QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

I've had about three shoot days over the last week or so.  The first I noticed that about half of my files were missing.  I thought "shame on me, I must have deleted them before copying all of it".   The second time I thought, "geeze, that's a lot of missing/corrupt files SD card must be bad."  The last time I specifically watched as QUIK copied only about 11 of my 29 files.  Then pulled up the ingest location to see there were only 11 files, 2 of which were corrupt, and the rest of them were completely missing.

They were also missing from my SD Card because QUIK erased them completely.  I've just gotten off the phone with GoPro support.  They have NO IDEA why QUIK would be doing this.

This is a SERIOUS issue if you rely on your camera.  If you rely on the tool to do a job and capture an event, just to get back and have the software corrupt or delete and format the card.

I'm uninstalling QUIK and trying again today to see if I can capture a full day's worth of footage and come back to the computer to verify that it is infact QUIK doing this.  This will be my second time testing this because I did it last night when copying off my Hero5 Session noticing it was misisng a lot of footage, and then trying to copy off my HERO4 SIlver after uninstalling and reinstalling QUIK.

I wonder why GoPro's stock is tanking............

Hello Moderator.  This is NOT an issue with GOPRO APPS FOR MOBILE.   This is an ISSUE with THREE of my cameras having files deleted from them when connecting them to the computer.

PLEASE REVIEW AND RECATEGORIZE.  Thanks.

@Anonymous - Quik for Desktop will delete files off of your camera after you've imported the files to Quik for Desktop if that's an option that you have selected (the default is to ask if you want to delete the files after each import).

To adjust those settings, connect your camera to your computer and open Quik. Click on your camera under the "Connected Devices" section. Next to the image of the camera, you'll see a gear/settings icon.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 4.54.43 PM.png

On the settings screen that pops up, you'll want to make sure that the second checkbox near the bottom of the window that says "Automatically delete files from camera after importing" is unchecked.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

I have had the same issue. Quik for Mac initially reported there were no files on my GoPro (after a full day's shooting), then after reconnecting it reported 10 files, downloaded 1, and erased the rest. I have now disabled the automatic deletion function but I want to recover the footage from today! Any suggestions?

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

Same thing happened to me today: Only 289 of 1292 timelapse photos imported but Quik deleted EVERYTHING form my SD card... Nothing in trash, nothing on computer :-( One time only event that cannot be reshot!

This is the third time I try to post this so hopefully it works this time. I tried to post a sceen grab but it was blocked.

I am very pissed off dissapointed in GoPro.

Any solutions?

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

@Anonymous - Quik should only delete files if you select the option to delete the files automatically (see image above) or manually select to delete the files after the import. Let us know if the next import goes through completely. If not, can you confirm that all of the files are still on the SD card?

The issue I want to eliminate with this is if the files were on the SD card in the first place, or if some of the files were corrupted, which can keep them from being imported into Quik.

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

Hi Jeff

In my case the option to delete files was selected; however Quik deleted the files without them having been downloaded. The files (which I had previously been able to stream to and preview via the Capture iPhone app, suggesting they were not corrupted) are no longer on the SD. I have sought the advice of a data recovery specialist.

I am likewise very disappointed with GoPro.

@Anonymous - Just FYI that the files you preview on the apps are often the mobile-friendly versions, not the full versions, so it's not always an indicator. I hope you are able to recover the files.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

Hi Jeff,

The issue is not with the user, it's with the software. The "delete files after import" option was checked but Quik deleted the media before completing the import. Judging by what I have been reading on the interwebs, many users are having the same issue.

For the price of $89, I purchased data recovery software and was able to recover the files from the SD card. It is a very steep price to pay for using GoPro's software as this is a very basic and fundamental feature that should always be bug free.

Best,

Marc

@jefft i have not been able to recover the files; it seems the data recovery specialists wish to charge exorbitantly.

I would settle for mobile-friendly files. Do you have any suggestions on how I might be able to recover them?

Hi Gantnerd,

I used the free versions of Disk Drill and VirtualLab Data Recovery to determine that the files were recoverable. However, in order to actually recover the files, you need to pay for the full versions of these programs. I opted to purchase Disk Drill 3 and was able to recover all of my files.

