need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]

How can I get VAT invoices for orders MP-04338754, MP-04350262 and MP-04354169?

I have tried to contact gopro for days now. if I use the same login details that I'm registered with, the chat always says "we are busy helping other users, try again later", if I use an alternative email and phone number then a chat window pops up that says "hang on while we connect you to an agent". I have messaged GoPro on facebook and not received a reply. I have requested call-backs  - one happened, at silly-o-clock in the morning so I missed it while scrabbling to get to the phone.

So PLEASE don't give me a link to your "contact us" page, because it is useless!

I need to have tax-compliant invoices for B2B purchases. I am registered in the UK, and just need an official invoice, because your order confirmations and shipping notifications are not enough for accounting purposes.

I did manage to talk to them on the phone regarding this same issue. They refused to create an EU VAT invoice, stating that the receipt I received on my email when I ordered is the only invoice they will send me.

Just commenting here so I get a notification if you report back on your experience. Good luck

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

@saddlerkate, tax exempt orders cannot be processed via a gopro.com online purchase since sales tax is automatically included with the price. Due to recent system and process limitations, GoPro’s policy does not allow issuing a refund when requested after the sale. It is suggested that you contact your State Department of Revenue to determine the process or eligibility for a refund directly from the state.

Should you have further questions, please reach out to our Support Team.

If having trouble connecting, if you haven't yet, try again after clearing cache and cookies or using a different browser. You may also explore using an incognito browser to see if it makes a difference. Also, please manually enter the details on the form; do not copy-paste the info.

Once on the page, fill out the form and you will be given an option to initiate a chat conversation or to request a callback. Be sure to put in your best contact number on the form.

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

@aenriquezthank you for your reply.

1. I made the purchase on www.gopro.com/uk, which suggested that I was purchasing from a British legal entity; as it turns out, it's Dutch: GoPro Cooperatief UA; that's not a problem at all; they should issue an invoice under EU laws, which can either show their own local VAT, or else be a VAT-free inner-European invoice using European VAT ID numbers

2. my main problem is this, and please ONLY reply to this point, and not to the point of "your State Department of Revenue" which is clearly aimed at US users:

I don't have ANY official invoice. I received an order confirmation. I received a shipping notification. I have no formal sales invoice, which under ANY country's rules must include the vendor's complete details (registered address), the buyer's complete details (which I provided), and all the purchased goods with their quantities, price per unit of sale, and any taxes levied on the sale (even if the invoice should be issued by GoPro US, I will figure out how to claim back any taxes...).

But I need an invoice in the first place, so that I can give it to my accountant. Otherwise I cannot claim this expense of buying the camera for the business (a Limited company in the UK).
So how do I get one?

Thanks

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]

Hi @kajuna

yes, that's what I am worried about. But that is actually illegal. In every country, a vendor has to provide an invoice that complies with commercial regulations. And these always require the full details of the vendor (registered address, registration number etc), and the buyer's full details, as well as the purchased goods with quantities, prices and any sales taxed levied.

If my order was fulfilled by GoPro Cooperatief UA in the Netherlands, they can either issue a VAT-free inner-European invoice that shows all our VAT ID numbers, or they can issue one that includes Dutch VAT - I can claim that back. If it's GoPro in the US that fulfilled the order, then they still have to issue a formal sales invoice, and I don't care whether there's any "sales tax" on it.

I need ANY formal invoice in the first place, otherwise HMRC won't allow me to claim the purchase of the GoPro as a business expense, and I will be SOOOOOO annoyed if they refuse to do so. I will program a bot to log a request for one on this forum EVERY DAY if they don't, until they get tired of it and send me one   ;-)

drastic. but understandable. I can see many professionals going down that route. as a business owner, even if you really need a camera, you simply cannot afford to pay it out of your own pocket. which is the effect of gopro not providing the legally required documentation

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]
Today I talked with GoPro phone support again. My intention was to purchase the camera through them, so they would not have the excuse that they do not create invoices for online orders. They replied with the same copypasted answer "Tax exempt orders cannot be processed via a gopro.com..." etc, "talk to your state department..." etc. And provided no alternative channel to purchase the camera, other than gopro.com. So GoPro is effectively refusing to provide VAT invoices for their sales, which is in breach of the law. I will find my way around this and stop wasting time, but it seems very obvious that GoPro will face legal problems (at least in Europe) if they don't address this.

