Does the GoPro App for Desktop require a login to work

Have the app on my MacBook. Will not seem to work unless I am logged in. Is this normal?  If so how do you use the app when not near an Internet connection?  Also the app doesn't automatically launch when I connect my Hero 4 Silver even though I checked the box. Trying to decide whether to use the GoPro app or apple's Movie and so far the Go Pro app is frustrating. All help appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous, you should still be able to use GoPro App for Desktop whether you are connected to the internet or not. This problem could be stemming from your camera not being recognized when it is connected to your computer. I suggest manually updating your HERO4 Silver to see if this helps your camera be recongnized by your computer when it is connected to it. 

 

If you are unsure how to manually update your HERO4 Silver, click on the link and follow the directions for "Manual Update."

 

HERO4 Silver Update

 

Once updated, close any GoPro application on your computer (restarting your computer entirely would be great as well). Connect your HERO4 Silver to your cmputer with the power off. Once connected securely and the front red LED light is solid, power on the camera and make sure you see the USB symbol on the front LCD screen. Does GoPro App for Desktop start automatically? 

 

Come back and let us know your progress.

In addition to @bhero comments, GoPro App for Desktop ONLY requires to sign in with a internet connection only during the first time launching GoPro App for Desktop. Once signed on, it will recognize the account and no longer to require to sign in every time you operate or launch GoPro App for Desktop.

OK! Here is my report.  I did not update the firmware but did restart the MacBook and, when connecting the GoPro to the MacBook, I first let the red light go completely on and then turned on the camera. 

 

The good news - the desktop app no longer requires me to logon. That is very good. The app also recognizes the GoPro and asks to download files. That is also very good.  Great progress!

 

The not so good - connecting the camera still does not launch the app but that is no big deal. The camera seems to get stuck in the "off" condition when it has been tethered to the MacBook. 

 

Did in some more experimenting.  I turned off the "Quick Capture" mode on the GoPro. Now it's behavior when tethered is much better and does not get stuck in the "off" condition.  Also very predictable and stable operations when tethered.

 

Summary - the GoPro and app are working as I would hope. Very good. I believe there is something about the "Quick Capture" mode that confuses the camera/app when tethered. Furthermore, I don't think that "Quick Capture" is really any faster than pushing the on/off/mode button and then tapping the record button.  I understand that it may conserve battery power but battery power has not been an issue for me.  Should I choose to use the "Quick Capture" in the future I will turn the feature off before tethering.

I have a Hero4 Session and am working, trying to get the app to work, on my laptop PC, Lenovo P50 running Windows 7 and IE 11.

 

When I launch the app. it prompts me to log in with my email and password. The app tells me that there is no Internet connection yet I know there is one.

 

We tried the app also on my laptop PC, Lenovo L540, and had the same results.

 

PLEASE HELP and tell me what I need to do to sign in. This should be so easy and yet it is not!!!

For me every 2 weeks asks to log in. As a suprise since last week i cannot log in from desktop app! it keeps saying: an INTERNET connection is needed to login, despite that everything is working fine(browsers etc.)