Good Luck

This has happened to us too.  It's a devastting problem - trip of "lifetime gone in a blink of an eye.  GoPro support has nothing to offer to help in trying to recover data. So very very disappointed in goPro.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

Exact same issue.  Quik imports the images.  Preview in "Media" shows a timelapse with 1640 images.  Preview won't work in Quik.  Open with Studio, and half of the images play.  Check folder, only 745 show up.  No files on the SD card.

**Edit** - Might have found part of the issue -

Timelapse went overnight.  Files from the first day are in a folder with yesterday's date:

....Pictures\GoPro\2017-04-02\HERO4 Session 1\Time Lapse 1

Files from the second day are in a folder with today's date, ALSO with subfolder "TimeLapse1"

...Pictures\GoPro\2017-04-03\HERO4 Session 1\Time Lapse 1

Quik has the total number of files showing in a preview timelapse (1640) - but that won't play in quik.  Each subfolder has part of the files - 745 in the first day, 895 in the second day.

I'll try combining them...

***AND IT'S WORKING***

I put the files from day 2 into the day 1 subfolder... number sequence lined up... and it's working fine now!

OK.  So, maybe it will help somebody. Check your download folders and see if it's splitting your timelapses over days and screwing up the metada vs what's in what folder.

Hope it helps somebody!

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

I will chime in and confirm this is a problem for me as well. A couple times in the past, I've noticed/remembered specific video shots and timelapses that are missing after Quik import, and wondered if I just screwed something up. I'm pretty tech saavy, so after a few of these missing files I knew something was up with the app.

This weekend I filmed and maxed out a partially full 32 GB card with both video and timelapse shots. Quik claimed to import the files and gave a confirmation of successful import. The footage never appeared in Quik or on my laptop... and it is now gone from my camera as well. It's safe to say that I won't be using Quik ever again. Thankfully I also have some of this weekend's video footage on my mobile phone, but not enough to make the nice edit I was hoping to produce.

Be sure that 'delete files after import' is not checked

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

I appreciate that advice, and I can't say I'm 100% certain if that was checked or not on my last (and final try with Quik) import attempt. I don't see that option in the general import preferences in Quik to look back and see what it was set to. Maybe for posterity sake, I'll shoot a quick video and time-lapse test to see if I come across that option and determine if it makes the files actually download to my computer.

My biggest grievance is that even if it was going to delete after the import based on that setting being checked, that the app should actually import first and confirm the files are on disc (Import somewhere at least... even to a temp directory or something) before deleting.  As a software developer working within a similar paradigm, we always verify we have a successful file transfer before any termination or clean-up code is executed. This isn't a new practice, but it seems to be something GoPro has been missing out on... at least based on my experience and a few others in this thread.

As a final kick in the junk. I got a fairly standard pop-up survey request from this forum. I actually took the time to complete it honestly and I wrote comments about my frustrations. When I submitted the survey, it threw some sort of 500 level error and said I needed to login again! I'm LOL'ing that I can't report a bug in your system because your website is so buggy. I won't be spending any more money on a new GoPro anytime soon until I'm sure they have got things back on track.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

This just happened to me as well. After two weeks shooting my family holiday in Japan [from Australia], I arrived home excited to get to work editing my footage. I plugged in to let Quik do it's thing, and upon completion I have only 6 of 14 days worth of my effort to use.

I've now spent more money buying data recovery software [$120USD] to find the mossing files [win!] only to find that they are corrupted and Quik/GPStudio won't play them.

I'm really disappointed in my GoPro/Quik's performance after putting som much time, effort & money into buying my equipmant, travelling and devoting time on my family holiday to shooting rather than looking.....only to lose two-thirds of the footage to a glitch in the Quik program on the day I arrive home.

I'm going to look at a different action camera next time. I don't want to lose anymore of the memories of my kids growing up because the software isn't up to requirement.

Disappointing.

The files should still be on the SD card unless you deleted them within Quik after the import. You can plug the SD card into the computer using a card adapter and see which files are on the card itself.

I've recovered the files Jeff. The issue I have now is that they seem to be corrupted and won't play on Quik, Studio or even Quiktime on my Mac. I need to figure out how to repair them now..if that's even possible.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

Exactly the same issue.

Today I filmed a rare seahouse, suspected to have left the conservation area in our lagoon.

I returned, used Quik and the footage wasn't there.. the notifcations say 33 of 62 videos imported, immediately followed by 62 videos deleted.

How DARE you.

How DARE you design and release software, that knowingly deletes videos that haven't been imported.

