Recover video from a .lrv file

Hey everyone!

I've been using a GoPro Hero 3+ for many years now, with a Samsung 64GB SD card. It's the first time now that I've lost a video. I looked at it, and the next day it was simply gone from the card. I've been reading a lot on the forum so I know that it's a problem more common than I thought. Is it possible to recover this video just from the .lrv file? It is the high resolution .mp4 file that has disappeared, while the.lrv and the .thm are still visible when I plug the camera in the computer.

Thanks for any help,

Eef

Re: Recover video from a .lrv file

"Losing video" from the Hero3+ is not common. If you are using Quik for desktop it's more likely that the file was transferred to your computer. There have been claims of losing files, but ultimately human error is the most likely cause. I've been using GoPro cameras since the Original Hero HD and have just about every model (HD, Hero2, Hero3 Black, Hero3+ Black, Hero4 Silver, Hero4 Session, Hero5 Session, Hero5 Black, Hero6 Black) and while I have had a couple times where I thought I lost a file, I was always able to either track it down of figure out how I deleted it.

You should not be using the camera's MicroSD to store photos/videos for any length of time. Rather, they should be transferred to either your computer, cloud service, or mobile device after your shoot and then the SD card cleared/formatted. Also, it's best to not delete files from the SD card with the camera either directly or with the app. You can, but it should be after you are done shooting and right before transferring the files to your computer. At a minimum format the SD card in the camera after transferring files. You should do a full format of the card in your computer every few months to ensure there are no bad sectors (it is possible that there is an error on your card and this is why you are not finding the mp4 file). Performing a full format periodically will have the camera scan the drive for errors and fix/mark the bad sectors.

Having said that, I'll address your main question regarding the lvr file. While you can use and convert the lvr to a playable format on your computer, it will always be a low video resolution. It cannot be converted to a higher resolution. It can be saved in a higher resolution format, but the quality will remain low.

Re: Recover video from a .lrv file

It's the first time it happened to me, though it does seem to happen to other people as well. The movies have not been transfered to a computer: I've been out on a 4 month expedition in the Himalayas. There has been no possibility to make a backup on either cloud, mobile or computer, at least not of the entire SD card. We watched it (without copying or transferring), went to bed, and the next morning the high resolution video was not on the card anymore. That was the day after we recorded it. Anyhow, I suppose there is a problem with it and I'll format it when I get home, after I've tried some rescue software to see if I can find it. Otherwise a low resolution video is much preferred to no video at all, so thanks!

Re: Recover video from a .lrv file

if you change the file extension name from .lrv to .mp4 it will play as a normal video, but obvously won't be a very good quality