It really annoys me that their website seems to be run by and aimed at US customers anyway.

But even in the US there is the legal obligation to provide invoices. Forget the VAT aspect, I can work around that or suck it up. But for goodness sake, just GIVE ME AN INVOICE.

All I get out of this "community support" is 'use the contact page and arrange a call-back' - woweee - that's useless as wheels on a surfboard... Because I can never get through either on chat or with call-back. Oh, maybe that's because they call-back at 6am UK time, when I am still asleep.

GoPro - Allegation of e-commerce and online Tax Fraud and Tax Evasion - Please Report this.

After dozens of attempts I managed to speak with GoPro customer service. They refused to send me a VAT invoice. GoPro is refusing to issue official EU VAT invoices. That is completely illegal.

Gopro are charging VAT and selling from the Netherlands, they are required to provide a valid VAT invoice when requested and issue tax-compliant invoices.

I encourage you to Report this situation of GoPro Tax Fraud and Tax Evasion. Please google how you can report tax fraud to your Country Tax Agency and make a complaint to European Comission.

Please Note
If your order is broken up into multiple shipments, shipping and tax will be reflected on each order, but will only be charged once".

These two are the only emails I received. Nothing else in spam.

By your own definition in the subject line, this is a a shipping notification. It lacks vital parts in order to be acceptable as a tax invoice for business purposes, most notably an invoice number and complete vendor details. Who issued the invoice, where was the invoice issued, and what taxes if any were levied. There are laws governing commercial invoices, whether they are issued to consumers or to businesses. In the UK, they can be found here:
https://www.gov.uk/invoicing-and-taking-payment-from-customers/invoices-what-they-must-include

and it is an absolute certainty that other countries have similar requirements - which this shipping notification does not fulfil.

So regardless of where this shipment was invoiced, the buyer should receive a document that is actually called "invoice", and that should comply with the legal requirements for such an "invoice" in the country that it was issued in.

Otherwise, GoPro is not complying with commercial laws and will sooner or later fall foul of them.

I am looking forward to your reply, ideally by email with a legally compliant commercial invoice attached to it.

Thank you for the detailed reply, @saddlerkate. We have shared your feedback with the Tax team. We will post back once we hear back from them. Thanks!

Why is it a different order number to the one in the OA? - It's due to the different systems accepting the order and processing the order. Both numbers refer to the same order though.

They were making VAT invoices and tax refunds until recently. I had mine for the Hero 8. They have intentionally stopped doing that. Their legal team must think they can get away with this (at least in Europe) because GoPro is not selling the cameras directly, GoPro Cooperatief UA is, so it's them who are required to provide valid documents when requested.

The "we do not know what an invoice is" responses, I cannot explain.

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]

well, GoPro Cooperatief UA is in the Netherlands, which is an EU member state, so they are legally obliged to issue formal tax-invoices that show their vendor details including their VAT ID number.

every country has got laws that state that if you sell a product, you also have to provide a legally acceptable invoice.

every country has got laws that tell vendors exactly what has to be present on such an invoice in order to meet the rules, and they are all very similar to these ones here:

https://www.gov.uk/invoicing-and-taking-payment-from-customers/invoices-what-they-must-include

So if GoPro think they can get away with it, or that they have covered their backsides, they can think again.

I cannot imagine that these "shipping notifications", that don't state who sold the product, would be acceptable as invoices in any country in the world, not even the USA...

