Hello all GoPro'ers,
I know that when you external charge using a powerbank or record audio with an external mic you use the same USB port. Is there an option out there to be able to charge from a powerbank and use an external mic on the Hero 7 Black?. I take long moto rides and would enjoy doing both but do not want to stop to swap out batteries.
I know I could record audio on my cell phone and merge it after a ride in post, but the convenience of having it in one run would be cool

One thing that has been identified though, you must use a high quality cable or the camera will shut off. Also, there seems to be debate on whether or not the battery should remain in the camera.
While the camera will stay considerably cooler without a battery and while externally receiving power, I've also seen videos that say that this can lead to damage to the camera. I've done both and haven't had an issue, but I don't want to give bad advice (especially if it could lead to damage to your camera).

So that USB port on the GoPro 3.5mm adaptor allows you to plug in a power bank? That seems to simple..HAHAHA

Check out the following transcript that I have had with GoPro. They do not recommend charging and using the camera, this includes via a powerbank.
Me (12/18/2018, 10:43:03 AM): Ok, lets try another question. Is there any issue with charging a GoPro and using it with the Smart Remote at the same time.
Francis Aries (12/18/2018, 10:44:32 AM): Let verify that one .
Francis Aries (12/18/2018, 10:44:41 AM): Let me verify that one .
Me (12/18/2018, 10:44:55 AM): BTW I should add that I was able to charge a Hero 5 and use the Smart Remote at the same time.
Me (12/18/2018, 10:45:24 AM): I then got a Hero 6 and started having problems.
Me (12/18/2018, 10:45:42 AM): I have now sold the Hero 5.
Me (12/18/2018, 10:45:56 AM): So I have a hero 6 and a hero 7 and two smart remotes
Francis Aries (12/18/2018, 10:47:13 AM): Actually it not advisable charging and using it at the same time.
Francis Aries (12/18/2018, 10:47:36 AM): There are instance that it will work but it can damage you camera.
Me (12/18/2018, 10:48:04 AM): That's not good, is hat common knowledge?
Me (12/18/2018, 10:48:25 AM): Sorry "Is that common knowledge"
Francis Aries (12/18/2018, 10:48:56 AM): Yes.
Me (12/18/2018, 10:49:47 AM): We have spent a lot of time on this chat and now you are saying it is not advisable to charge and use a Gopro at the same time!!!!!!
Francis Aries (12/18/2018, 10:50:17 AM): I'm sorry for that.

Hello @rapidstorm72. As long as you use an external power source that can provide the proper amount of power to the camera, there should not be any damage to the unit. GoPro cameras require USB chargers that output 5V and 1A-2A (depending on the model). There is more information here on recommended chargers.

Thank you for that, however, if you read the notes on the chargers, it says to power the camera off.
My issue is that I want to charge the camera from my motorbike and use the remote control at the same time. I think that is a reasonable thing to do. I was able to do this with a Hero 5 black, but both Hero 6 and 7 blacks will not work.
I have tried numerous cables including the GoPro cable and cannot successfully charge the camera and control it with the Remote. The remote loses connection. I have switched the camera to 2.4ghz and tried everything I can think off but to no avail.
I have contacted GoPro and they cannot help. I think they have removed their power pack from their website.
So, GoPro have launched their last two products without the ability to charge them and use them with their Smart Remotes and they have acknowledged that to me.
They also say this is common knowledge.

We just tested it. We had a HERO7 Black and a HERO6 Black connected to a Power Pack and they both worked worked with the Smart Remote. If you have not done it yet, try manually updating your camera firmware, reset the Smart remote and pair it to the cameras again. Let us know how it goes.

I tested out my Hero 7 today. I plugged it in to my Eloop 11000 5V 1A powerbank and used my Remo remote without any issues. I prefer the Remo remote Vs the Smart remote.
What I have not tried yet is plugging in the GoPro external Audio 3.5mm adaptor and then plugging in my powerbank to the USB port on the GoPro Audio adaptor. If that works then I am golden as then I can ride my moto and keep it charged while also using my external mic.
At the end of the day, us consumers are asking a lot from this little camera. We all want it to do everything.