HOW DARE YOU.

Any good feelings I had about GoPro, their products and services have been wiped out. What an appalling, stupid mistake. I cannot believe you are so grossly incompetent to internationally ship such a wretched, wicked, useless piece of software.

This footage was valuable. It's now gone. You should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves.

OMG this also just happened to me minutes ago. I shot several dozen short clips today. Came home, plugged in the USB reader with my SD Card in it, and Quik downloaded and then deleted within seconds. They are not on the Quik media folders, not in the GoPro folders, and not in the trash. What the hell..... It's really shocking how crappy this camera is when the world is full of very decent cameras at a fraction of the price. Amazing. I have no idea what to do.

Hey, I can recommend the excellent RecoverGoPro software (conventional disk recovery doesn't work); although it's Windows-only, so I had to install Windows on a Boot Camp.

I've disabled 'delete after import', but am really shocked at how little GoPro care about this issue.

Their Twitter feed just fobbed me off repeatedly, continually telling me to turn off 'delete after import'; while refusing to acknowledge there is a fault with the feature, which requires fixing.

The same thing is happening to me right now and I am DEVESTATED!! I spent SO MUCH time vlogging and capturing my recent vaction and now my files are NOWHERE to be found!! I've been using the gopro desktop app and gopro studio for at least a year now to save and create videos. My media has been stored this entire time. However, for some reason not one video from my recent trip or any other adventure is there anymore. I'M PISSED! And also very sad. I'm sitting here crying. I thought GoPro was better than this but this experience is making me want to not buy the new hero 5 (which I was planning on doing) if this is how little they really care. Forget you GoPro. You just lost a customer.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

Yea DEFINATELY disable "delete after import" box when using Quik.

Now, Quik imports media for me but it doesn't show up in Quik in recently added or media files.  In fact, there are no files there.

I need to open Finder then the folders and view them in QuickTime....which is sad because QuickTime is just a media viewer and not an editor.

I have tried to "add files" and have tried to fiddle with the folder locations (which I never changed to begin with) to get the files to show up but to no avail.  It's really shocking to me how poor this actually is and with a brand trying to maintain such a high profile.

Two other sad notes of interest:

1. I've never seen a GoPro response to any of the posts on this support forum.....  And if you're like me, you will have noticed that there are a number of posts in this forum under different headings that point to the same problems.

2. I decided to contact GoPro and chat "live with a technician who are available 24/7" according to the website....and lo' and behold....it was closed at the time of my attempt.  Figures.

...still hoping for some solution to appear from somewhere....

@Anonymous - If you go into the Settings in Quik, are the folders where files are imported to also listed as one of your folders in the Media Folder section? If the folder is there, does hitting "Scan" help get the files into your Quik dashboard?

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

@Anonymous - Sorry about that. Even if the files don't import, they should be still on the SD card unless they were deleted. Even then, there are recovery programs that might help recover any files from the SD card. They may also still be in your computer's trash can/recycle bin.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

Actually, I did try that in several different ways (files names, copying and pasting the path, etc) and then scanning and nothing is found.  And in fact, just now I tried to go to settings and add a folder, and that doesn't even work...the path area stays blank even though I select the folder and there are no scan options at this point.  I restarted the program and got the same result.

There are downloaded videos but again I use QuickTime to view them at the moment.  Quik has some videos listed but they are "greyed out" as unavailable....I can tell they are older videos that I've deleted so not sure why there are even images there.

Okay, when I went back to Quik the scan option was there.  Scanned and nothing happened.  No media appeared that was in the folders.

I am posting a screen shot of the folder locations which are all over the place because I've been trying unsuccesfully to figure this out.

Let me know if you see something that is wrong.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

Since my last pissed off post, I'm still pissed that GoPro maintains such terrible software, but I have atleast found a workable solution for me on my Macbook Pro laptop.

Now, when I plug my GoPro Hero 3+ into a USB port on my Macbook pro...I immediately hit the search magnifying glass in the top right and type "imagecapture". This will load an apple native program to see everything on your card.  For safety sake, just copy the full contents to a folder on your computer immediatly!

If any GoPro software tries to load... just close it, becuase it at best it sucks, and and at worst it will delete your videos before you get to watch or copy  them.

