Yes.

 

Rinse in fresh water afterwards to avoid corrosion / salt crystals build up.

Yes you can, however please note that a water proof case costs $50 (or cheaper if you have a GoPro Plus account).  Your GoPro probably cost you around $350.  The GoPro Warranty does not cover water damage........

 

Ergo, if something goes wrong it's going to cost you a pretty penny.  If you have GoPro plus you can always replace the camera for a small replacement fee (about 1/3 the price of the camera usually, but then you're waiting for you camera to be shipped to GoPro and you may be waiting longer for a replacement if they don't have any stock).

 

So in all fairness, I would never use my camera in the water without first putting it in a waterproof case.
