Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

On the GoPro Hero 6 the stabilisation would make the video quality lower, I undertsand it's a limitation with EIS.

However, on the Hero 7 Black, where the EIS is even more aggressive the video quality, even at 4k looks so washed out. The EIS really makes things far less sharp.

Obviously a fix is to not use EIS but that defeats the point of this camera.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

Bits per frame basically the same data rate:

  • HS Off .157
  • HS On .156

I did a test... after 12% crop and zoom to match HS On file my tripod test of a static scene resulted in pretty much similar quality (very, very minor better quality in the HS off file after scaling in post).

A moving gopro and/or slow shutter speed will further impact sharpness with hypersmooth and a thing to just accpet vs the better correction gain.

P.s. Make sure you compare using oriignal file soff SD card and not on your phoen which might be transcoding HEVC(H265) files before downloading them to your phone (mine did).

Hi @quickhero77554

What SD card are you using?

What is the version number of your camera? Preferences> About> Camera Info

Please try a manual software update. https://gopro.com/update/hero7-black

Once done, please do a test recording and see if this makes a difference.

Re: Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

Please do post a Before and after sample  so we can see  and also the time of day the settings so we all who  when get one or has one can replicate the issue and get yours resolved.

Re: Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

Hi @aragon1006

I am using a Sandisk Extreme PLUS V30 64gb card which I believe is a reocmmended card. I have also updated to firmware v1.51 manually.

Re: Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

@fishycomics

Hi Fishy,

This happens in very good light (midday) so I wouldn't want to attribute this to a low light problem where we all now stabilisation struggles.

As you can understand the loss of detail is minimal, and uploading won't help because of the compression through sites like youtube. I will try google drive which may help, but I think taking a video and zooming in on sections will be more benefical so i'll do this asap.

Please try this yourself. Record a video in 4k 60fps with and without hypersmooth, other settings don't matter. transfer to your phone and zoom in on something that can easily be distinguished in sharpness i.e. tree leaves. You will see that with hypersmooth active the tree leaves almost look like they have been recorded with a lower bit rate.

A question to GoPro would be, does Hypersmooth lower the bitrate of the video? much like how Protune increases it??

Thanks,

Explorer

Re: Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

What's the difference in file size with and without stabilization?
What is your ISO set at? Abe Kitslevitz suggest having a higher ISO when using Hypersmooth.

Re: Stabilisation seriously degrading video quality

@swifthero28110

Thanks for doing that comparison!

As I mentioned the quality loss I'm seeing at times is minimal but at other times can look quite washed out.

It seems to just be a limitation with Hypersmooth (and any EIS for that matter). So it's probably a case of weighing the pros against the cons. Clearly having Hypersmooth is a massive pro, so maybe it's worth just accepting that there will be some implications such as less sharpness.

I guess I'll use a gimbal where it's important to have that extra quality!
