Can't encode HEVC/4K

I can import and play 4k@60fps HEVC videos from my hero 7 black just fine in Quik.

The issue is that I am unable to encode the videos.

When I try to save a video as 4K@60fps, I get the message that my operating system is not supporting that bitrate and/or framerate.

I can export a video to 1080p@60fps, but that gets encoded in H.264, so I figured it's a H.265 issue.

Yes, I have the HEVC extensions installed. Yes, I own feasible hardware:

i7 7700k

Win 10 1906

GTX1070

32GB RAM

Re: Betreff: Can't encode HEVC/4K

Hello @kamairo How are you editing and saving the video? Is it through the Quik for Desktop application? HEVC is not fully compatible with Quik for Desktop just yet. See HEVC Explained for reference.

Alternatively, you can check this list of editing applications that work well with GoPro files as shared by a Hub member.

If you would like product or tutorial videos to better understand these other applications, I recommend searching online video hosting websites (such as Youtube, Vimeo, etc) for published videos or other 3rd party generated content.

Hi @aenriquez ,

nowhere in that article does it state that video encoding with H.265 is not supported by the Quick app for desktop. Besides, why do I get the option to save the video in 4K@60fps when the software can't export with these settings?

I do use other applications for video editing, but I want/need to use Quik for Desktop to make use of the GPS/accelerometer/etc. metadata. Now I have my 4k@60fps footage including metadata and I just want to save this with the metadata overlays in the same quality.

Re: Betreff: Can't encode HEVC/4K

@kamairo, it is stated under "limitations with HEVC" section in the article. It even states that Quik fro Desktop will still copy HEVC files to your computer, but they won’t appear in the Quik for desktop Media gallery and may struggle to play back.

Anyhow, we've also found some instances where the app will eventually allow these files to be imported. However, that doesn't guarantee that the said video file format will be fully compatible with the app.

This information is something that has already been shared to the team in charge.

As for the GPS overlay, alternatively, you may use Quik for Mobile or should you need to use a desktop app, many users suggest Racerender or Dashware.
