there are a number of people around who still have the former studio program that worked with Windows 7

You don't want Studio. There are plenty of much better video editors available for free, DaVinci Resolve, VideoProc, VCSD ... And many more.

Just got a hero 8, and the videos from it will not import into the old studio software :/

oh that sucks, I feel for you.  Not sure why GoPro did that but it's not a surprise to me.

You would think they would upkeep gopro studio to support future hardware but they probably didn't have the resources to update and fix the bugs with GoPro studio.  I've been playing around with Sony Vegas 2016 and slowly moving away from my GoPro studio windows 7 support.

GoPro Quik is the only software that works with new cameras like the 8 now, and it only runs on Windows 10. Short of that you're stuck.
