beep error codes

[ New ]

I find it truly puzzling there is no official list of error beeps anywhere on this site. Needless to say, there is not even mention of the issue in the GoPro 5 manual. I have placed two phone calls to customer service and chatted once, but all I keep getting is how to use voice commands. Those I know already. What I do NOT know is how is the camera is responding to my commands if is mounted on my head, and I have no way to looking at the camera when I have both my hands on my bike. What purpose does it serve to "talk" to the camera when I cannot understand what it is communicating back to me? It seems almost impossible to find out from GoPro what the solution is. So far, the camera gets 5 stars, and GoPro support gets 1 star

Re: beep error codes

Hello @martinphx.,

It is true. We do not have an article detailing the number of beeps as camera's response to voice commands. I agree with you, when it is not possible to see what the camera is doing, we would not have a way to tell if the camera is doing what we tell it to do via voice command. So I took out a HERO5 Black camera and listed the following beeps:

  • Turning camera on - 3 beeps
  • Taking a photo/ starting a recording/starting a time lapse - 1 beep
  • Shooting a burst - 1 beep followed by a long succession of beeps indicating burst
  • Stopping a recording - 1 beep, followed by 3 successive beeps
  • Stopping a time lapse - 1 beep, followed by 3 successive beeps
  • Changing modes - 1 beep
  • Turning camera off - 7 beeps

I hope this helps. You can verify on your end as well and see if we got the same beeps. I will get this to the team to see if we can have this as an support article. Hope to hear back from you.

Best regards,
Marius

Thank you Marius. I appreciate the feedback. I have contacted three different support specialists, but none would even answer my question. I believe is of fundamental importance to incorporate this information in your manuals and website, as well as train your support staff accordingly. I spent my precious time trying to obtain an answer, but all I got repeated was instructions on how to use voice commands.

I do not see, however, the error codes listed as I got one long beep after each time I said "Go Pro start recording".

Thank you again.

Martin

You are welcome, @martinphx. Thank you for the feedback. We will definitely work on getting this sorted out. Could the single beep I listed above (Taking a photo/ starting a recording/starting a time lapse - 1 beep) be the same long beep that you observed? (Perhaps beeeeep?) Or is it longer? Thanks!

Thank you Marius. This is the scenario: the camera would accept and perform my commands correctly for the first few videos/photos, meaning they were saved in the SD card. However, after that, every time I said a command it would respond with a much longer beep which back then I did not know what it meant. Since I did not know at all what different beeps meant, I kept on making videos and taking photos. Dozens, only to find out nothing was saved in the card. Later on, moved by frustration on my second day experimenting with the camera unsuccessfully, I went through this forum and realized someone had had the same problem, indicating it was an SD error issue. But again, no official info from GoPro. I have now purchased one of the recommended SD cards, yet I have not have the time to put the camera a third test.

Thank you for posting the codes online, Marius. What about a chart for error codes? After a few days using my GoPro successfully recording while it was mounted on my head, I got a succession of fast beeps, something of a "trill". That footage never recorded and I do not know why.

Thank you for the update, @martinphx. I have already forwarded the request to the Support team so an official article can be published. Have you been able to replicate the issue with the fast beeps? So far the fats beeps I noticed where from stopping a recording and time lapse, and turning the camera off.

Thanks Marius for the quick reply. Again, I have no idea because the camera was head-mounted. The camera was on, I had been using it without any issues for a while. That is when the fast beepss sounded (alarm?) I noticed it had turned itself off as it did not respond to any commands after that. I turned it back on manually, everything was normal. All videos and photos had been recorded properly before the incident. What could have caused it to turn itself off?

Do you recall how you manually turned the camera on? Did you use the Shutter (top) button, or the Mode (side) button? Using the top button means utilizing the QuikCapture so turning the camera on this way starts the recording right away, and saying Stop/Start recording will stop the recording and turn the camera off automatically. Could this have been the case? Thanks, @martinphx

I only use the side button to turn it on. I wish there was a feature that logged all internal errors during the camera's operation...

That would be a great feature to have. Thank you again for the additional information. I tried replicating the issue but to no avail. Other factors to check -  was camera in auto-off? was the battery still charged? This maybe far-fetched but was there any part of the mount holding the camera that may have pressed on the power button when you moved a certain way?

Hi Marius. One of points may very well answered my question. The camera was on auto-off after 15 minutes. Again, it would have been nice to know the equivalent in "beep language". So for future reference, a series of fast beeps is the camera turning itself off? BTW Nothing was touching the camera and the battery was fully charged. Thanks for all your input.
