Totally frustrating memory card operation:after 10-20s: record freezing, zero files, stuck@"Saving"
[ New ]Hello, i am extremely frustrated with GoPro memory Card handling behaviour.
The problem what I experience: I record video (tested 30Mbps-FHD to 60Mbps-4K). After 10-20 seconds (=38M–150MB) the problem appears:
- everything seems at recording continuse, except time counter which stucks (at 10-28sec)
- THE Level of FREEZINGNESS depens on the extra time after time counter stucks (if recording stopped within 2 secs after stucks- light conseqeunces, if later, heavier consequences)
- Camera reacts slower to buttons (from ten seconds to NEVER)
- The "Saving" caption appears after 2- 30 seconds after stop button pressed
- Sometimes camera becomes stucks indefinitely until total discharge
- Recorded File:
- Sometimes records fine (length of the video = time counter when stuck)
- Sometimes File has size 0b to 4kB= corrupted
I suspect the GoPro has serious problems with memory card compatibility and handling when THE CARD IS NOT EMPTY. Even if the card is formatted in gopro, filled about 30%. files are moved (into different folder).
I tested 3 memory Cards:
1Samsung Pro 64GB UHS U-1 (seq :R:80 MB/s, write 60 MB/s)
2Transcend 633x UHS-U1 32GB (seq R: 70 MB/s, write 70 MB/s)
3 "Trashcan" Kingston TWO GB (R: 21 MB/s, W: 11 MB/s) - 15 years old, not even Class X rated.
Theoretically for max 60Mbps would 7.5 MBps be sufficient, but does not work in rality. The (3) Kingston crap is uncapable of recording 4K (60 Mbps = 7.5MBps), Any lower bitrate (45 Mbps-2.7/FHD+PT, 30-FHD, ) IS fine. (tested for 3 minutes)
The Flagship cards (1) (2) works OK right after formatted. But when not empty, (probably after some data written, I did not find out how many Gigabytes) there SOMETIMES kicks The frustrating problems described up (freezing, hanging, lags, trimmed files, zero files)
Even at lowest bitrate tested 30Mbps (i know there is also 20Mbps 960p30 for clarity) the card experiences that behaviour. Sometimes it is not even neccessary to manipulate files, it just is enough when the card is >75% filled.
When cards are filled (and causing problems in gopro), in computer still brings stellar write speeds (60 MB/s + = 500 Mbps).
What is the cause the cards become problematic when filled partially? Is the filesystems in some way "manipulated" when files are moved in PC to other folder in card or if new file is just written to card.
There may be other causes:
-bad connector (extra impedance on pins)
-bad- contacts on card
-faulty cards
-memory card power requirement so high
Has the GoPro camera unstable filesystem Driver? Has the gopro problem with power supply into UHS-1 cards (possibly running in more demanding mode (would explain, that the trashcan kingston crap records well, while UHS flagships fail at any res) ?
The strange thing is that 15 years old spectacularly slow Kingston 2GB crap card (88Mbps write speed) works well up to 45 Mbps . But the hi-tech Samsung/transcend new cards (600Mbps) experience problems under conditions (too much occupied space, files written outside GoPro)
This is extremely frustrating, it may cause total discharge (especially when quick On with shutter button, then immediately turn off and put to pocket), losing footage.

Hi @rikim4,
This might help.
https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considerations
Try using those recommended SD card instead since those brands mentioned on that link are tried and tested to work with GoPro Cameras.

Re: Totally frustrating memory card operation:after 10-20s: record freezing, zero files, stuck@"
[ New ]Wow that is pretty uncomfortable to worry about the particular model for particular camera to work together instead of relying on real-word benchmarks. So i probably test third memory card.
It is also strange that even the low-grade "Sandisk Extreme" cards are marked as compatible event if they are slower than my cards.
(Sandisk Extreme Pro are the top segment of Sandisk (80MBps+), "Extreme" Are sluggish (30MBps) ,Like Samsung EVO budget )
Has anybody similiar problem? (Having top spec card with 50MBps+ and having freezing/write issues)
Is there information that these cards would be incomatible and why?
Are the cards tested with the workflow above (filled to 30%, some files written from PC, files moved)?

[ New ]I heard a rumour that 64GB card bring more problems than smaller. Is it confirmed? Are 32GB card more compatible with gopro?
