Shooting t/lapse video on H5 & the battery died. I've checked the card but no footage - is it lost?

Hi, Hoping someone can help. I was shooting a time-lapse video on a Hero 5 Black. When I came to check the camera I saw the battery had died. I checked and there was no footage from the recording. I also checked the card on a laptop too and apart from the test shot I did when setting up, there's nothing.

So my question is... does the H5 not recognise a drop in battery to critical and save the footage before shutting down?

Hello @robwallerphoto

Sorry to hear about the missing footage. Which SD card are you using? Is it one of the recommended cards that we have on this list? Is your camera updated to the latest firmware?

I just tested with a HERO5 Black camera and the time lapse I was recording was saved when the battery ran out. During the last part of the recording, I got a low battery warning on the camera, ignored it and found the footage saved when I got the camera charged up.

Unfortunately, we do not have any preferred methods of data recovery as this may vary from SD card manufacturers of the preferred methods for recovering your data. However, you may be able to perform a Google search to find various data recovery options to recover the footage that had been lost. Yet, please do your research on whichever data recovery software is best for you as it may require activation of the software and there may be varying costs. Since this is certainly not normal for missing files to suddenly go missing, we recommend to reach out to the SD card manufacturer to further troubleshoot the SD card.

To avoid such from happening in the future, it is recommended that the camera is continuously charged - either by power banks or direct power outlet plug-in. Also, perform a manual update for your camera (if not done yet) and use a recommended SD card.

Thanks,
Marius
