yes. But, they have limited resources, Especially when it comes to desktop software. They have been losing money for years, the CEO salary has been $1 for several years and they are working with stripped down bare bones departments. The few GoPro software engineers are very dedicated, hard working, and actually do care deeply about your experience. However, GoPro is not a software company. They are a camera company. Like most camera companies, software is second and a bonus add on if they provide it.

After doing years of market research, GoPro found that the vast majority of users wanted mobile software solutions. Of course the older generations don't understand this, but it turns out most people recording with a GoPro want to edit and share their media from their phone. For those that prefer desktop editing, it turns out that most people use Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie. With this in mind, it makes sense that GoPro has put the Quik Desktop app below the mobile app and Max 360 editor.

Re: Quik just keeps crashing Windows 10

woah, great post.

i completely understand that hero3 or quik isn't in gopro projects anymore. perfect, just dismiss that out.
if company isn't doing it, ok im' feeling ok to report issues and problems.

GoPro is a small company? i like them, but.. is that really important?

in 2020 you can't be just a "camera" company.
you can have the best videos in the world, but if you can't manage them.. you're out!
that's what customers ask.

going back to topic, using quik for android is a good idea but you know, smartphones lack in GB for large videos and they're not good for just transfering. that's why we still need a PC.

you're right. the best is manually uploading with file explorer.
and that's a pain in the mass.
