superview & stabilzation on Hero 8 black

[ New ]

Is there any 4:3 or superview mode in any framerate/resolution combination that supports Hypersmooth high or hypersmooth high and boost on the Hero 8 black?

Thank you for the feedback, everyone. Apologies for the confusion on the previously-linked article on HERO8 Black - Video Settings and Resolutions . It has been updated and now reflects the correct information.

This article: HERO8 Black - HyperSmooth 2.0 presents all the resolution and settings where HyperSmooth is available. Currently, High and Boost are not available when the camera is in SuperView FOV.

Also to add to the question, if not, will hypersmooth high or hypersmooth high and boost be added in a future firmware update?

@low5er, Superview digital lens option isn't available on 4:3 aspect ratio. You may refer to this article for the list of available video settings and resolutions for HERO8 Black.

We do not have any information about future firmware updates at this time. You can continue checking our website https://gopro.com/ for further updates.

my understanding is that Superview IS 4:3 (meaning the whole height of the sensor) dynamically stretched out to 16:9. I would therefore assume that anything hypersmooth high or boost that is available in any 4:3 mode would also be available in those modes in 16:9. Is there any superview available with hypersmooth high or boost?

Again, I reiterate my question. Is there any 4:3 or superview combination of framrates and resolutions that support Hypersmooth high or Hypersmooth high and boost?

@low5er, 16:9 or 4:3 is the aspect ratio. This is the ratio of the width to the height of an image.

Superview is one of the available digital lenses (formerly referred to as FOV) in the GoPro camera. This option lets you choose how much of the scene is captured by your camera. It also affects the zoom level and fisheye effect in your shot. For Video mode, Superview captures the largest field of view while Narrow captures the smallest.

Have you checked the article HERO8 Black - Video Settings and Resolutions attached on my previous post? It lists down all the available resolutions, framerate, digital lens option (FOV), Hypersmooth availability, etc. for each aspect ratio.

so according to that chart, it appears that hypersmooth on, high and boost with superview is listed in a few 2.7K modes in 16.9 as well as 4:3 wide with on and boost.

the reason I am asking is that Abe Kislevitz was saying in one of his articles (unless I misunderstand) that high or boost was not available in 4:3 or superview 16:9, and that's a bit of a dealbreaker for me.

Yes, Abe Kislevitz mentioned in his blog post about the Hero 8 that HyperSmooth on High or Boost will not be available if you select SuperView. Which is in direct contradiction of what GoPro itself is saying on their resolution and modes overview linked above. And considering that he is an actual GoPro employee, this is really frustrating. Not having HyperSmooth High on any of the 2.7k or 4k SuperView modes would be a total letdown. https://abekislevitz.com/gopro-hero8-black/

Yes I to am hoping we will have a firmware update to address this as superview is really the "action fov".

Well, for what it's worth, YouTuber DCRainmaker seems to think that it has Superview in Boost modes according to his review.

Quote

"HyperSmooth Boost is supported in the following modes:

4K: 30/25/24
2.7K (16:9 & 4:3): 60/50/30/25/24
1440p: 60/50/30/25/24
1080p: 120/100/60/50/30/25/24"

yep, hopefully they can add it in a firmware update.

4k 60fps superview with hypersmooth is my pipe-dream...

Soo, did the "team in charge" say anything about the possible resolution & HyperSmooth combinations yet?

So being that high and boost are available in 4:3 in some resolutions, are there plans to add it to superview being that superview IS 4:3 stretched out dynamically to 16:9? Would think that wouldn't be too big of a deal...

Actually I don't see any 4:3 resolution that supports HyperSmooth High in the updated chart linked above. Yeah Boost there is, but Boost also cuts away more from the image to achieve that level of stabilization, so that's not totally unexpected. Although really SuperView should then work with Boost just as well.

However, no High setting with SuperView means there's no reason for me to buy the Hero 8 over my 7 at all. Pretty big letdown, that original resolution overview seemed so promising.

Maybe firmware updates will add this functionality later on, but I don't have high hopes for it. There's probably not enough spare screen "real estate" for the "High" stabilization to work with the same amount of cropping as "On" when 4:3 / SuperView is selected.

Re: superview & stabilzation on Hero 8 black

Hypersmooth high is not available for 4:3 aspect ratio and it is very unlikely to be introduced with a firmware update.

Hypersmooth high is not available for superview in any 19:9 aspect raiot resolution.

These key performance features are reserved for the next gopro model plus the gopro max is intended to push customers looking for these specific settings as it offers max superview with max hypersmooth but only at 1440 60fps max or 1080 60.

I got my 8 recently and i wish 4:3 had hypersmooth high or atleast superview with high in 2.7k 60 16:9 but instead i have decided to use the boost 4:3 2.7k 60fps (or 2.7k 60fps 16:9 hypersmooth high) as my only settings for the hero 8 for which i even had to change my old adhesive mount postitions and move them back to compensate for the tight crop.

PS - Hypersmooth Boost definitely delivers gimbal like stabilisation than any other hypersmooth modes availabe for the 8.
