GoPro Max has no editing software for Windows

[ New ]

I bought the GoPro Max, thinking wow what a wonderful idea it has just released got some spare cash. I buy the camera and then after 7 days of not arriving I send a message and get told my shipping address had an issue from day 1. I was never informed, already off to a horrible start GoPro. Then now I make a heap of footage I want to edit and oh wow, to my surpise you released the product without providing the software to run it on Windows. IT IS THE MOST USED OS BY THE WORLD WHY IS THERE NO SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS BUT THERE IS FOR MAC. GoPro, more like just Go because you definitaly aren't Pro...

Re: GoPro Max has no editing software for Windows

[ New ]

I agree this was a really bad move on GoPro's part. Most consumers will be suprised and shocked to find they cannot edit their videos on their PC using the free GoPro editing software. GoPro will claim that they can using their mobile device (if in fact their mobile device can handle the files) but still...

I think it would have been wise to release the MAX when their software was ready to go. So far no Windows version of Player and the exporter for windows do not include the HEVC or H.264 codecs only Cineform.

Basically if you do not have Adobe Premeir or After Effects you're SOL on the PC.

Just one other thing to keep in mind. The GoPro Player desktop for the mac OS is still limited. You can only export at a max resolution of 1080p. Why this is is unknown and baffles me. So even if they released a Windows compatible GoPro Player app you still would run into the issue of not being able to export to a higher resolution like 2.7k or 4k.

This means that when you upload to any social media platform your video is going to look very very pixelated.

Have you tried DaVinci Resolve (free) with the reframe360 plugin (free)?

@danielr15 Does this plug-in work for you? I installed it last week and it doesn't load the footage properly and crashes a lot. I tried restarting windows and uninstalling the plug-in and reinstalling. Still had no luck to edit the video with the Reframe plug-in.

I'm also using Davinci Resolve ver. 16

Yes, I haven't had any issues. It's not as good as the Premiere Pro plugins, but I use it frequently in Davinci Resolve 16

Shocking they still aren't properly supporting the max with a windows app. I love the camera, but thinking of chopping it in for the new insta one R. If they even told us when it'll arrive it'd help.

I have a Max and a Windows PC.

You can download the Insta360 Studio software for free. It will allow you to reframe your max footage.

Hi

Please explain how you do it. I tried it but Insta360 Studio 2019 doesn't support GOPRO 360 format. There is possible to convert movie to mp4 using GoPro Max Exporter but only to 4K resolution (not native GoPro MAX 5,6 K possible) and then reframe in Insta360. Did you mean this solution?

Thanks

You must first export to MP4 before using Insta360 studio. It will not process the GoPro 360 proprietary files.

Use GoPro max exporter to create the MP4s.

Re: GoPro Max has no editing software for Windows

[ New ]

Keep calm :) Like you, I am dissatisfied with this situation but it is not without a solution. There is a few options to work on Windows with GoPro Max 360 files:

1. Paid software from Adobe (Premiere Pro) with GoPro plugin (for me too expensive solution)

2. Free software DaVinci Resolve (for me too high hardware requirements - it is impossible to work on my computer)

3. Free software from Insta360. It works for me.

Look at my results here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqjNoVGZYK8zgbRhOysDFuA

But first you have to convert files from camera using GoPro Max Exporter (it works). In case of using Adobe or Resolve you can convert using max resolution 5,6K, but for Insta360 you have to convert using only 4K.

A bit complicated workflow is:

1. Converting files using MaxExporter to 360 flat movie 4K (mp4)

2. Reframing file by file using Insta360 software

3. Creating one movie from a few files from step 2 in LightWorks (in this step you can use any software for editing video you like)

4. Waiting for new software from GoPro - I still hope it will be released for Windows :)

Good luck!

As mentioned already by myself in other responses, you can also use the Magix video software.

You don't need to purchase the Pro version. And with this software I have been working for years now.

