Why does my Hero 5 only record for 12 minutes at a time?

I have upgraded my SD Card to the fastest write speed available on the market and it still will only record 11:49 at a time.  Is there a solution?

well you reached the 4gb file size allowed by fat-32 and gopro locks it but allows you to continue on recording and that is a good thing. right.

So are you saying this is a normal thing?

Of the many years I own, quite normal.  they shortened down from 17  -to-9 minutes on hte models.      they call it chaptering.  bitrate (mbbs)  lower the bitrate, larger the size offile and time .. enjoy the camera.

@superstar0422

It will record for about 2-3 hours on a single charge, but the cameras software slices that video up into 3.7GB chunks GoPro calls chapters.  This chaptering is to avoid losing all your video data should a part of the SD card become corrupted.  Thanks to chaptering, you would only lose a chapter and not the entire video.  You can get longer chapters by adjusting your resolution and frame rate down.

Hope that answers your questons...