For time lapses:
copy all sequenced photos in a unique folder, then run ‘https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33252/time-lapse-assembler’ for mac

Avoid any GoPro software... Use anything Apple or Windows provides before trusting your footage to GoPro. If any single person at GoPro ever responded to my issues or complaints about their complete **bleep** software, I wouldn't be advising others this way. They once made nice cameras, but the software never kept up, and now apparently the camera's audio sucks on the 5... time to move on.

Good riddance after all the money I've spent on your gear. I hope anyone reading this will find another solution.

It's appalling that GoPro have no interest in fixing glaring errors in their software that are costing footage for their customers.

Unfortunately, this is something that can happen with companies that get so big; they can afford to get complacent.

It's clear that GoPro's Twitter feed is a bot; you never get any kind of proper response, just generic comments.

I've tweeter their head of software development - I'll let you know if he Tweets back.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

We've investigated many of the reports of files being deleted by Quik without being imported. In many of these cases, the number of files shown at the start of the import reflects files that Quik can not import. These include corrupted files and non-GoPro files already on the SD card. There is not a fix to be implemented in these situations as these files are not importable to Quik.

If you are seeing this issue, please document it for us with specifics. I've posted this earlier, but a good test to run is to do the following:

1. Format the SD card so that it has a clean slate to work from.

2. Take a series of photos and/or videos. Ideally, these would be something sequential or identifiable so that any gaps are spotted. For example, take photos/videos of your hands as you count up with your fingers.

3. Connect the SD card to your computer using an SD card adapter.

4. Copy the files onto your computer in a folder other than where you normally import your GoPro content to (do not delete any files from the SD card). This will be your "control group" that you will compare the imported content to.

5. Reinsert the SD card into your camera and import the content from your camera to your computer using Quik. This will be the "experimental group".

6. Compare the contents of the control group folder and the experimental group folder. If there are differences, please let us know.

At a minimum, if you suspect that there is an issue, please uncheck the selection you made earlier to auto-delete the SD card contents after importing. You will still be able to delete the contents of the SD card after you confirm that the import was done correctly.

Thanks,
Jeff

Wow Jeff, you are completly wrong, I have just imported 2 seperate memory cards, each had been formatted prior and both had 12 seperate files on them, and both imported one file, and deleted the rest... it is inexcusable that you are saying there is no issue here with so many people complaining, i will do a repeat test now, untick the box but also copy the files to my laptop first and see what comes back. is there any logs you can capture... have you guys actually tested this yourselves?

I completely agree. Accept that there is an issue and try working with customers experiencing the issue so that it can be properly diagnosed. Now has happened to me 4 times. No longer using Quik to avoid the issue. This kind of issue should be escalated as high up in the organization as necessary to get attention.

@grahamb17247 - With the camera plugged in and powered on, go to the camera's section of Quik for Desktop and click on the camera's settings button...

On the next window, deselect the second option box for "Automatically delete files from camera after importing" and then click Save.

You can do these steps with the SD card removed from your camera if you're concerned about the auto-delete happening while you are making these changes.

As said previously, when this happens, the first file is copied ok, the remaining files are deleted. I would suggest GOPRO go and do some testing, I would suggest an SD card with more than 10 files, shot from a continuous vide (I cannot seem to replicate on less than 10 files), tick the delete box as previously mentioned and then import the files directly from the SD card. I use a Macbook so this maybe related to the mac version, so that should also be part of the test.

My tests seem to be fine when the delete box is unticked... so that is a workaround, but not a fix

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

Thanks, @jefft. Before testing, I installed the latest update (5/31), and formatted my microSD on the camera. I also deleted all previous import folders on my computer and changed the destination import folder. I also removed the Quick auto-start feature, so that I could copy over the files manually to a backup folder, before opening Quik and doing the import that way. Upon opening Quik and doing the import, all files imported correctly, however, the summary screen indicated that only 6 of 7 files imported. This is the same error I received before, but this time all files were imported. So something is still off. Going to continue copying files manually to be safe. I will keep testing let you know if I have a better example. Thanks.

Re: QUIK Is Erasing My Footage

[ New ]

Jeff, I'm glad GoPro are finally engaging with this problem.

However, the problem is summarised quickly and easily, with this one screenshot (below).

Quik KNEW that only 33 of 62 videos had been imported, leaving 29 videos on the card; then ran the 'autodelete' feature anyway.

This is the EXACT reason so many of us have lost footage.

Simply fix it. Tell Quik NOT to autodelete a card unless it has imported ALL videos.
