Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

[ New ]

i think the GoPro product teams are not reading the forums at all.

We need to make it known to them using other means. I just sent an inquiry thru the feedback channel. Maybe if enough people make noise, it will happen soon.

For me, this issue just creates a feature i cannot use. Don't like it but what can we do (except this will be my last GoPro)?

Yep the last go pro for me.  I had a garmin Virb 30 that was great, and had the data overylays way way before Go pro made an attempt at it.  Im waiting for garmin to hopefully put out another camera.  I got the 360 camera from them and its been great.  All go pro will do is come on here and say to contact support and they will help you.. lol.  Good luck guys!  keep posting!

I am not much of a camera geek, but I thought that was a great feature.  I wanted to support GoPro too as it is an American company, but it is getting to the point that there is so much competition for Gropro, the company won’t be able to compete much longer Im afraid. Something like this it seems would be an easy fix?

It is! It drives me nuts. It's obvious that Go Pro does'nt even read their own forums. This should be the easiest thing in the world for them to fix. Definitely won't be buying any more Go Pro products if they can't even be bothered with the simplest of fixes. We could probably talk all the trash we wanted to about them here and they'd never know!

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

[ New ]

The answer is simple.

We identified the problem, and found the root cause for them (despite the multiple pieces of 'official' advice on this thread that firmware updates etc would be the fix).

In short, the problem lies with GoPro Quick, the software not with the device itself. GPS only sends UTC, the device records it, and it should be incredibly bloody easy for the software writers to add a field to allow the UTC time to be displayed in whatever timezone you wish. The fact that this issue started with Hero 5, and still exists show that the hardware products haven't changed, nor have the software writers done anything about GoPro Quik.

Here's the killer and the reason why nothing has happened yet. If you go to an alternate video software provider 'Dashware' there is a proud announcement on their page that "The Dashware team is now working for GoPro", which indicates that if you want to use the simplicity of GoPro Quik to add the Telemetry, forget about it. Looks like you will have to download Dashware and learn how to use it. Certainly not as simple as Quik, and no doubt be the end of Quik.

GoPro, do the right thing and admit that this problem will never be fixed in your software, and third party software is the only option.

I'm having the same issue and is really disappointing!! Should be an easy fix on the Quik app as the data from the GPS should be correct, however... several months to fix an small bug, what a lame customer support

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

The problem is not with Quik software, but with the way the videos are recorded. There's no info of any timezone, so when the videos are just copied to the PC, it just changes to your UTC zone. Just check for your copied videos, to see if the time there is also wrong.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

Why is there a setting for the date and time for the gopro then? The timestamps on the files are correct, their software though is buggy and I guess their developers don't know how to handle timezones. My $50 chinese cam from amazon can handle timestamps better! Anyways I think complaints here are useless I believe this forum isn't even monitored by gopro, this is just their lame excuse to say they have a community.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

[ New ]

The problem is the GPS telemetry that's stored inside of the files.  The time and date on the camera is whatever you choose to set it to, and the files it creates will have that time / date stamped on the files.  The real issue is that the GPS data is recorded in UTC (this is fine), but the Quik software needs to allow the user to translate the UTC time to whatever timezone they are in / or want to use.  It's really quite simple and 100% of this problem lies with the Quik software not taking this into account.

Again, the camera and it's hardware are 100% correct and function correctly and exactly as it should.  It's the software that's broken!  But GoPro doesn't care and clearly don't read the forums.  I and a number of people have raised it with support / feedback forms but zero has been done.  It's clear nothing will be done.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

[ New ]

I'm actually not using Quik.
I set my date correctly on my GoPro, and also syncronize it with my phone.
When checking the videos on the camera, they show the correct time and date. But when they are copied to my PC, they show a +1, because I live in a +1 time zone. The video files don't record any tag about the time zone, so it is assumed that the time is in UTC. So when copied to a computer, it just assumes is +0 and therefore applies the local region settings, +1h in my case. This happens with Quik but also when you just copy your files to your PC.
This has been discussed in several other threads. Quik software is just doing the exact same thing.
What I can't understand is how GoPro don't have any setting for the time zone, like absolutely every other camera. It's like they just forgot it, and don't care to fix this, which should be so easy to fix.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

Same problem here. Characteristically sloppy software engineering GoPro. How could the developers working on this not have foreseen this problem? Did they even test it before releasing it?

It has been 8 months since this thread started and this incredibly obvious bug has not been fixed. I'm going to take my business to Garmin.

If anyone from GoPro ever takes any interest in looking into this, maybe you could allow users to at least turn off the time display in Quik so that we don't have something that is obviously and completely wrong in all our videos.

The same problem in my Hero 7 black. It's very frustrating. GoPro does not take care of the small important details. If they do not change, I see them as a bad future.

Same here on my 6 Black + Quick.

It's amazing how they can't get the simple things right, but share prices and sales are dropping while they're acting amazed.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

Yeah - I have the Hero 7 black.. I setup the camera to the right time and date and sync with my macbook and all that good stuff. Yet when I use quik to create some edits.. the info cluster is still showing a super incorrect time stamp.
For example, a clip was taken at 2:45pm (my gopro has that info in the preferences so I know its got the right time setup) yet.. in quik it shows 9:45PM when I use the info cluster...
Would be really great if GoPro posted some info on how to get these fixed cause I really do like the info cluster.. but that time stamp is so off its insane to include in any videos.

Same exact issue here, GoPro HERO 7 Black. Recorded at 5:22 PM (date and time CORRECT on GoPro), GoPro Quik overlay shows 9:22 PM.......At $349-$399 a pop you can fix this!