You can edit, create videos from regular 2D, photos, 360 video, reframing 360, and also create tiny planets.

Again for those who want to create great videos this is easy and not complicated and run's in Windows PC.

And the quality is quit okay since I don't publish in youtube, but create vacation movies etc and watch them on my 65inch TV.

The required plugin for resolve is no longer available.

Yes, adobe is expensive and more complicated.

The 360 software requires you to go to 4k so you LOSE resolution.

They lured us in with great demo footage but never put a "SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS" in the product description.

If you want your footage to look like what they lured you in with, YOU MUST HAVE MAC.

It's bait and switch.  Pay for 5.6k, can only use 4k.

This is outrageous. I'm feeling like an idiot trying to figure out how to view my videos on my PC and after a ton of searching around, I get to hear it's not PC compatible from your post? Shouldn't this be all over the place? I basically spent $500 on a camera I can't use! I might have just waited until they supported Windows because by the time they'll probably release it, there might be a Max II that has better specs! Sorry venting.

This is beyond insane.
I just got the camera two weeks ago and shot some great skydiving video with my friends and I can't see it, edit it or share it with anyone. So ridiculous for a billion-dollar company not to have software for Windows. Blows my mind. So regretting it.

Just bought a HERO 8 and a MAX with a bunch of mounts and what not. This is my first entry into the adventures of action cams. Thinking that if I go with GoPro, I'm pretty safe. I WAS SO WRONG! No support on the Windows 10 platform. You gotta be kidding me?

DaVinci Resolve for the HERO8 and MAX. Edit/Reframe your 360 MAX videos on a mobile device. The quality will be the same (if not better) as reframing on a computer.  You can also use other free and paid desktop software.  Some other free options are:

VSDC on Windows- http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor/download.
DaVinci Resolve https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

VideoProc https://www.videoproc.com/
HitFilmExpress https://hitfilm.com/express
ShotCut https://shotcut.org/download/
Lightworks http://www.lwks.com/
Avidemux http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
Blender https://www.blender.org/download/
EZvid http://www.ezvid.com/download
VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/
Fusion https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion/motiongraphics
Lives http://lives-video.com/index.php?do=home

As far as reframing on the desktop, you can use Adobe Premiere Pro or even the software from Insta360 (And just FYI, Insta360 recommends using the GoPro FX plugins for their 360 cameras). Render in GoPro Max Exporter as 4K if you are going to use the Insta360 software. Most major camera companies (Sony, Canon, Fuji, Panasonic) don't offer free editing software for their cameras.  GoPro is working on GoPro Player for Windows and Beta testing has already started. Hopefully it will be deliverable soon.  Until then, there are many free and paid options available.  For MAX, the best option is to use a mobile device and the GoPro app.

Davinci Resolve has a Free plugin (for which development has stopped and will not as of this moment be updated).
The plugin allows you to reframe 360 footage. But it only works well for static camera positions, as you need to define a seperate camera for each reframing. This is not a real option for eg. MTB, MX, RR and any other moving cameras. If GoPro where to make a plugin for Davinci Resolve, then I might see it as an option. It seems though, that GoPro are in bed with Apple and Adobe. The mobile version you speak of, is also way better on IOS devices, of which I own some, but use non.

You don't need to define a separate camera angle for each reframing.  That's just an option that simplifies and speeds up reframing.  The plugin has the standard keyframe reframing, so it works fine for action sports.  I use it for surfing all the time.

I´m in the same boat as you. Stuck with the MAX 360 camera and no editing possibilities because im a windows 10 user. I´m waiting for the GoPro Player for windows release like everybody else. And I have only been waiting for 3 weeks.

I would try and sell my GoPro MAX, but my conscience tell me not to. I would feel like a scammer if I sold it.

GoPro doesnt care about customers. I know that now.

