And before you ask... did I use a recommended card?...
SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter, Grey/Red, Standard Packaging (SDSQUNC-064G-GN6MA)
I do believe the latter is (a variants at least) is on the list.
The problem really started when the firmware upgraded to 2. I didn't have this issue prior - the camera got hot, but not that hot. In fact, I was able to use the 'ultra' (i.e. not on the list) card just fine.
I've also tried turning of WiFi. If this makes a difference, I can't tell. Since using the extreme card, I don't have the crashing/data loss behavior.
I realize that I'm using my camera in the most insane manner - to basically tape a 1.5 hr lecture in a classroom (at College of San Mateo). Then a ten minute break. And then another 1.5 hr lecture. (doors open and connected to power during this time...)
Love to know what can be done or if it just gets hot and that's that.

@jefff4040 - I saw you hadn't gotten a response and wanted to follow up. It's not unusual for a Session to get warm while in use. If you think it's getting too warm, please let one of our Customer Support team members know about it at https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus and they can trouble shoot the issues with you.