Now with the daylight time change all my videos are +2 instead of +1. Great...
Still couldn't find a way to correct the metadata of the videos.

It's nice to know I'm not hte only one having this issue. I normally don't use 'Info Cluster," but if I did, the hours are way off. Camera time is correct, but for some reason using the Quik software, if gets messed up, so I'm going to say GoPro needs to fix the software on Quik.

My personal opinion: you are lying.

The team is not working on this because the problem has a simple solution that should be resolved with an update and for many months now this has not been fixed.
It is a shame for a camera with this price and an inexplicable loss of prestige for the GoPro brand

Smiley LOL i already upgraded my hero6 to the DJI Osmo Action and the GoPro team is STILL WORKING on the issue we encountered many moons ago. If this is the approach, god bless GOPRO. I'm gone for good.

It’s frustrating because this post was created in June of 2018, OVER A YEAR AGO, and GoPro’s response continues to be, A YEAR LATER, “We’re working on it...”

Remembering the camera's themselves are correctly recording UTC time from GPS and embedding that into the file. It's just the **bleep**ty Quik software that lets the whole process down.

Most likely the resolution will be that Quik will be mothballed and replaced with some other software that requires payment for any sort of functionality like this..

Crap behavior GoPro.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

This doesn't seem to be limited to GoPRo Quick and the wrong time stamp in its overlay. Tried the same thing in conjunction with the Garmin editing software (Virb) for my bike computer and syncing it with the GoPro footage. That's one of the main reasons I bough the camera. Time stamp is off there as well by 4 hours (UTC vs local Eastern Time zone). So it seems it's a data field in the camera that doesn't account for the time zone correctly or not at all. No way to change the time stamp in Garmin Virb either for the GoPRo video file.

Between that and the less than impressive battery live on the Hero7 Black (and I bought three batteries...) it's borderline useless.

No fix it seems. I returned the camera today. They'll send me a new one (this wasn't the only problem). Not hopeful that it'll make a difference but I agreed to try.

Hi all,

Just set your GoPro to UTC +0 time ...

Example: My location is UTC +7 at 7:00am, then set GoPro to 0:00am, this will work.

Hope this helps.

I'm not followinbg your suggestion. Can you eplain further? My Gopro does timestamp data wtih UTC+0(which it gets from GPS data) and then when the data is overlaid on the graphic still with UTC+0 ie when you have video in my locatiopn of UTC+9.5 it reports the time it is in England ie daylight rides with the time showing as midnight or thereabouts. I may have missed some subtelty in your suggestion.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

No, that doesn’t work. I have tried that of course. The problem is that the GoPro receives the time code from the satellite, knows your location, but is pulling from a wrong data field in the software somewhere. So your local time that you set on the device will get ignored no matter what.

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

Hello pilotryan here. I'm a Hero 6 Black owner here with same time offset problem Shows my GPS data in UTC. HOW HAS THIS NOT BEEN FIXED GOPRO?

For me it's not SO bad as im a pilot and work in UTC anyways but it's kinda silly that GoPro is so incompetant that they cant fix something that is literraly just a few lines of code. More importantly it worked correctly in prior versions so what broke it and when?

I need to vent abotu GoPro a little more before i finish though. For the most past my Hero 5 Black has been AMAZING! No issues . However, i bought a Hero6 at the saem time as the 5 and the 6 has been nothing short a pain in the balls.  My first Hero6 used to just FREEZE. Mid flight at first.. just random. Then it started happening just minutes after i started recording before i had even taxi'd to the runway to take off. By the time i had opened up a ticket it was slightly past the 1 yea mark but GoPro made an exeption and RMA'd my defective device.  Seemd to be great except for when using an extended battery. It seems like the Hero6 freezes up when the extended battery runs out. The Hero6 does not continue recording because it freezes up until manual intervation (usually pull battery whic his a pain in an extended battery config). Now my Hero 6's rear LCD screen stopped working after it got exposed to water WITH the hero6 configured in a sealed, watertight config. It's not so bad since my extneded battery covers the screen in the way it mounts anyways. But the goddamn camera is still freezing up whe the exteneded battery runs dead. Any thoughts on that would be greatly appreciated! thx

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

[ New ]

Apparently the problem is also the MP4 format, which metadata doesn´t save the local zone.
Usually other devices can correct that automatically, but GoPro is ´special´, so therefore we see the incorrect date.

What I do is correcting the date manually with exiftool.
Then, in cmd, I write the following commands:

exiftool -ModifyDate-=2:0:0 -CreateDate-=2:0:0 -MediaCreateDate-=2:0:0 -MediaModifyDate-=2:0:0 -TrackCreateDate-=2:0:0 -TrackModifyDate-=2:0:0 "C:\Users\GOPRO\*.MP4"

In my case the dates are -2. Replace it with the time you need.

Then I also apply:

exiftool "-filemodifydate<createdate" "-fileaccessdate<createdate" "-filecreatedate<createdate" "C:\Users\GOPRO\*.MP4"

and:

exiftool -FileModifyDate+=2:0:0 -FileCreateDate+=2:0:0 -FileAccessDate+=2:0:0 "C:\Users\GOPRO\*.MP4"

So all the dates are the same.

Please tell me if that works for you too.
Cheers!

Thanks for the exiftool and code to fix this. Any pointers on how to accomplish this on a Mac?

Re: Wrong timezone on GoPro hero 6 Overlay

Never used it on Mac, but I presume it would be very similar.

From the exiftool website:
The MacOS package installs the ExifTool command-line application and libraries in /usr/local/bin. After installing, type "exiftool" in a Terminal window to run exiftool and read the application documentation.

I guess the same code should work too.