There is always a difference between where goods are shipped from and where they are invoiced from. I don't care where they are invoiced, either, I just need a FORMAL INVOICE that meets the generally accepted criteria for such a document - and such criteria always and anywhere first and foremost include: VENDOR DETAILS. That can't be that difficult, surely???

Forget VAT, taxes, re-claiming or anything like that. Just a simple invoice. That's all.

I still cannote believe that such a globally active company cannot comply with the most basic legal requirements...

@saddlerkate You are absolutely right. What I meant is that GoPro support members are refusing to provide invoices because they work for GoPro inc., not GoPro Cooperatief UA.

I think I'll contact GoPro Cooperatief UA directly when I repurchase the camera, either by phone or certified letter. I've got their contact details because —ironically enough, they provided me with a valid commercial invoice when I returned my camera.

I am not talking about my subscription, either, but about the purchase of goods.

As for "discuss it via mail" - yeah, right - I am not going to send them POST from the UK to the USA. Much easier to start a name-and-shame campaign on Facebook that will surely gain a lot of momentum.

But I will wait to see what they come back with - their admin told me that they have taken it upstairs, so I'll wait and see.

@fishycomics

Thanks.

I have been trying to sort this out with GoPro's support for days and days now. Requesting call-backs that never happen, trying to get onto their live chat that doesn't seem to work (various browsers, all security turned right down, still nothing).

I have no idea who or what the CSA is, but am guessing it's something that has no bearing at all on UK customers...?
I do feel that this belongs in this forum because it is a fundamental issue, something that GoPro is doing wrong and most probably illegally. They must give each customer an invoice. End of. Why don't they do it?

As I have said a hundred times: I don't care about taxes or reclaiming anything. I just need a commercial invoice that is acceptable to our tax authorities so that I can claim the purchase of my camera as a business expense. It's something so simple that no business can exist without it.
And for now, I am waiting for that admin to get back to me, as they promised in a post earlier today.

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]

Hey All,

Having also previously posted my annoyance at not being given an invoice - I would make this point - this is not really a discssion on whether we should be sent invoices or not.  We as customers have paid for items from one EU country to another, and have requested invocies for said purchase.  saddlerkate has made this point, and I have reitereated it - we need invoices, as anyone else does, to make our purchses fit within our business scenarios.  Am assuming in posting the issue here, saddlerkate is trying to make GoPro aware of this oversight, mainly so they....issue an invoice!!  That's all.  It's not really a discussion - it's a problem with GoPro - who currently seem to have shut up any previous level of customer service to a bare minimum.

Moving forward my advice within the UK is - buy any future GoPros form somewhere like PCWorld.  A - They issue an invoice.  And B - as recently with me, they FULLY refunded a faulty Fusion MONTHS after I'd brought it - beacause they are a UK company based in the UK and HAVE to operate in a way that isn't contrary to any trading standards or financially sound operational procedures.  And - it's possible to march in there with the faulty product and tell them that!

I doubt this will get anywhere with GoPro - which is a shame - as I say, they seem to have turned their backs on their customers' concerns, but as I say, as a point of discussion, issuing an invocie or not ISN"T a discssion, and isn't why these issues were posted - they were posted as a means to try and actually raise the issue, in the hope of actually GETTING an invoice.

I hope that clarifies my post at least.   saddlerkate, I hope I have also interpretted your reasoning correctly,

With thanks

HIGH FIVE

Nothing to add, really!
I have come to the same conclusion that future purchases will have to be made through retailers within the UK.
But that doesn't help me with the main expenditure that I have already incurred... I don't know whether I can return the item after using it already, so getting an invoice would be the quickest and easiest solution to my problem.

Thank you for your highly erudite and concise contribution!

Never mind VAT or any other Tax.

JUST AN INVOICE.

ALL I WANT IS A BLESSED INVOICE!!!
AN INVOICE IS A DOCUMENT THAT CONFIRMS THE PURCHASE OF GOODS OR SERVICES, LISTING THE BUYER AND THEIR DETAILS, THE VENDOR AND THEIR DETAILS, AND THE GOODS/SERVICES AND THEIR VALUE.

