After the excitement of opening the go pro 5 session and all the neccessary extras the dissapointment and frustration soon reached all new levels. My wife had saved for a long time to buy this Christmas gift only to watch my anxiety levels grow as it failed to connect to the iphone, then failed to respond to any other alternative app's then failed to record more than 12 seconds of footage without displaying the d err symbols and then it fails to format and then it fails to restart or respond to any functions including the unbelievably frustrating voice command that not only requires absolute silence and zero wind noise but appears to wait until it detects extreme frustration in your voice until it responds .......slowly. Overall this one device has been the sole source of more unrest over Christmas than all my kids and drunken relatives could ever dream of achieving. Even the cost and hassle of returning this item is going to be more than I can bear to think of. What surprises me is after I have spent hours trying to research any solutions to these design problems it transpires that everyone is having the same trouble and with previous models too. How can this product still be on sale?
I am not sure what alternative device I will choose but at the moment a brick seems more capable.

Happy holidays. When we calm down, my camera will be back in hand soon, so I do understand your frustration? Mine worked and then hosed up but I know it is not a plug-n-play here.
1 apps only One runs this camera called Capture, there are no other apps like Prizmia, this company made a App and never reallyf ollowed up after that, 10 is another App , but more or less that is it besides Periscope a social media app?
First things first charge the camera. While it is charging DL capture. Head over to support https://gopro.com/support/product-manuals-support get the manual. read over it some, and now you will be- wait yeah we all are Plug-n-play. thinking all we need to do is grab -n-Go. why we all have issues?
Well I am trying to help. and I hope that you had some time to take a deep breath and can offer us what you need help on.
1. charge camera
2. SDXC extreme plus card is needed for all 4K cameras no less. formatted in a puter
3, insert card, and press shutter. camera will walk you through steps, finish them
4 and start shooting. come back and transfer over.
that should be how simple of a new purchase. no reading, or taking forever tos et things up?

Thank you for the advice and the messages supporting my opinions. Unfortunately none of the suggestions have worked and in fact it just increases my frustration to know so many others have had the same experience. I don't think it is just me that feels this frustration. I am sure if you opened a tin of beans only to find out it contained tomatoes you would be upset, likewise I opened a box which contained an item with a specific set of descriptive capabilities - none of which it achieved. Any item should do exactly what it says on the tin!!! If it turns out that a different app is required for an iphone 6 it makes sense to let buyers know in advance, if there is a specific sequence of events that is required to make the device work or connect to an app - the manufacturer should make that information available before purchase, if a specific sd card is necessary than the manufacturer should make that available at point of purchase. I am by no means a techno dinosaur however the diagramatic set up and user instructions were far from adequate especially the lack of troubleshooting advice etc. I do not feel that anyone should rely upon the kind gestures of other users who have been victims of this misrepresentation where it is absolutely the responsibility of the manufacturer / retailer. This device is intended for outdoor use and extreme activities where I am sure the users rely on a dependable and predictable device, especially where a retake is not possible. I am sure when, and if, it works as described it is a good device but who needs to spend time dealing with manufacturers errors before first use? Disappointing first experience with Go Pro!!!! It will be returned with all accessories.

I am sure the return process will be less stressful.. Not my first but could be my last gopro as well. Not looking like said to be that gunea pig either. And well Do stop by and not just die off as a lost customer. and share your future purchase. and that experience. Good luck and been a pleasure

Phase 2 The saga continues.
Having purchased the Hero 5 Session from a reputable retailer the return was relatively simple but the usual 1 hour drive was extended due to the holiday traffic and the extortionate cost of parking added to the growing snowball of frustration.
Finding a replacement or alternative isn't easy - all other devices with great reviews are generally Chinese and only available on line although even the most expensive alternatives are 1 third the cost! Even trying out any go pro product is impossible as we could not find one retailer with a test product so getting the feel or trying any product is out of the question. (Imagine if apple had the same sales technique?)
After alot of shopping around and deliberation over the sycophantic equipment reviews I opted for the go pro 5 hero black! At £100 more extra I decided to forsake the expensive ancilliaries until I was sure it was ok.
From the start the device fired up instantly, the sd card was instantly recognised and recorded media, it also connected to my phone in a second and the ability to review media instantly on the rear touch screen was a great trade off for the minimal increase in size. Don't get me wrong it is definitely not plug and play and there are still some teething issues but I was prepared to give it a fair chance as the initial reaction was far less dissapointing comapred to the session.
The touch screen takes a bit of getting used to and the voice activation is again clearly prejudiced to my yorkshire accent and it is impossible not to start screaming "go pro take a f******ng photo!" so test this feature in a field! During the initial playing around in the house I forgot the old frustrations of the session and continued to photograph everything in site and even film myself working on my summer house ....so far so good!
Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day and living on the doorstep of a beautiful country park decided to test it "in the wild".....3 photos in, the "burst " feature took over the camera and I quickly generated 400 pictures of 5 subjects, the voice control nearly got me thrown out of a country park and then the symbol "media cannot be viewed" started the irritaion only to be quickly followed by the "SD ERR" and "No SD card detected" symbols.. FFS! Marital friction followed quickly and my wife could not cope with my chuntering and mumbling complaints even the dog left me alone to the frustration of being 5 miles into a forest and no way of fixing the problem.
After hours of computer time at home I have reformatted the card and it seems to work (in the house) so now a new dilemma has started. I want reliablity, I want it it to do EXACTLY what it says on the box especially for £350 and I dont want to me jerking around with it in the middle of a lake swim and now I am concerned that it will miss the once in a lifetime memory footage I bought it for !
I can see the other real life reviews and frustrations (There are two noticeble go pro reviewer groups - customer services when purchasing products are all good - customer services when dealing with an issue are very poor) Bearing in mind the small window in the returns timings - do I stick with it and hope it captures the clips I want it to or do I return it too and accept that Go Pro have great adverts and dissapointing products?

I am sorry for the bad experience you made. I posted a document in a facebook group, which might help you to get started - please see here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/1663755113887539/Hello%20new%20GoPro%20Hero5%20owners!/17968577772439...
The "SD Card Error" you get is related to a non-comatible SD in your camera. The SD's, which are proven to work are Samsung Pro Plus and Lexar 633x or higher. Get a new SD and your get rid of your problems.
In terms of voice commands, YES, you are spot on. Even I struggle to understand Yorkshire accent ;-)
Hope the information helps