Good on you. I also didn't want to scam so tired to find a solution. My new and good quality Android phone wouldn't do it. My normally adequate iPad wouldn't. I ended up buying a£500 iPad, essentially just to process videos. The alternatives go pro suggest are clumsy and give poor quality results. I wish I'd waited a few weeks and bought the new insta.

Hopefully other potential GoPro MAX buyers are going to check this forum before buying a GoPro MAX.
Thats one thing I learned from this. In love with a product? Check the supportforum for the product before buying...

Re: GoPro Max has no editing software for Windows

This is my solution, even though it involves a pretty steep learning curve, considering what is offered for Apple/GoPro customers (Gopple?).

I went to udemy.com and enrolled in a Davinci Resolve course – which I will not regret, regardless of which camera I end up using.

I found the free plugin for Davinci Resolve, which is no longer kept up to date. While you have some easy control, I don’t like the idea of getting too hung up on a piece of software, that may or may not “stay alive”.

Therefor I went and bought a licensed version of Davinci Resolve ($299), which gives access to Fusion. Then I followed this guide to get me going:

https://www.bilsub.com/english-russian/Reframing-GoPro-Max-360-Video-Davinci-Resolve-16-2019-vd-2121...

The guide is really good, although you have to stop and rewind every now and then, to figure out where the mouse pointer is at, and where the clicks are going.

I still find it very disappointing that GoPro went this way with their product support.

There are various good and alternative / available ways to perform the reframing in Windows.

I have tried Davinci Resolve (free version with plug in), the Insta360 studio (which is also free to use) and I personally love to use Magix Video.

With Magix I can create great videos from the GoPro Max and can perform reframe, tiny planets etc. Next i can combine the end result by also adding photos, transitions, color corrections, effects etc.

As I am rendering towards 1080P and watch the end result on my 65inch TV, I am very pleased and happy with my GoPro Max.

Re: GoPro Max has no editing software for Windows

Hey guys,

I have a solution for Windows users. Sure you cannot use any gopro software for their own camera but I found a solution.

Download the Gopro Max exporter to turn the 360 files into MP4 files, then download the Insta360 studio reframing software.

From there you can do all your reframing, much like you can with the gopro software for Mac. After you reframe your footage you can export it into an MP4 again and throw it into Devinci resolve or any software and do colour correction and timeline edits.

hope this helps guys. I will add a video link below to what I am talking about and how to use the software.

Sorry, oliverp42466, but you brought nothing new to the discussion. I wrote about this solution before. The problem is that you lose quality to 4K and don't use 5.6K. In addition, in this case, you convert the movie three times - first by doing export in GoPro Windows Exporter, then by doing reframe in Insta360 and export, and then, e.g. in DaVinci, again making one movie from several clips. A dedicated program should give you the ability to create a movie instantly from multiple 360 and non-360 clips.

If you registered as a beta tester, Beta 2 - the exporter version - has been released....export to equirectangular at 5.6k, 4k, etc. and choose codecs like HEVC, Cineform, and H.264

Attention, don't buy gopro max because you don't have software to edit on windows. Gopro only wants to sell, it doesn't care about its users. It's been 8 months since its launch and they don't want to know. you buy gopro max and can only edit on Mac or Smartphone. VERY BAD

Re: GoPro Max has no editing software for Windows

Actually, the Windows software is in Beta and plenty of people who follow GoPro are testing and using the software. Additionally, there are several options currently that allow for reframing and editing Max footage on a Windows device. However, that being said, the GoPro mobile app is very good, gives great results, and is getting updated almost bi-weekly.

YOU might not be happy with the current options, and YOU might not want to wait, but having tried several of the newer 360 camera alternatives, I for one am very happy with MAX and feel it's the best option.

However, I'm not going to tell YOU what to do, just as YOU don't need to be trying to tell others what to do.

If you want to try alternatives, by all means, do so. Try the Insta360 with the floating red orb showing up in all your shots and the inferior audio and picture quality. Maybe it will make you happy. They even have a clunky version where you have to carry around extra lens to get scratched and lost.

