Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

From PC World:

"Yet another program is joining Java 6 and Windows XP as big-name software you do not want running on your PC. Security firm Trend Micro and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are advising all Windows users to uninstall Apple’s QuickTime as soon as possible. (The advisory does not affect Mac users.)

The reason for getting rid of QuickTime for Windows is twofold. First, Apple told Trend Micro it is deprecating the software and will no longer deliver security updates for it. Second, there are two known critical vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to take control of a system running QuickTime."

During the installation of the GoPro desktop app (which includes GoPro Studio), there is a recommendation to install QuickTime. I did not install QuickTime and have not had any trouble.

I hope that the GoPro developers are working on a way to replace the QuickTime functions in the Windows version of the app!

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

This is good news.  I just got done e-mailing GoPro support asking if there was a workaround to having to install Quicktime for GoPro Studio to work.  I'm glad to hear that it isn't required.

I wish I would have come here first, but even though I've been a GoPro user since GoPro Hero (original), I didn't know this forum exist.

I'm glad GoPro offers a "Suggestions" option in the drop down under Contact us.  I think I have a good suggestiong, make this forum more visable :)

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

This is not something that we should hope on, its something that we shall expect from GoPro. From technical point of view this was already a very bad decision to develop something depending on such a bad maintained product like Quicktime which comes with a bunch of bad bloatware from Apple. This problem have to be fixed within the next weeks. Because currently there is a huge security issue with Quicktime and this won't be fixed anymore because the software is depricated.

Actually, I expect great things in the way off editing software from GoPro. If you do a quick Google search for, "GoPro acquires" you will see that they have been buying editing software companies.

Personally, I think the future of GoPro is in the hands of the software development team.

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

This is what I fear of... So far gopro software is the worst software I ever touched. And the problem with Apple quick time is really big, because without it you don't have audio in the gopro studio. which renders it useless!and to install that stupid useless apple software, which you won't use, just to be able to use the gopro studio is kind of really bad development decision. And now with the security risk even worse, and i doubt they'll fix it soon...

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

I might be overly optimistic but I'd be willing to bet that you are wrong on this. I guess it really comes down to time frame. With the upcoming release of the Karma and new Hero, I fully expect that we will be seeing the release of new editing software. Rumors are that this will happen in October. Question is, do you feel that is too far out?

With the recent acquisitions by GoPro, they obviously are willing to invest in providing a good solution to Gopro users.

Re: Apple abandons QuickTime for Windows

So does anyone have any suggestions for video editing other than the GoPro software?  Premier?  Curious if there are any issues getting the vids off the camera without the GoPro Studio (haven't tried yet).  Just installed Quicktime, not going back.  Would be a shame if I couldn't use my Hero4 just because of GoPro's reliance on *very* old software (and I don't mean updates).
