some good news - i cound't format the sd card through the camera menus as that requiers the shutter button to work. But you can just connect the camera to a computer with USB and format the memory card from there. After doing that and doing the factory reset procedure a few times and leaving the camera overnight it started working. It would record and take phots for a few mins then the shutter would stop again. I think this means the button itself is not faulty. I have ordered a new sd card and will see how that goes.

I have finally fixed my non-working shutter problem!! I bought a T3 Torx screwdriver ($9 for a set of sizes T3 to T10). I popped the front silvery faceplate off to reveal 4 screws at the corners. There is one screw near the shutter button. I unscrewed this a quarter turn and the button started working. Its been working for hours now, including in the waterprrof case. I guess there was some misalignment between the outer button and the actual switch within. I am so happy not to have to replace the camera. I really hope this will help someone else. Best of luck. A non functioning camera is so annoying.

My select/activate button stopped working too during hiking last weekend. Took 3 pictures and no response after that. Tried restarting, removing batter and changed memory card, firmware is latest. The button just refuse to activate.
