Sun Flare

How can I get rid of this ugly sun flare (round white objet) on my Hero 7 Black? Tried a hood lens and did not work. Granted the one I tried flared out a little so maybe need one that is more narrow. Please don't say it's normal. Normal as it may, it's annoying and looking for solutions.

Re: Sun Flare

I will not say that this is normal..... however if there was no flare across the lens from the sun, that would be abnormal....

There's 6 surefire ways you can stop these flare effects that are in now way abnormal whatsoever:

1:  Only shoot at night time.

2:  Only shoot on overcast days when there is no sun visible.

3:  Use a larger custom sun hood (which will then be visible in your footage and be more annoying than a flare artifact)

4:  Cycle so that your back is to the sun and then sun is not towards the camera.

5:  Film only during a solar eclipse

6:  Make the sun go away.

These flare effects will happen, it's a fact of life (no matter how annoying).  Honestly besides the above you may want to look at maybe using some gradient filters on your camera (which will help reduce the glare if not remove them completely).  I recommend gradient over ND as an ND will darken and soften the entire image whereas a gradient will ony darken the sky (where the sun is) and leave the rest of the frame properly exposed.

Re: Sun Flare

Thanks for the response and the funnies ;-)

I made my own make shift hood out of paper to test and was able to eliminate the sun flare. But because of the gimble within the camera when the camera is moved from side to side, I'm able to see the sides of the hood. So I'm going to look for a hood that has the sides cut off. Looks like I'm on the right track. The gradient lens you mentions may be another option that I may be willing to try. Thanks again!

Re: Sun Flare

What you could also try is going on a 3D printer forum and asking if anyone would be willing to print you custom plastic hood for your camera (offer to pay, but keep it under $20 including P&P).  It will work better than a paper hood that's for sure.

If you can't find a cheap gradient filter you can also look at making your own using some plastic film over the lens cover (something that's highly see through and easy to remove) and then just use a marker to color it in.  Sounds like it shouldn't work but it actually does.  It's not the best solution (a glass gradient filter being the best) but it's certainly the quickest and easiest to do.

Believe it or not, most people buy special lenses to exaggerate sun flare because it can be considered artistic (altough some people go overboard with it.... I'm looking at you J.J Abrams!!).  Then again, some people hate it.  Either way, just have fun trying to come up with a solution, and when you find one that works perfect, do NOT post it on here........... patent it!!!

Re: Sun Flare

Yeah, the paper make shift hood was just for testing. I'm sure it will flop all around when mounted on my bike. I did buy a 3D hood but the top of it flares out too much and still allows the sun to come through.

I wouldn't mind the sun flare as much if it was just for a few seconds or so but when riding my bike, I sometimes go for miles in a straight line and that sun flare becomes annoying and distracting. Ugly as F'ck. Well my search continues. Thanks for responding.

Re: Sun Flare

Well you got a  7 to 8 layer lens and   Hypersmooth that kicks ass on it  bounces around the actual footage  so if you  do not want the flare do not point to the Sun.or in that direction
