i7-6800k
i7-7500u
MacBook pro with i7-4870HQ
They all sucked. Even the Kaby-Lake gen couldn't playback with the same symptoms as you. I'm sure an i5-6600K can play H265 in VLC or other software without any problem, even if the architecture doesn't optimize it.

All Nvidia 10-Series graphics cards, like 1070 and 1080, have hardware decoding support for HEVC 10-bit h.265, same with the new AMD GPUs. The new Ryzen processors have support for the codec built in too. Quik is just a sloppy program. The programers at GoPro are lazy. You have to use another editing program. You can verify the support yourself by loading up one of your videos in Windows Media Player Home Cinema. It kinda feels like Intel kicked GoPro some money to sell some processors, but they couldn't even get that right.

OK, So basically it comes down to this:
1. New computers can play the HEVC files in Windows 10 if they install the correct codec from the Microsoft Store. (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/play-hevc-coded-videos-on-windows-10)
2. The files cannot be edited by the GoPro Quik software, which means that you either have to use complicated open source or expensive third party software in order to work with the files.
OK, I can live with the above if I knew that GoPro was working on a fix in the near future, however - not monitoring the support and ignoring the communities and the dealers is telling me that they are probably not working on a fix. My solution so far is to shoot in 1080p and regretting the upgrade.
Sorry for not providing any new information - only posting this to let GoPro know that this is still a problem for everyone - and they have yet another unsatisfied customer.. :-( ..

Well, not adding anything useful to this thread, except trying to keep this alive. As I´m experiencing the same problem here, win10 and brand new coffee lake processor. Playback smooth everywhere else, but Quick doesn´t show the files at all.
Indeed, switched from Sony to Gopro finally and now I´m a bit confused why they are not actually making working software.

Hello @nicebeach11550,
HEVC files could still not be edited via Quik. There was a recent update on Quik for desktop but the feature is still not supported. We have passed this along to the team in charge. We will post updates once available.
Thanks,
Marius

Hello @zacharyj2427,
We still do not have an update. At this time, it remains that HEVC files could still not be edited via Quik. In the meantime, you might want to check what other community members have been using to edit their HEVC files. You can follow the thread here: https://community.gopro.com/t5/Cameras/Has-anyone-been-able-to-edit-HERO-6-BLACK-240FPS-1080p-GX0-fi... and here: https://community.gopro.com/t5/Cameras/Hero-6-HEVC-h-265-Editing-Workflow/td-p/64912
Thanks!