It's as basic as anything.

Why can GoPro not do it???

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

From my understanding, a self-billing invoice (DIY invoice) is more than enough to meet the requirements of your country's tax authority. (it is an document/invoice which show all the information required by law)

In fact, you don't even need to make a DIY invoice to prove that the purchase was actually made.

There might be a reason that you can’t obtain one from the supplier (in this case the shady practices of this Company).

In this situation your country's tax authority will accept a claim for VAT where you can show to its satisfaction that:

- the purchase actually took place, this might include alternative documentary evidence (purchase order, emails, records of payment, supplier’s VAT number or or anything that can support the claim)
-it was a purchase for your business

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]

@mrw5822thank you. I will read those websites tonight!

My understanding of "self-billing" is that the buyer issues a credit note to the vendor for goods received, subsequently issuing a cash refund on that credit note. I used to work for a global chemical company and had the project of setting up self-billing for an automotive OEM. The OEM would weigh incoming tankers before and after unloading, then issue us a credit note for the offloaded quantity times agreed price, followed by a bank transfer of the same amount.

Self-billing does not mean "create a fake invoice in the name of the supplier".
BUT I will read those sites and see whether the document that I have in my possession (entitled "shipping notification") might actually be enough to satisfy our tax authorities (never mind the VAT, I just want to claim the purchase as a valid business expense, and my accountant says "if the invoice doesn't contain what it needs to contain, then we cannot book it")
www.gov.uk/invoicing-and-taking-payment-from-customers/invoices-what-they-must-include   is the link he gave me as guidance...

Hello Everyone. Apologies for the delayed response. We just received an update from the team. An issue has been found with VAT invoices but the team is working on a fix. Until then, we are unable to provide such invoice.

While waiting, please make sure that a Support case has already been created for your request - this means that you have already contacted Support to request for the VAT invoice.

The Support case will be kept in open status. Agents will follow up with you once the issue is resolved.

To connect with them, visit https://gopro.com/help/ContactUs . Once there, select "Contact Us" and proceed with either chat or a callback request. Thanks!

Re: need VAT invoice for purchases

[ New ]

@mariustanya

thanks for the reply.

Please note that I don't care whether it's a VAT invoice or not - I just need AN INVOICE. Something that fulfils all criteria of the legal definition of an "invoice", instead of a "shipping notification" (which is what your own email calls it - it doesn't say "invoice" anywhere, and doesn't show who the vendor is - and that is the MAIN REQUIREMENT of any invoice).

So, once again, I have failed to raise any chat support OR a callback request, and I therefore ask YOU to raise such a support case on my behalf: order numbers are MP-04338754, MP-04350262, MP-0454169 and if the invoice is emailed to the email address associated with those orders, then there is no question about data security either, because no information will be sent to anybody who is not entitled to it or hasn't had it before.
PLEASE CONFIRM

I was about to order but can't without a VAT invoice. Can't do a DIY one as GoPro have to verify that they paid the VAT that they have charged us. If it hasn't been paid its VAT fraud at their end, if we claim it back without an invoice from them its fraud at ours. Unbelivable such a big company don't have an accountant who can put them right. Same problem here. Purchase done within EU (ordered in Poland, received from Netherlands).

I've just talked with the support team and the guy said I already received the bill when placing the order (which is not an invoice), and they cannot issue me the invoice. He said I should resolve the "problem of needing the invoice" with my local goverment Smiley LOL

GoPro seriously? Is it that hard to issue an invoice?

It is an EU law: https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/vat/eu-vat-rules-topic/vat-invoicing-rules_en

Once GoPro receives fine from EU they will fix that invoicing system.. :D

@sagi6I love your approach!

Never thought of that. Let's go right to the top. They've had plenty of opportunity to get their act together.
