Very disappointed with the GoPro 3.5mm mic adapter for the Hero5

After some extensive testing I can honestly say that the Hero5 and mic adapter combination are far from professional and way below what should be expectected from such equipment. The raw audio files are problematic on many levels, not least of all being a strange four channel variation of a WAV file, which is very difficult to read and play. The input sensitivity options are extremely poor and only consist of two settings. The powered and unpowered modes are very confusing as there is an issue powering electret mics, which I assume is the difference between the two modes. The difference between recording normal embedded AAC and external raw WAV seems very little in certain configurations.

if you are thinking about buying the mic adapter you may want to checkout the video first, as it may give you an idea about what you should expect. I would also appreciate it if someone from GoPro would take a look and maybe respond to the issues. I'm also on the latest firmware as of 14/04/17 Cheers,Dave.

GoPro Hero5 Black Microphone Test Sennheiser ME66 K6 Professional Shotgun 3.5MM External Mic Adapter In this video I'm extensively testing the GoPro Hero5 Black with GoPro's Pro 3.5mm Mic adapter. This adapter is the only available solution at the moment for connecting an external microphone to ...

Re: Very disappointed with the GoPro 3.5mm mic adapter for the Hero5

Off the bat, I didn't watch the whole 30 min video yet. Here's a few notes from your post and the first bit of the video.

Make sure the side door is on when using the internal mic. For whatever reason, the left mic is effected by the door being removed and causes the audio to be muffled.

If you are using the K6 power it doesn't seem like you would need the plus to add phantom power. I'm not too familiar with the feature or microphone though.

And last is that I'm not sure the Raw audio effects the external microphone. I think the processing refers to the internal mics as they require quite a gain boost. The 4 tracks on the wav file correspond to the left, right, and center mic signals. To be honest I'm not sure what the 4th one is. Maybe a mixed track.

Hi Cameron.

The internal mic wasn't the problem, in these tests it was only there as a yard stick for comparison. That said, I've not noticed any difference between the door being off or not, in both scenarios the sound is not good. Besides, if there is an issue with the door effecting the sound quality, this would suggest a design error.

You've misunderstood, I wasn't saying that the K6 needed to be supplied phantom. I was saying that the power mode in the GoPro settings seemed redundant as no variation was powering the various electret mics I attached, only dynamics, which should be expected regardless of the setting. My reference to phantom was in suggesting that bearing in mind the size of the mic adapter, GP could have made it more versatile and had it supply phantom.

Unless the Hero5 and adapter I used were both faulty, your understanding of raw is incorrect. The raw file is indeed for external mics, and does not work for the internals. I verified this in my tests, no internal signals in the raw files, only external signals. The external mic is the one that you hear in the clips that say eternal raw low. Do you use the mic interface and external mics? I only ask because if you do and your results are different than mine, it may suggest other issues.

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Fishy.

Being new to this particular forum, I'd assumed that like any good manufacturer, GP takes an active interest in their own forum and any issues posted.

I can see by your post count that you are very experienced with this forum. I take on board what you are saying, but will still hold out hope for some sort of GP response.

The video and summary that I've posted clearly show issues and I'd like to think that GP would be interested. At the very least, I hope this post and test are of some help to give other H5 users a heads up on the issues with the mic adapter.

Cheers,

Dave.

Re: Very disappointed with the GoPro 3.5mm mic adapter for the Hero5

I've just double checked and the internal audio doesn't get recorded as part of the raw audio file. Or, at least it doesn't on my setup. Maybe someone from GP could confirm this, or another user.

Cheers,

Dave.
