Hi @max28371

We have received reports regarding GPS on Quik for desktop.
This has been reported to the team and they are working on it.
In the mean time, you may use the GoPro app or Quik for mobile to overlay telemetry.
Other users also suggest RaceRender or Dashware.

Thanks!

Ej

You can also use this member created online program to extract GPS and other metadata to be used in a variety of programs. https://tailorandwayne.com/gopro-telemetry-extractor/#

Remember that GPS likes many satellites locked, which can take some time stationary before movement begins.   So if you are cycling and decide to get a clip...turn the camera on and then instantly film...well that file will likely have more issues than others.  If you are filming from the inside of the car and attach the camera upside down from the ceiling...even more issues.   Best is to have a highish position and 360 sky access, especially the horizons and with a moment or three stationary to help get the best GPS lock for the times this really matters.

So far I've found that the 5 & 6 have the best data if you want to use it in the GoPro or other software.   In the image, white is for the 7 and red is for the Hero 8.

In this image I compared a 7 and an 8 from a 10 minute car clip.   In this case the 8 had a bad lock hence the track map was a mess.   And the 7 had some issues too, but overall did better.   The white trace (7) has a mostly accurate map.   Below in the image in the graph you can see that the GPS accuracy had frequent issues.  You'd want to see about 1-2 on the measurement and not infinity lol.   The driver waited a bit to help get a lock, but the weather and interior mount reduced available signal strength.

Rumors are that a new desktop app is coming (a new build, not an update to Quik) which is why updates to the current desktop app haven't come out.

The members of this group can help you with your current work flow and desktop editing with GPS data
https://community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro-Metadata-Visualization-GPS/gp-p/Hero5MetadataVisualisation

You can do incredible things with the desktop version of the member created GoPro Telemetry Extractor
https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/
There is also a free online Extractor, but the paid version is better, is easier to work with, and gives a lot more data.

With the extractor and Virb Edit, Adobe After Effects, Dashware, and these other programs https://community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro-Metadata-Visualization-GPS/GoPro-Telemetry-Resources-software/g... you can make incredible GPS/Metadata videos.

@kajuna (the maker of GoPro Telemetry Extractor) is also very active and helpful in assisting.

Thanks @danielr15

Additionally, I just created a tool for those that strictly want to edit on GoPro Quik and that need gauges.

Be aware that GoPro just released a v1.50 firmware update for the new cameras that makes the GPS data even more incompatible with GoPro Quik, my tool will only be effective if you do NOT update. I'm working on that but for now, it supports up to v1.20.

GPS turned on on camera but will not overlay on video. Tried on both desktop and phone app. all are up to date. While filming noticed GPS icon is grayed out on phone app. I have turned GPS off and back on on the app. still grayed out. Yet the camera says it’s on.
Used the extraction software and it shows the data is there. Brand new Camera very frustrating.

@indianpaul how does the camera say that the gps is on? Do you see the bright white pin when you slide down the top drawer?

You cam check if your video files contain gps data here: https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/free
