Sorry to know that.
May I know if you already tried resetting your camera or reinstalling your camera's firmware?
Here's the step on how to do it.

I will try updating the camera, but I need to get the videos off the USB first so will need to get a USB adapter to try and transfer the files onto my laptop, but it will be a week before I can get to town so will update when that happens.

Reinstalling the firmware should help. If you haven't done this yet, you can also just try resetting the camera. Remove the SD card and battery. Hold down the top shutter button and install just the battery. Keep holding down the top shutter and press the front Mode button. Release the top shutter only after the camera has fully booted up. Once done, release and then turn off the camera. It's usually a good idea to do this before and after installing the manual firmware update (although not mandatory).
Also, there could be an issue with your SD card. The card should be from this list. https://community.gopro.com/t5/en/SD-Cards-that-Work-with-GoPro-Cameras/ta-p/394308#Older_Cameras
NEVER USE SanDisk Ultra.
If it is, perform a full overwrite format using this tool https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/
Once done perform the firmware update.
