How to I edit my videos with windows 8?

Hi,
First time using a GoPro and I'm wrapped with the footage. Any idea how I can edit the videos (and convert them to a viewable format) on a free editor?
Following on from an answer by the GoPro support team who responded to another question from somebody else (Noob question: Quik for Windows 8 desktop), I downloaded VSDC for Windows and spent a few hours editing the footage. I've now realised that the file format .vproj can only be converted to mp4, avi, etc if you purchase the Pro version. So basically the time I've spent on this is useless.
I've downloaded Quik but it doesn't support Windows 8 64 bit. Would anyone have any other ideas? I've just had a holiday in the Phillipines and am excited to play around with the footage.

For more advanced editing, you can try these (although your system might not be powerful enough for a good editing experience):
DaVinci Resolve https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve
HitFilmExpress https://hitfilm.com/express
ShotCut https://shotcut.org/download/
Lightworks http://www.lwks.com/
Avidemux http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
