Shooting high contrast scenes

Any suggestions for shooting circus/stage performances? My last shoot had well exposed background, including bright lights, but totally overexposed centre stage ie performers were washed out. Can provide file if required.

Re: Shooting high contrast scenes

If you don't mind color grading in post, EV -1 (-0.5 in lower light) and Color Flat will give you the most detail in highlights and shadow. You can also make adjustments by bringing down the MAX ISO. You want it as low as possible. Once you've got it to MIN/MAX ISO 100, see if you can adjust the shutter to lock down your settings. You'll need to make adjustments as light changes, but this method gives you the most control.

Keep in mind, Hypersmooth works best with a shutter 1/240 or faster (1/480, 1/960...).

For on the go quick adaption to changing light, using the selective light metering works best. To do this, press on the back LCD to select the area that you want the camera to meter light. You can select the center for spot metering or pick a spot for adjustments/locking. Personally, when I do this is usually so I can choose and then lock the metering. If you go this route, any changes you make to shutter speed/EV will be overridden.