I started to use the Android app and it's ok. Took me a bit to understand but once I got it, it allowed me to do very basic things which is enough for what I need to do.
For a multi-billion-dollar company, you would think that within a few weeks they would have something for Windows. So rediculous.

Ok, so once again a little clarity is needed. GoPro is a worldwide brand and is the leader in both quality and sales in the action camera market; however, they have less than one thousand employees and have only recently showed a profit in a few business quarters. The founder and CEO of GoPro receives $1.00 annually as his paycheck. The engineers that work on GoPro software are a small group of highly skilled and dedicated people. You can complain all you want, fine, but leave out the hyperbole exaggerations of them being some multi-billion-dollar company. It's not even close to being there truth.

Should I cry that GoPro has a loss? Maybe I should pay extra 1k euro to the price of the camera to improve their material situation?

I don't need to drill in the financial report. I see billions of income and see them growing. I can't believe that such a company has no money for a team of programmers who are unable to release software for the most popular operating system in the world - Windows.

And by the way - if there is no software then it should be clearly communicated during the sale: "you can buy our camera, but we do not give you a tool for editing video on Windows." It's a simple. For me EOT.

It takes very little time to go through the GoPro.com website to find out the capabilities, features, and software available for Max. The mobile app is very good and produces virtually the same, if not better, results as reframing 5.6k videos on a desktop computer.

Drill into financials? It's literally the first category. I expect no emotional response, but if you're going to post information you know nothing about and have done zero critical thinking over, then you cry about your foolishness I guess, but probably best just to keep it to yourself.

As others have offered, there are many ways to edit and get great results with 360 videos from Max. Additionally, GoPro is working on the new Windows software that is currently in phase 2 of 3.

I don't particularly care if you love, like, or hate Max. I do want people to enjoy their camera as much as I have been able to, so I guess there is some apathy, but not enough to continue arguing about it.

Bottom line. GoPro offers 30-day money back. If you purchased from someone else that didn't offer the same or better, then I hope you will eventually learn the lesson that you should do some research before making your purchases. If you did, and you decided to keep the camera, after having every opportunity to find out the software limitations, then it's on you. Max is a superior 360 camera, so I get holding on to it, but the amount of negativity is ridiculous.

"It takes very little time to go through the GoPro.com website to find out the capabilities, features, and software available for Max."

Yes - one of this is my post in this topic written about one month ago but probably you didn't read it.

"The mobile app is very good and produces virtually the same, if not better, results as reframing 5.6k videos on a desktop computer."

Yes, but need strong mobile phone with Android or iOS - not for all people

"Drill into financials? It's literally the first category. I expect no emotional response, but if you're going to post information you know nothing about and have done zero critical thinking over, then you cry about your foolishness I guess, but probably best just to keep it to yourself."

Foolishness is to justify a corporation that it is "poor" and therefore has not released video processing software for Windows.

"As others have offered, there are many ways to edit and get great results with 360 videos from Max."

The product (camera) without the dedicated editing firmware is not complete. It is stupid not to understand it.

"Additionally, GoPro is working on the new Windows software that is currently in phase 2 of 3."

I'm really impressed! It's better than nothing. It's high time. The software should be ready from the first day of product sale.

"I don't particularly care if you love, like, or hate Max. I do want people to enjoy their camera as much as I have been able to, so I guess there is some apathy, but not enough to continue arguing about it."

Reading what you write, I am sure that you have not read my previous posts. I like GoPro Max and I tell others how to enjoy what GoPro Max can do, but at the same time I do not accept the lack of software.

"This is a member to member support community. The purpose is for members to be able to share tips and tricks for getting the best results possible from their cameras. If you want to bitch to GoPro, fine, but this isn't the place for it. To leave feedback, you can do so here..."

As above.

And more:

"The founder and CEO of GoPro receives $1.00 annually as his paycheck."

Yes, this is indeed the best tips and tricks in this topic.
