One produces a video clip.
The other produces photo's.
Those are two very different things.
You would record timelapse as a video clip if you wanted to show people a video clip.
You would record timelapse as photo's if you wanted to create a video clip in a video editor at a later stage or if you wanted to pull individual photo's to share from a timelapse sequence.
You can also capture your photo's as raw photo's and this is going to give you a lot more options post processing the images individually if you so wished.
